Description of the walk

Park in the church square in Dampierre-sur-Linotte.

(S/E) Leave the square and walk between the church and the school. After crossing the main road, continue on to reach the Fontaine Saint-Maimbœuf and the bridge on the old Vesoul road. Stay on this road and cross the Combe de Tevey.

(1) At the fork, turn right then left to reach the entrance to the Grand Bois de Dampierre.

(2) From here, take the farm tracks, single tracks and paths through sinkholes. Join the Combe Métot track at a turning area.

(3) Head diagonally left then right atthe first junction. Then turn right at the next junction to reach the ‘three fir trees’ junction, where you turn left. Almost at the bottom of the descent, take the single track that follows the edge of the woodland, before climbing the embankment to reach the village chalet and its picnic area.

(4) Quickly leave the main path to follow the single track that heads left, and which, after a steep climb, runs alongside a sinkhole.

(5) Then rejoin the main path, turn left onto it to reach the Route Forestière du Grand Bois. Continue straight ahead until you reach a right-angled junction.

(6) Turn left and continue straight on until you reach a hairpin bend.

(7) Take care here: veer left to tackle a steep climb to reach the sinkholes.

(8) Cross them and continue straight ahead, then turn right at the next junction to return to the Route Forestière in the Combe de Bas Pirroux.

(9) Cross this road and continue straight ahead, passing another road to reach the Combe Henriette, at the junction with the Chemin des Parties.

(10) Follow it to the left to reach the junction with the tarmac road to Vy-lès-Filain, above Dampierre.

(11) Take it to the left for a few metres, then leave it by taking the path on the right. Begin the descent towards Dampierre. Take the road to the left, walk past the cemetery, then head towards the Quatre Gouliches wash house.

(12) Then turn left and cross the Vicarage garden to reach the church square (S/E).

Worth a visit

The village has several shops (brewery, grocery store, bakery, butcher and delicatessen), in short, everything you need for a bite to eat, and for those worried about getting injured, there is even a chemist’s.

A lovely trail run through the Dampierre woods, winding its way through the sinkholes. It’s a quiet, peaceful spot where you can spot some lovely wildlife (mainly deer).
There are no major difficulties on this route.
The signposting is very easy to follow.

Thanks for the clearly visible markings, which make it easy to find your way when the foresters haven’t finished their work yet – which is to be expected at this time of year. A few nice climbs. Definitely worth doing again when the vegetation’s in full growth!

Thanks for this route – it’s lovely, with some really challenging sections through the sinkholes (steep climbs, sloping paths). The section around Dampierre is on roads or wide paths, but the rest consists of wild trails through the forest. The ‘trail’ markings are excellent. I’ll be back in the spring when the vegetation has grown back. Note that near Combe au Roi, some trees have been felled and, as usual, the logs have been taken away whilst the foresters have left the stumps in the middle of the path... a real mess. Another highlight: the presence of very polite hunters who offered good advice.
