Start: Overton Train Station, Station Hill, Overton, Hampshire, (RG25 3JG) Grid Ref. SU 5176 5080
(S) We start our walk at Overton Train Station. When you come out of the station, take a left (North-East) onto Hilltop Road and then a right (South-East) onto Station Approach. Walk up (South East and then South) along Station Approach for 870 m.
When the road merges with Kingsdown Lane, take right (South) and then take the first street on your left (South) leading to Polhampton Road. Turn right (East) onto Polhampton Farm Road. Follow this road for 430 m (East and then North East)
(1) Turn right (South East) onto Straight Lane. After 100m, you find a footpath on your right running parallel to the road. Take this footpath to continue your walk safely. After 240 m, exit the footpath on your left, crossing Straight Lane. Carry on straight ahead (North-East) on the other side of the road. Walk on this path for 260 m until you reach a 4 ways path junction.
(2)Take the second footpath on your right heading South East and follow this path across the fields and crops for 620 m. Follow the path to exit the fields and turn left. You can see a farm in front of you, walk up to it.
(3) Then turn right (East) on Lower Ashe Farm. Just after the farm you arrive at the Holy Trinity & St Andrews Church. Continue straight (South East) with the Church on your left-hand side and you arrive at the crossroad with Ashe Lane.
'Optional: If you want to see the house of Madam Lefroy, who was Jane Austen's mentor and aunt of the author's first love, Tom Lefroy, turn right on Ashe Lane. It is the house just after the tree tunnel, opposite the tennis court. Then, retrace your steps back to the crossroads with Lower Ashe Farm'.
(4) You can see the signpost for the footpath at the bottom of some stairs on the opposite side of Ashe Lane. Take this path heading towards the East and then towards the North East. Stay on this path for 1.15 Km. As you walk through the fields you start seeing the square tower of a Church. This is All Saints Church. Walk in this direction until the footpath ends as you arrive at the Churchyard entrance gate. Take right (South East) onto the alleyway in front of the Church, you pass in front of the rectory house and then get to the crossroad with Manor Farm Lane.
(5) Take a right (South East) onto Manor Farm Lane. There is no designated sidewalk but you can walk on the grass on the right side of the road, however, please note that from time to time you would need to walk on the road for short distances. You then arrive at the crossroad with B3400 (Andover Road).
(6) Take Steventon Way ahead of you (South) at the corner of the Palm Brasserie. After 190 m, you find a footpath on your left called Steventon Walk. Take this footpath (South East) and follow it for 900 m. You then find the entrance to a field on your right. Enter the field and walk on the designated footpath (South West) alongside the crop bordered by a forested area called Ashe Park Copse on your right. At the end of the path, you walk down a couple of stairs and you arrive on Ashe Park Lane.
(7) Walk inside the tunnel on your left (South) going under the railway tracks. Continue walking down (South-West) on Ash Park Lane. Please note that there are no designated sidewalks on this road and very small patches of grass on each side, not large enough for you to walk on. Therefore you would need to walk on the road. After 260 m, the road splits into 2.
(8) Take Steventon Road on your left (South-East). After 440m, you arrive at an intersection. Take right (South) onto a small countryside road (Church Lane). There are no sidewalks but you can find space on each side of the road to walk. Walk down (South) Church Lane for 630 m passing by a forest area and tree tunnels. At the end, you arrive at St Nichola's Church where Jane Austen's father was a rector. You can find the tombs of Jane Austen's parents in the churchyard. Opposite the Church is Steventon Manor. There is a field behind the church where you can sit to have lunch.
(9) Walk back to Church Lane where the entrance gate of Steven Manor with the intercom on a pillar is and then take left (West) onto the footpath just after the entrance gate. The footpath goes alongside Steventon Manor's front yard. As the footpath bends towards the South West, you find a footpath going across a field on your right (North West).
(10) Take this footpath and follow it until you arrive at the crossroad with Ashe Park Lane. Cross the road and carry on the footpath in front of you. Continue on this path (North-West) until you arrive at another tunnel to walk under the railway tracks.
(11) Once on the other side of the tunnel, keep walking on the same footpath heading North-West. When you arrive at the end of the first field, take left (West) onto the dirt road and then right (North West) to enter another field. Please note that if by mistake, you continue on the dirt road when it turns left (South) you find yourself at a dead end as the fields around you are private properties. So you can't get it wrong.
When you get to the opposite side of the field you arrive on Burley Lane. Cross the road and continue your journey taking the footpath on the other side. You walk across another field and then the path goes alongside a forested area called Berrydown Copse. After the footpath becomes a countryside lane bordered by bushes and trees. Continue on this lane for 240 m. You arrive at a junction.
(12) Turn right (North) onto Berrydown Lane. You know you are on the right path if you walk past a bull farm. If the bulls are not out on the fields you can see them inside the barns. Walk up (North) Berry Down Lane for 680 m until you arrive at the crossroad with B3400 (London Road). Cross the road safely. Please note there are no zebra crossings. Continue up (North) Straight Lane on the other side. After 170m, you find a footpath on your left running parallel to the road for 340m.
(13) Turn right (East) and walk across Straight Lane. Take the footpath in front of you on the other side of the road going through a field North East. Follow it for 300 m. Then the footpath turn left (North). Continue on the same path for another 270 m. You then are back at the crossroad mentioned on waypoint (2).Take the path ahead of you (North) and walk on this path for 300 m. The path bends to the right (North East).
(14) As you reach a junction at the end of the path, turn left on Polhampton Farm Road. The road is heading North-West, then West and then South-West following the flow of the River Test. You walk past waypoint (1) at the crossing with Straight Lane and from there you need to retrace your steps to the station.
Walk on Polhampton Farm road for a further 450m after the crossing with Straight Lane. Then turn right (North) onto Station Road. The road then splits into 2. Stick to the road on your left (West) called Station Approach. Walk up (North then North-West) Station Approach for 370 m and you arrive at the station.
