Natural heritage, historical heritage and mining history of Wittelsheim

The route allows you to discover part of the town of Wittelsheim, its historical and natural heritage, and above all its mining past, thanks to the Potash Mine Memory Circuit. The route partly follows the Wittelsheim Discovery Route and the new Anneau Bleu route, marked by the Club Vosgien.

Description of the walk

From the SNCF train station, the Potash Mine Memory Route starts at the Joseph Else mine pithead, crosses the Landes du Rothmoos, goes up the Dynamitière path along Cité Amélie Deux, crosses the Langhurst industrial zone and Cité Grassegert, passes by the Château d'Eau and the magnificent Parc des Jardins du Monde, reaches Cité Graffenwald and follows Alsace's first railway line along Rue Pasteur to return to the Joseph Else colliery.

Two sections of the route are marked with a blue disc: from the station car park (S) to point (5) and from point (9) to the station car park (E).

(S/E) From the station car park, head towards the Mining Museum and join Avenue Joseph Else. Follow it to the entrance of the Kalivie Museum (marked with a blue disc).

(1) Cross the courtyard of the Kalivie Museum, turn left (Rue de Grande Bretagne) and then, at the cross street, turn right (Rue d'Espagne) and continue to the end.

(2) Continue straight ahead on the path along the slag heap of the Joseph Else Mine (marked with blue discs). After a left-hand bend, you will come to a fork.

(3) Turn right and, on the right, make a circular loop through the Marais and Landes du Rothmoos then return to Chemin de la Dynamitière, which you left earlier (marked with a blue disc).

(4) Turn right, heading north for over a kilometre, then continue along Rue de Munster to No. 2, about 50 metres before the large crossroads with Route de Mulhouse.

(5) Turn left onto the path to reach Rue de Mulhouse and follow it for about 200 metres. Turn left onto Route du Wahlweg and reach Rue de l'Industrie on the right.

(6) Take this road and, at the end, turn left opposite No. 14 (Rue du Langhurst), then right onto Rue Charles Péguy to reach Collège Péguy.

(7) Just after the school car park, leave the road and follow the path on the right that runs alongside the school, continue along Rue Copernic and follow this street. Cross the Rue Victor Hugo/Rue des Vosges crossroads with caution and continue to the next crossroads. Turn left and follow Rue du Château d'Eau to Rue de Reiningue.

(8) Cross Rue de Reiningue with caution and head towards the water tower. Cross the car park to enter the beautiful "Jardins du Monde" park (opening hours regulated).

Alternative route if the park is closed: see Practical Information.

(9) After visiting the "Jardins du Monde" park, exit via Rue de la Cigogne, then turn left twice and cross the Stade des Cigognes. Follow the blue disc markings again.

(10) Continue along the path through the Haertle Forest. At the next fork, keep right and continue to the old Roman road.

(11) Cross the Roman road, continue straight ahead, and follow the blue disc markings at the various forks. When you reach a small road, turn right and then left and continue straight ahead until you reach Place Blaise Pascal and Cité Graffenwald.

(12) Continue straight ahead on Rue Branly (blue disc markings), ignore a street on the left and, at the four-way intersection, turn right onto Rue Palissy and follow it to the end near the school complex.

(13) Turn left, follow Rue Pasteur (blue disc sign), walk along the first railway line in Alsace, located in the forest on your right, and reach the SNCF station car park (S/E).

Notes

Best time of year for this hike: all year round

My equipment for this hike: mobile phone with GPS enabled, Visorando app for reading GPX tracks and recording the route.
If the park is closed: at point (8), turn right, follow Rue de Reiningue for 100 m, then turn left into Rue de la Cigogne alongside the park and follow this street to point ( 9).

Thanks to the Club Vosgien for marking and maintaining the trails.
