The Mouillac waterway

This circular walk offers a wide variety of landscapes, alternating between open fields, wooded slopes and cool valleys. The route passes through former agricultural areas, downy oak woods, dry stone walls and typical Quercy region dwellings.

Description of the walk

Park at Place Henri Filhol, between the church and the cemetery.

Circular path marked in yellow PR®1

(S/E) Take Impasse de l’Église and walk away from the church towards the town hall.

(1) Continue straight on along the road. After about 300 m, turn right onto a path lined with low walls towards the Fontaine du Mouillagol (wet sections, potentially flooded).

(2) At a crossroads, go straight on, due east. You will reach the Fontaine Mouillagol in a clearing.

(3) Then turn left onto a path that climbs steeply. At the top, you’ll come out onto a road; follow it to the left for about thirty metres.

(4) At the T-junction (crossroads), veer right and enter the hamlet of Cavaillé via Impasse des Marronniers. At the end of the tarmac road, follow a path to the right alongside a farm. Go uphill and ignore a turn-off on the right.

(5) Turn sharply left and head back down. At a junction, turn right onto a slightly uphill track suitable for vehicles.

(6) At a T-junction, take a dirt track to the left into the hamlet of Perrufe. After about 200 m, when the main track turns left, take the Lo Bèl Garric cul-de-sac to the right. Head due north.

(7) At a junction (ferry crossing), turn sharply left. At the junctions as you approach the houses (hamlet of Perrufe), keep to the right.

(8) Take a path on the right. Walk north-north-west and ignore a turn-off on the right (240m). Come out onto a small road and follow it to the right. Turn left onto the Route de la Veyrière and go straight on to the hamlet of Tarau.

(9) At the junction, turn left onto a small road for 450 m towards the hamlet of Le Pech. Ignore another road coming from the left (cross) and cross the hamlet of Le Pech via the Route des Puits.

(10) On leaving the hamlet, take a small path on the left (ruined house). You’ll come to a small road; follow it to the right for about 50 metres and take another road on the right at a sharp angle (covered wells). After about 75 metres, take a path between the houses on the left.

(11) At the T-junction (Fonmalnet communal open well), turn left onto a gently sloping path. Then take the second path on the left uphill and head towards the church.

(1) Follow the road to the right and you will soon come to the church car park on the right (S/E).

Notes

The circular route is maintained by the municipality of Mouillac and the Quercy Rouergue et Gorges de l'Aveyron community of municipalities.

It is necessary to stock up on supplies in Puylaroque or Caylus as this circular route runs alongside small hamlets and quiet paths with no villages nearby.

During the hunting season, from late August to late February, do not stray from the marked paths, which are all rural paths open to the public and listed in the PDIPR (public network of footpaths and trails) of Tarn-et-Garonne (the land on either side of the path is private property).

The commune of Mouillac, feeling very much part of the Causse region, now wishes to participate in the Causses du Quercy Regional Nature Park project. It is now bound by a 5-year agreement (2023-2027) as an associated commune, with full membership in 2027.

A very beautiful hike with interesting sights, wells, old houses, beautiful paths lined with dry stone walls... easy with very little elevation gain. In short, I highly recommend it!
