The tour of the Basse Volane in the Cévennes of the Ardèche

The Volane rises on the edge of the Ardèche plateau, at an altitude of 1,400 m, near Lachamp-Raphaël (the highest village in the Ardèche).
In its upper reaches, it is a mountain torrent, rushing southwards down steep slopes.
At Antraigues-sur-Volane, the gradient eases and the more docile torrent becomes a river, eventually joining the waters of the Ardèche.
This hike will take you on a journey through this section of the Volane and the surrounding ridges around Antraigues.

Description of the walk

Head to the Col d'Aizac, west of Antraigues-sur-Volane. Public car park on the square.

(S/E) From the Col d'Aizac, take the small road heading south. 200 m further on, turn left onto the forest track climbing through the chestnut trees and follow it for several kilometres... all in the shade.
Stay on the main track, passing the “Fontalazon” signpost

(1) Leave the track that descends to the left and continue along the main track, following the contour line. After a few hairpin bends downhill, at a bend, take the path that climbs to the left through the chestnut trees (marker on a tree). Then head back down to Chadenet.

(2) On leaving the hamlet, near a chicken coop, follow the path that branches off to the left; it overlooks a small road which you will reach further on. Once on the tarmac, continue south. At the Croix du Coulet crossroads, go straight on towards the hamlet of Thieure.

(3) This hamlet is situated on a rocky outcrop, overlooking the Aubenas plain to the south, the Volane valley to the east, and the Besorgues valley to the west.
Head down to the left, heading due east, until you reach the D578. Take this road to the right as far as the Pont du Bridou.

(4) Cross the Volane via the bridge. As soon as you’ve crossed the bridge, head up the path on the left. A steady, winding climb leads to the hamlet of Montagnac. Turn right onto the small road leading to the Col de Montagnac.

(5) At the pass, you are straddling the Volane Valley to the west and the Sandron Valley to the east. Turn left onto the small path heading north. 100 m further on, at a signpost, continue straight ahead along this well-marked yellow and white path.

(6) Cross the track leading to Mas des Combes and continue straight ahead. You will reach the hamlet of Font Bonne. There is a remarkable fountain just before the first houses. Cross the hamlet via the tarmac road and join the GRP® de la Haute Cévenne d'Ardèche here, marked in red and yellow; follow it all the way to the end, to Aizac.

(7) At the last house, turn left onto the path climbing through the chestnut groves. Well-marked and signposted, the slope levels off and then follows the contour line. Reach the hamlet of La Coste and a small tarmac road.

(8) Lovely view to the south over the Volane valley and the hilltop hamlets. Take this gently sloping road. At the first junction, continue to the right and, at the second, turn left for 50 m.

(9) Follow the path as it descends steeply to the left. It runs alongside a few houses before heading north-west. Take care on the occasionally slippery sections of this steeply sloping stretch.
As you descend, enjoy breathtaking views of Antraigues to the north-west and the Volcan d’Aizac to the west.
At the small road, turn right to reach the Pont de Gamond bridge over the Bise.

(10) Cross this bridge at the foot of Antraigues-sur-Volane, and climb the winding paved slanting street opposite towards the village of Jean Ferrat. At the first houses, turn left to reach the village square. From the square, take the only road out, passing the bakery. Then turn left onto the road leading down towards the Volane, passing the post office, the school and then the cemetery. Continue for about 1 km to the Pont de l’Huile.

(11) At the junction with the D578, cross the Volane and, immediately after the bridge, turn left onto the GRP® (red and yellow markings) which climbs up to Aizac.
Once you reach the small road, turn left for about 40 metres, then take a path on the right that passes close to the hamlet of Les Blanchons.

(12) Turn left and head up the valley to come out onto a road.

(13) Follow it to the left until you reach the village and the sign for “Col d’Aizac 642 m” (S/E).

A lovely walk, thank you. Just one small point: in Chadenet there’s a chicken coop as well as some sheep, and you have to cross their paddock. Hikers with dogs should be careful, as this could cause problems.
