Circular loop from Aizac to Rouyon

From chestnut trees to the moorland that precedes the Ardèche plateau, along beautiful paths with wide views, this is a relatively short but varied circular route with a slight elevation gain and a somewhat challenging start to the descent.

Description of the walk

Park in the Col d'Aizac car park.

(S/E) Take the road to the church (at the pass, the northernmost of the five junctions). Follow it uphill for about 200 metres. Take the first path on the left and then, almost immediately, turn right uphill onto the path above the road. Follow it to the hamlet of Le Roux, where you will rejoin the tarmac road near an imposing building.

(1) Cross the street; the path continues uphill opposite. After two wide hairpin bends and a wider, gentler climb, pass a barn on your right and climb a little more steeply to a first beautiful viewpoint to the east (altitude 804). Continue on the left along the gently sloping path to a three-way junction.

(2) Leave the track that descends towards L'Hugenot and continue uphill to the left. You will arrive at a pass (Les Coulets, elevation 875). On the left, the pass is a car park during the hunting season. On the right, a path leads to a barn. Follow the middle path that runs alongside a collapsed fence in the broom. Climb up to the hiking mast (elevation 956) surrounded by a few pine trees.

(3) Take the path furthest to the left, which descends steeply. Follow this steep slope, a slightly level section, and another steep descent to arrive at the ruins of Mal Combe and the Ruisseau de Chastagner ravine. Cross this stream, emerge onto an open space and, after another level section, you will reach the hamlet of Chastagnier Farde and the road after a final descent.

(4) Follow the road to the left to Chastagner Gourd. Cross the hamlet, then the bridge over the Chastagner stream (already encountered above). Continue for about 50 metres after the bridge.

(5) Turn left uphill onto the Ayres path. After the level crossing, you will come to a wide, recently built access road. Leave it on the left to join the path above a meadow. Continue downhill to reach an intersection.

(6) Take a sharp right turn, then after about 50 metres, take the steep descent on the left. The somewhat old staircase is in poor condition. Return to the outward route and follow it in the opposite direction to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Good footwear is essential. Take care not to slip on steep sections, especially when descending.

Yellow-white markings are usually well marked.

Worth a visit

This hike is best done in autumn, when the leaves are changing colour (the yellow of the chestnut trees, the red of the cherry trees near L'Huguenot), avoiding hunting days (check with hunters in case of a hunt).

At Le Roux, there is a magnificent building (the "Château") which unfortunately still seems to be awaiting renovation (autumn 2019).

The11th-century Romanesque church is close to the car park by the road.

It is possible to extend this hike by climbing to the summit of Rouyon from the (3) (climb up the path on the far right, then descend via the path that arrives in the middle). For an even longer hike (including the description of this climb to the summit of Rouyon), see "Between Volane and Besorgues, Aizac - Rouyon" on this website.

An easy walk to follow with the route description. This walk offers a good physical challenge, though the scenery is somewhat less impressive, apart from the distant view of the surrounding Ardèche mountains.

A very beautiful hike with magnificent views of the Ardèche mountains, but a somewhat physically demanding route with elevation changes and rocky sections. I recommend this hike, but make sure you have the right equipment.

A very beautiful hike through chestnut groves and forest, with some sections offering stunning panoramic views.
Some parts are less easily accessible because the vegetation has grown back (brambles and ferns).
The trail is also marked with signs, which are fairly easy to spot.
Some sections are muddy, but most of the time you stay dry.

We didn't do this hike; we did the one to Crau la Bégude Castle.

Positive points:
- Beautiful panoramic views on the climb after the hamlet of Les Roux: Mont Ventoux, L'Escrinet, the Ardèche mountains, etc.
- Very pleasant hike in summer, as it is mostly shaded by chestnut trees
- Pretty hamlets to explore, particularly the church in Ailhon

Negative points (there are some):
- The descent is a bit technical, steep and rocky, especially in the first part
- No panoramic views on the descent (but it would be difficult to admire them as you spend your time watching where you put your feet)
- Note: after heavy rain, part of the path after Les Roux is muddy; some sections are even transformed into streams

A magical stroll. Magnificent paved slanting streets and chestnuts galore. Autumn weather is perfect for this getaway.
