Pic Queyrel via the Col du Viallet

On this hike, nature is the artist, offering us geological formations carved into the sandstone, each one as astonishing as the next.
Not to mention Pic Queyrel with its extensive panorama from the horizontal ridge line that connects the two high points.
At the end of the hike, you can discover the remains of the Malcros Canal. A somewhat crazy project which, from 1881 to 1923, supplied water to the valleys from a... glacier.

Description of the walk

Park at the start of the ski slopes at the Chaillol 1600 resort.

(S/E) Leave the resort via the hiking trails, passing by and following the chairlift until you reach a fork.

(1) Turn completely left and continue climbing until you reach a flat area with a picnic area.

(2) Turn right onto a path that climbs parallel to the chairlift. The wide path quickly turns into a forest trail. You will reach a fork.

(3) Stay on theGR® 50, turning left towards Col du Viallet. You will come to another fork.

(4) Leave theGR® 50 by climbing to the right, still following the direction of Col du Viallet. From here, you begin to leave the forest behind on a pretty balcony trail, entering a curious world of sandstone towers. You will come to a fork.

(5) Leave the path that remains level on the right and continue straight ahead towards Col du Viallet.

(6) From the pass, heading due west, leave the marked trail for an easily visible path. Follow it, staying on the ridge, until you come to a rocky outcrop.

(7) The passage is clearly marked by a white arrow. It is quite narrow but safe (use your hands to help you along), then you will find yourself back on a ridge.
Note: a more exposed passage allows you to climb this barrier via a small ledge.
The last part is truly in a mineral world, so the path is less visible despite the white markings. The climb is more sustained until you reach Pic Queyrel.

(8) From the summit, enjoy the view as you walk along this horizontal ridge line between the two high points, then retrace your steps back to the passage.

(7) At the exit of the pass, stay at the bottom of the valley, continuing straight west towards the double arch. The bottom of the valley has large boulders on the ground and the path is not very visible: just stay in the valley, climbing up the left side. The double arch is behind you, but you have to go around this part.

(9) Retrace your steps, pass Col du Viallet again, then descend to a fork you passed on the way up, where the path remains level.

(5) Continue straight ahead on a small path that stays on a contour line. You will reach a promontory offering a beautiful view of another slope, including the Pic du Tourond.

(10) Retrace your steps to the previous fork.

(5) Continue downhill, turning left onto the path you took on the way up. You will come to the fork you passed on the way up with theGR®50andGR® de Pays Tour du Vieux Chaillol.

(4) Continue straight ahead along this pleasant balcony path. Pass above an area of sheep pastures and arrive at a fork at an elevation of 1,897 metres.

(11) Leave theGR®50and begin a steep descent to the left. Join a cross path.

(12) Turn left, heading due east towards the ski resort.

(13) At this fork, continue straight ahead to the remains of the old Malcros Canal.

(14) Turn left and follow the old canal to the Abeil distribution basin.

(15) Continue along the road to the centre of the resort (S/E).

A wonderful getaway in Champsaur with my two Border Collies amid the magnificent autumn colours. The weather was perfect. Shorts and a T-shirt to start off November.
The double arch isn't too hard to find. After going to take in the view from the promontory, we followed the route but at point 11, we continued straight on to take a walk in the Barbeyroux woods and returned to point 12 to extend the walk.
A total of 22km and 1190m elevation gain in 4.5 hours with breathtaking views 🐕🐕🚶
Thank you to the author for this circular loop, which had been on our list for far too long.

Couldn't make it to Pic Queyrel because of snow. Foggy that day too. Still magnificent though.

Beautiful panorama, especially between the Viallet Pass (or Vialet? as written on the sign) and the summit.
The actual summit is not to the north of the final ridge but to the south.
The white markings are still clearly visible and very helpful. The little double arch is very cute.

The high number of visitors was due to two groups, like summer camps, climbing up to the pass.
