Circular hike to Pic de Hourgade from Peyragudes

A magnificent, isolated peak approaching 3,000 m, offering a splendid panorama over the entire Luchon region. A long route with significant elevation gain, crossing torrents and passing high-altitude lakes. Requires excellent physical fitness.

Description of the walk

Drive through the Peyragudes ski resort to park in the large car park near the last buildings, at the foot of the chairlifts.

(S/E) Take the south-facing track that climbs into the resort.

(1) At the first junction, in front of a maintenance shed, turn left until you reach the departure station of the Cabanou chairlift. Then climb up the slope on the "La Grande Traversée" ski run, rejoin the run, then continue climbing, leaving a water reservoir on your right.

(2) Once past the reservoir, cut left to pass in front of the Les Cimes chairlift departure point and then the mountain restaurant. Continue climbing along a small south-facing path before crossing to the other side of the mountain.

(3) Ignore a path branching off to the left (not shown on the IGN map) and continue walking south-east along the grassy slope of the Ourtiga mountain towards a small pass: the Couret d’Esquierry. Do take care on this path, which crosses small landslides in places. You will begin to see the cirque and the Lacs de Nère on your right, dominated by the Pic de Hourgade.

(4) Once at the Couret d’Esquierry, cross the GR®10 and take the path opposite that climbs upwards, ignoring the one branching off to the left. Pass a small hut. The path first climbs south-west before turning due south, passing beneath a rocky outcrop where some sections may require the use of your hands. Continue until you reach the Lower Lake of Nère

(5) Walk along the right-hand side of the lake, then continue the ascent on the rocky path that skirts the upper lake, climbing to its left, first heading south, then south-west, in the shadow of the Pic de Nère. You will reach a tiny pool, often bordered by a snowfield.

(6) Continue the ascent until you reach the magnificent Lac de Nère Arrouge (not named on the IGN map), the highest point of the hike. The path skirts it to the right before climbing due west. Climb a cairn-marked couloir using your hands for support, then emerge onto the summit ridge, to the north of the peak. Follow the ridge to the left until you reach Pic de Hourgade.

(7) Admire the magnificent panorama over the Luchon area before carefully descending to the lower lake.

(5) Leave the path you took on the way up and take another path to the left which descends along the left bank of the Néré stream. Reach a marshy plateau before crossing the torrent to continue along its right bank, avoiding deep gorges. The path comes to a damp rocky outcrop which is tricky to negotiate.

(8) Use your hands to help you climb down this section, taking care. Continue along the path which joins the GR®10 and turn left.

(9) Leave the GR®10 and take the first path on the right, which, running parallel to the outbound path and below it, crosses the grassy slopes of the Ourtiga mountain until it brings you back to the heights of the ski resort.

(10) Follow the mountain bike track and rejoin the main track from the outward journey.

(1) Continue to the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Between 7 and 9 hours’ walk depending on fitness level and breaks taken. A demanding, long and fairly strenuous hike. It requires a very good level of fitness and should only be undertaken in summer ( wait until the end of June) to avoid snow. Bring plenty of water.

Some technical difficulties: the exposed approach to the summit ridge requires the use of your hands, and the tricky descent down an often wet rock ledge.
Do not attempt in uncertain weather: some sections can be slippery if the rock is wet. Know when to give up and turn back.

Superb hike.

We had some difficulty following the route at the start when leaving the resort, but we were completely in the clouds and couldn't see 50 metres ahead of us. Without that, we probably wouldn't have needed to search.
Once we were above the clouds (Lacs de Nères), it was much easier (and beautiful!!!).

Be careful at Lac de Nères, we also got lost there. We didn't stray far enough from the large lake and followed the wrong trail, which forced us to climb straight up a scree slope before realising our mistake.

The end of the climb was a little more technical, passing on the left side of the chimney and using our hands, but it was fairly easy for us.

I agree with the comment that the start from Germ is definitely better than the one from the station.

This hike is recommended for those who are physically fit. The scenery is incredible and the view from the peak is magnificent.

** Please note:
First part:
No chairlifts (removed). Head towards the side of the "hill" on a very narrow path (between 1.5 and 2.5 feet wide :-o And slightly downhill. Not far from 1.5 km
I feel a little apprehensive because the ravine is very close by (a short descent and right in front of us)!!! So I'm going very slowly. Very slowly... And it's long! Some sections are tricky!
On the way back, however, my apprehension disappears because I think it's uphill (not much: 80 m elevation gain).
Better not to have even a hint of vertigo, otherwise it's goodbye!

Last climb:
I can see the path to the pass before the Pic de Hourgade at 2,950 m. It looks fine, except that...
... at the end: a 50-metre chimney (before the pass)...
At first it's fine, but then it's just fine earth or fine gravel, so there's no grip.
I went to the right because the left side seemed very crumbly from the start and there weren't really any rocks to block my feet. And it's very slippery (maybe too much)!
I made it up with great difficulty, using my hands a lot, and it was touch and go... holding on to the right side on vertical slabs with just the tiniest handholds!

Once I reached the top of the pass... how was I going to get down? A fall was inevitable because there were no rocks to block my feet and even with the poles (as on the way up), it was scary!!!
With a 35-45% slope and no real footholds. I don't feel confident at all, even though I didn't have much time to look at the left side (on the way up), where I don't think it's much better...
Too many passages? Too much erosion? It doesn't look like it's on the GR... It's also getting damaged with this slope!
I highly doubt that the group of pensioners we came across earlier (on the descent before Hermitans Lake, without sleeping bags) came this way, given how dangerous it is on the descent (unless they had ropes). And it looks like there's another path on the other side.
Phew! We made it to the pass!

The full video hike will be available soon...
The goal is to get to the peak, but either I can't see the path (I don't think so) or you have to cross some sharp ridges. Uh... this is tough! After a 1,400-metre climb :-o (and 250 km in our legs)
So never mind, I'm not going :-( And I have to go down: how?? I really need to think about that! I can see a path below the pass, but after that, nothing really...
It's no worse than the chimney descent, which I don't want to try... I go around and make the route longer.
A tricky section where you can't afford to make a mistake, and it adds a bit to the distance as I go around.
Another tricky section, and then there's some rough terrain with rocks, even if it's not too difficult.
Phew!
Experience (to be objective): 8,500 km of hiking up to 2,000 m elevation gain/loss
Tip: stop at the last lake or before the chimney (you'll see the lake from above), especially if you're alone and/or tired, so you don't get stuck at the top.

On the way up, after a long climb with very little elevation gain, there is a 5-metre-long sloping slab at 2,110 metres, with only a narrow ledge for your feet, poor handholds and no way to secure this section. As I was alone, I almost gave up rather than take such an unnecessary risk of falling...
Finally, there was a rocky chimney that was not very pleasant to climb.
On the way back, we passed the Nère lakes along the western flank of the Pic de Nord Nère. There was another slab to cross, but with decent handholds, then before reaching the Couret d'Esquierry, we had to cross a steep, slippery scree slope where we needed walking sticks or ice axes to avoid sliding more than 100 metres down the rocks.
The arrival at the Esquierry couret will feel like liberation!
In short, a hike that I would not do again, or take groups on, and that I cannot recommend.

The hike began at the Peyragudes resort, with a walk of around three hours, including a break, before we reached Lake Nère. From there, we set off to climb the peak, which took less than two hours instead of the three hours we’d planned, keeping up a good pace to make the most of the physical challenge. For the return journey, walking back down from the lake, we had about three hours of walking left, including a break. We set off at 9.30 am and returned at 5.30 pm, taking numerous breaks, including about an hour before the ascent and an hour 5 km from the finish. I recommend setting off early, between 7am and 8am, and making sure you’re well-stocked with water, as even with a forecast of 21 degrees in the shade, the sun made the effort more intense. Although we were novices, we found the hike perfect, with magnificent scenery and a few technical sections. Make sure you’re in good shape, stay well-hydrated, and you’ll have a brilliant time.

In my opinion, it’s better to set off from the village of Germ (GR10)
Peyragudes isn’t great in summer and it’s quite difficult to find your way around the mountain bike trails and other routes; the elevation gain made on the way up from GERM is partly lost on the way back due to the lifts at the resort; from the lakes onwards it’s really beautiful and the final chimney is easy when there’s no snow.
