Ridge walk above Grand Carroz

Le Grand Carroz is at the centre of an area surrounded by a line of ridges, offering unobstructed and varied views. The proposed route climbs to the Col de la Drière, crosses Mont Pellaz or Lentille and the Col des Fontanettes, then climbs the Montfred ridge off-trail before returning via a forest path to the starting point. Caution: the ridge route is not technically difficult but runs alongside steep cliffs on the right-hand side.

Description of the walk

Departure from Grand Carroz, a hamlet in Entremont-le-Vieux at the end of a road leading north from the CD 912 (Route du Col du Granier), 600m upstream from the main town (Épernay).
Park at the wash house on the left less than 100m before the hamlet.

(S/E) Walk up the last few metres of the road to the centre of the hamlet and turn right onto theGR® marked trail which descends to Cozon.

Climb back up opposite, still on the marked path, pass Loutraz and reach a crossroads at a right-hand bend after a ruin (1190m).

(1) Leave the marked path and head north on a trail that descends slightly to cross a stream, then gradually climbs through the forest before crossing to the left of steeper slopes leading to the Col de la Drière, where it joins the trail descending from Pointe de la Gorgeat.

(2) Take the ridge path on the left, which passes the geographical pass of La Drière (or Midi) and climbs the ridge leading to Mont Pellaz (or Pellat or Lentille).

(3) Continue along the ridge path which descends to the Col des Fontanettes (or Passage de la Cochette).

(4) From the pass, ignore the marked trails to the right and left and continue straight ahead on a faint but easy-to-follow path that climbs steadily up the Montfred ridge. When the ridge you are climbing flattens out into forest, turn right to join a parallel ridge that leads to the highest point of Montfred.

(5) Continue along the ridge, which is sometimes cleared by the path that continues, passing the 1401m point (slight climb). When the descent becomes steeper, veer left to maintain moderate slopes in the forest and descend until you cross a wide forest road coming from Les Marots.

(6) Take this track to the left: it heads north, remaining more or less level. After two hairpin bends, it reaches the top of a meadow at the foot of La Lance.

(7) From this sort of small pass, follow the track north for 50 metres, then leave it on the left onto a path that descends into a thalweg and joins a forest track coming from the right. Take this track to the left to descend gently towards the meadows, which you follow on the right.

At the entrance to the forest, the path slopes again to intersect the marked path coming from the Col des Fontanettes.

(8) Take the marked path opposite, which leads to Grand Carroz and from there to the car park. (S/E).

Notes

Water is available at the starting point (wash house) and in the centre of the hamlet (fountain).

No technical difficulties, simply:
- the crossing of Montfred between (4) and (6) is off-trail, which requires good orientation, but progress along the edge of the forest remains easy;
- the route between (2) and after (5) is on the ridge: the trail or path is on the south-east side because the north-west side is steep, made up of crumbling cliffs where falling is prohibited: caution is required throughout this passage, especially if the ground is wet!

There are several possible variations:
- shorter: return from Col des Fontanettes (4) directly to Grand Carroz via (8), but this means missing out on the wilder Montfred route.
- Longer: go around via La Gorgeat: at (1), continue right on the marked path towards Les Granges de Joigny and climb left towards the pass and then the summit of La Gorgeat; the descent to the Col de la Drière (2) is a fairly steep path at the start of the ridge, which the route then follows.

Worth a visit

The ridge offers unobstructed views, first towards the Cluse de Chambéry and Lac du Bourget and towards the Granier, then gradually towards the interior of the Chartreuse (Lances de Mallissard, Dent de Crolles, Chamechaude, Grand and Petit Soms).
Mont Outheran is omnipresent opposite.

This hike is classified as moderate, but I consider it quite difficult, with a section along the ridges where you need to be very careful and sometimes use your hands, after a steep climb through the woods. I extended the route by going via the barns at Joigny and the Pointe de la Gorgeat, where the path is difficult to find even with GPS and the steep slope makes it uninviting. Otherwise, it's a beautiful hike, pleasant in summer with lots of undergrowth.

A magnificent route alternating between forest trails and ridge paths offering exceptional panoramic views.
Be careful to follow the route on the app, however, as much of the hike is not marked.
Unfortunately, I encountered two Kengals protecting their sheep and was forced to take a long detour through the forest, which was not easy at all.

A very pleasant hike with no particular difficulties, but the ridge walk between Mont Gorgeat and Col des Fontanettes requires great care. Avoid at all costs after a period of rain. Magnificent views of the Chartreuse, Chambéry and Lac du Bourget.

Pleasant hike along the ridges of Grand Carroz, clearly marked trails, just be careful at the point
the 1401-metre altitude point to turn left and join the forest track 150 metres below.

Superb walks along the ridges.
At the end, you're really off the beaten track. You need a GPS so you don't get lost. We did the hike with children aged 4 to 13, and it could have been very difficult without a good GPS.
Superb scenery!
