Description of the walk

Road route:
Follow the D2205 road (Tinée Valley) to the hamlet of Le Bourguet. About 800m further on, turn right onto the road to Douans and continue to the hamlet (about 2.5km). Angled parking.
Caution: narrow mountain road.

Walking route:

(S/E) From the car park (marker 98), take the road north to marker 94.

(1) The path starts on the right between two houses and climbs steadily north-north-east across the mountain pastures, crossing the end of a track at an altitude of 1,450m.

(2) Continue climbing in the same direction, staying on the fairly well-graveled path and ignoring the few more or less well-marked tracks to the right or left. The gravel path continues up to an altitude of 1,600m.

(3) Please note: at around 1,700m, a yellow L-shaped marker (misaligned by half a turn) appears to indicate that the route heads left: this is not the case, so continue along the path to the right (north-east). The path gradually turns eastwards to reach marker 125.

(4) Continue eastwards and cross the Vallon de Douans (footbridge). Climb up a series of tight hairpin bends then continue east-southeast. The route maintains this east-southeast direction. You can then make out the passage over a small pass just before reaching marker 127.

(5) Continue south-east and go round a small lake on the left. Cross a first east-west ridge. Continue eastwards and, further on, a second north-south ridge. Continue climbing the slope, first north-east then east. Reach a hilltop overlooking the Lacs de Colle Longue.

(6) Descend, keeping to the left, to reach the Pas de Colle Longue.

(7) The return follows the same route to marker 98 (S/E).

Notes

Water refill point at the Douans valley, but be aware that this is a grazing area in summer. Note that 5 to 10 metres after the footbridge, there is a water flow from a grey PVC pipe (captured spring?? mentioned on the map).

A walk that presents no particular difficulties apart from its length and the elevation gain.
Superb views of both Le Mounier and the resort of Auron, as well as further up on the Italian side.
I returned to enjoy better weather.
Few animals to be seen, apart from a strange creature spotted through binoculars, which might have been a wolf watching over a flock of sheep.

A lovely hike cut short by the weather – cold, wind, rain and fog. Bad luck – the bad weather arrived early... but the mountain will still be there next time.
Start the hike early so that the first (and hardest) section can be done in the cool of the morning.
Don’t forget a hat and sun cream – there’s no shade for most of the route.
Markings in yellow or plenty of good cairns.

Hello,
I went on this brilliant hike yesterday...
Just a quick note: we found it a bit longer than advertised. My GPS (a fairly reliable Suunto watch) recorded 18.5 km...
So, 15 or 18 km??? This might be important for future hikers. No problem for us!
Thanks again for all your hard work!
Kind regards,
Jacques
