Killingworth to Gosforth - Angel's Way

This urban section of the Angel's Way is broken up with a walk around Gosforth Golf Course and optionally the Gosforth Nature Reserve, finishing at the Brandling Villa.

Description

(S) From the bus stop on Southgate road by Killingworth Lake, cross the road and walk south until you see a cycle path to your left through a wooded area, follow this path.

(1) When you reach Great Lime Road (B1505), turn right and walk along the road, you will pass a number of takeaways and then walk under the railway bridge.

(2) Carry on straight and when you reach a roundabout, turn left at the West Moor and District Social Club into Benton Lane (B1505). Follow Benton Lane until you reach the large roundabout, continue straight over the roundabout into Salters Lane (A189). Continue down Salter's Lane, crossing the roundabout.

(3) Carry on straight and about 150m after the roundabout you will see a business park on your left and a cottage on your right. Cross the road using the pedestrian crossing and follow the track (Heathery Lane) at the side of the cottage.

(4) At the bend in the road, turn left towards Gosforth Golf Club. Watch out for golf balls as the course lies on either side of this track.

(5) At the end of the track, cross the bridge over Ouseburn into Woodlea Gardens. At the junction turn left into Hollywood Avenue, this will become Turnberry Way.

(6) At the end of the road, take the footbridge over the railway lines into Hunters Road. Walk down Hunters Road until you reach A189 where your turn right on Station Road to the Brandling Villa and South Gosforth train station (E).

Practical information

  • Transport: The Arriva 52 service (Newcastle to Whitley Bay) or Stagecoach X63 service connects the South Gosforth to Killingworth Lake where there is parking. From the Brandling Arms head east along Benton Park Road, crossing the double roundabout to the bus stop. To catch the metro back to Newcastle, head west along Station Road to the metro station.
  • Facilities: There are cafes in Killingworth Town Centre at the start of the walk and the Brandling Villa is a good place to stop at the end of the walk.
  • Accessibility: The walk is on paved or gravel tracks for the entire duration. There are however steps up and over the railway bridge (6). If you are unable to use the steps, turn left and cross Salters Bridge at the end of Hollywood Avenue. Follow this road until you reach Salters Lane, turn right and continue under the railway bridge onto Killingworth Road which will take you to the Brandling Villa.

  • Gosforth Nature Researve which is on Salter's Lane before you reach (3). You will need to cross the road before you reach the pedestrian crossing, as it is a dual carriageway here please be careful.
