Panorama of Oberhaslach

This route through the forest takes you up to the higher parts of the village and to lesser-known sites such as the ruins of Petit Ringelsberg Castle, the Gallo-Roman remains, and the ruins of Ringelstein and Hohenstein Castles. A quick visit to Saint-Florent Chapel is a must, where numerous ex-votos are on display.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park on Rue du Nideck.

(S/E) Cross Rue du Nideck at the pedestrian crossing, turn right towards the town hall, then turn left into Rue des Écoles. Pass Rue Saint-Florent on your left and continue straight on until the next junction.

(1) Turn right onto Rue des Sapins, then left onto Rue des Pèlerins.

(2) Turn right onto Rue de la Source, which leads to the edge of the forest.

(3) Once in the forest, take the path on the left (the steepest one) for about 200 m; this leads to a small junction where you should continue straight on until the next crossroads.

(4) Take the steep path on the left, marked with a Yellow Cross. Climb for about 1.7 km (the main difficulty of the route) following the markings and ignoring the paths on either side. Once you reach the plateau, the path turns left and heads west-south-west. Then turn left to reach the Rocher du Pfaffenlapp (663 m), which offers a superb view over the whole of the Alsace plain and the Hasel and Bruche valleys.

(5) Turn back to the junction, then continue left along the Yellow Cross-marked path, which leads to the Carrefour du Brigadier Jérôme 200 m further on.

(6) At this junction, turn left, following the Yellow Cross, Yellow Triangle and then Blue markings to reach the Carrefour des Anlagen.

(7) From there, take the path on the left, marked with a Blue Ring, which is situated about 50 m below the crossroads. The path leading to the summit of Petit Ringelsberg (641 m) passes through some Gallo-Roman ruins.

(8) Continuing to follow the Blue Ring, a short descent followed by a gentle climb will lead you to the ruins of Ringelstein Castle at the summit of the Grand Ringelsberg (645 m).

(9) For the descent, follow the Blue Ring (a descent of around 400 m – take care) then the path on the right, still marked with a Blue Ring.

(10) Take the hairpin bend to the left, following the Yellow Ring and Yellow Cross markings. On the way, you will pass close to the ruins of Hohenstein Castle.

(11) Keep left and continue for about 450 m. Then turn right onto the path marked with a Yellow Cross.

(12) Turn right to reach the village via Rue de Ringelstein to Rue Saint-Florent. Take a short detour to the right to visit the Saint-Florent Chapel.

(13) Turn back and continue straight along Rue Saint-Florent, turn right into Rue des Écoles, then right again at the junction onto Rue du Nideck to return to your starting point (S/E).

Without beating about the bush, we ended up covering 15km.... Given that it’s listed as a moderate hike, I’d say it’s actually quite challenging (for 72-year-olds); there are some steep climbs, and the first one, described as the steepest, is a walk in the park compared to the ascent of the Petit Ringelsberg. Walking poles and good shoes are essential. The Pfaffenlapp rocks are well worth the effort; it’s a lovely spot for a picnic.

Hello,
A pleasant walk with several beautiful views up to marker 9. After that, the route follows a wide forest track. You can take other paths to return to Oberhaslach from marker 10 and the Hohenstein ruins. However, please be aware if you go during the week: forestry work has been taking place since 18 May and will continue for two months (path marked with red stakes and Yellow Rings).
