Short circular loop around the Combe Obscure

The Combe Obscure is one of the westernmost valleys of Mont Ventoux: a charming, winding, stony path takes you into the folds of the Giant of Provence before climbing and returning to the start via a path along the cliffs of La Madeleine.

Description of the walk

From Bédoin, on the D19 towards Malaucène, the route starts from the hamlet known as “La Madeleine”. Parking is available at the roadside on the right-of-way of the farm tracks.

(S/E) The route begins by following the clearly marked track heading north-north-west.

(1) Make a note of the return route and head straight on to cross the Pâtis meadows.

(2) After about 350 m, you’ll reach the entrance to the Combe Obscure; ignore the signposted path branching off to the right and head into the valley. From there, the stony, winding path climbs between the limestone meanders and the climbers’ cliffs, passing through pine and boxwood woodland until it reaches the crossroads at the Combe de l’Aze (alt. 590 m).

(3) Turn left onto a forest track which climbs to the ridge at an altitude of 648 metres. Turn left again (GR® de Pays Tour des Dentelles de Montmirail) for about 500 metres heading south-south-west, then join the path on the left (GR®911).

(4) Running almost parallel tothe GR®, you can take a ridge path on the left which overlooks the Combe Obscure. The advantage of this is that you leave the Combe de Milan to your right and stay directly below the Madeleine crags. The path, which often runs along the edge of the cliffs, is clearly marked and widely used by walkers and trail runners.

(5) However, do not go too far; instead, turn left towards the Combe Obscure via a poorly marked path towards the 529-metre mark. The path zigzags through the woods before reaching the Pâtis. Pass the abandoned building on your left and continue straight on.

(1) Turn right to easily return to the starting point (S/E).

A lovely, easy hike with no particular difficulties. The section along the ridges is very pretty. Took 1 hour and 40 minutes at a leisurely pace. Used the app once to check my location at a fork in the path. Took a path on the left at the end of the descent to go straight to the car park. There was a tree across the path, but it was easy to get around or climb over.

First of all, it's a very beautiful hike with lovely views and plenty of shade, especially on the way up.
As mentioned in other reviews, it's very difficult to follow the route, but with the Visorando app, you can get there.
However, I think it would be better to rate it at least as MEDIUM, as some sections of the descent were very steep and we had to sit down to get down them. In my opinion, the EASY level should not involve scrambling!
Thank you for this lovely place!

The directions are terrible. It’s impossible to follow the route without getting lost, unless you use other tools.

A brilliant little walk! I agree with the previous comment: the first section is very well signposted, but we got lost between points 4 and 5. You really must stay on the ridge and not take the path that veers off to the right. The ridge is wide enough that you don’t feel in any danger, and the view is superb. We did this walk with our two daughters, aged 4 (half the way on Dad’s shoulders) and 9. Hiking boots are essential for the second part!

I did this walk starting from the car park on the D974. It’s a lovely walk, but for safety reasons I’d recommend doing it in the opposite direction to that indicated.
Please be aware that there is a section without a marked path, which is difficult to find and passes through private property (you’ll need to climb over an electric fence).
