Olmeta di Tuda – Cross of San Giovanni

A lovely circular walk featuring a section through mid-mountain terrain. First across the Costa Nuda plateau at an altitude of 634 m, then on to the Col de San Giovanni at 705 m. At this point on the route, walkers will certainly climb up to the eponymous cross at 726 m, where they can stop to take in the beautiful scenery. Views over both seas (the Tyrrhenian and the Mediterranean), the Chjurlinu-Biguglia lagoon, the Nebbiu and Conca d’Oru plains, and the Tenda Massif. Hikers will also discover an ancient threshing floor (aghja in the Corsican language) with its round stone for threshing wheat, which still stands on the site.
The return journey from the San Giovanni Pass begins heading west and continues to Bocca di Pardino, offering superb panoramic views of the Patrimonio appellation vineyards, the Gulf of Saint Florent and the start of Cap Corse. At the pass, the route heads south towards the village of Olmeta di Tuda.

Description of the walk

By car, head to Olmeta di Tuda.
Coming from the Bastia area:
- at Biguglia, take the D62 (and explore the Lancone Gorge)
or
- at Ortale de Biguglia (roundabout no. 4), take the D82 towards Oletta-Rutali-Saint-Florent
Both routes lead to the Col de Santo Stefano, which marks the entrance to the Nebbiu region.

Park in the municipal car park, opposite Tuda Castle.

Along the route
Markings: Yellow paint, fluorescent yellow paint + cairns
Signage: Wooden and iron signs

(S/E) Olmeta di Tuda Municipal Car Park
Leave the car park via the dirt track heading east and head towards the tennis court, which is in sight

(1) Walk alongside the tennis court, then round its right-hand side. After the spring, climb the steps and follow a short path to reach the D82 road. Walk up the road, carefully crossing a 50-metre stretch without a pavement.

(2) After 150 m, cross the road opposite a concrete utility room, which you should go round to the right of. Walk up to the gate, go through it and close it behind you, then follow the path. Pass by the enclosure of the first reservoir and continue to the right along the track for 400 m until you reach asecond reservoir.

(3) Go round this second reservoir to the left and begin the climb up the path, heading north, following the iron sign for “Bocca San Ghjuvan”. At the highest point, a rest stop on the Costa Nuda plateau is a must to take in the panoramic views. Continue along the gently sloping path to reach the Col de San Giovanni – altitude 705 m.

(4) You’ll come to a scree slope signposted “Chjassu Ornitulogicu”, another hiking route in the area. Turn right for 50 m, heading east. At the threshing floor, where an iron sign marks the spot, follow the path branching off to the left. After 100 m, climb the mound on the left up to the Cross of San Giovanni – altitude 726 m.

(5) Go round the cross and follow the track southwards, which descends to point no. 4, with the “Chjassu Ornitulogicu” signpost in sight.

(4) At the scree slope, head straight down westwards for about 100 m through low scrub.

(6) Find the markings on the rock and follow the very rocky path with a steep gradient. At the lowest point, reach a plateau marked by a collapsed low wall and continue in the same direction for 150 m.

(7) Look out for the markings on the ground and head south-west. Further on, the path is lined with scrubland as far as Bocca di Pardinu.

(8) Reach the pass and turn left towards Olmeta – metal sign. After passing a shepherd’s hut, cross a stream and continue along the path for 600 m.

(9) At a very sharp bend in the path, turn right and walk alongside the fence of the first house you see. Go through a small gate to reach the road leading to the highest part of the village. Walk downhill for 200 m.

(10) Walk along the cemetery wall on your left until you reach the D82 road. Cross the road and enter the village.

(S/E) Head to the municipal car park

Notes

From 15 July to 31 October 2026

it is strongly advised not to use this route

Given the successive heatwaves since the end of May, our association has not been able to clear the paths using the appropriate thermal equipment, for one thing.

Furthermore, the heat, drought and windy conditions are conducive to the outbreak of fires, which pose a maximum risk to walkers.

In these extreme conditions, you should opt for short walks along the coast or riverside. Avoid any routes crossing scrubland and/or leading to mid-mountain passes.

Drinking water points at the start/finish

  • behind the tennis court, before the steps.
  • Acquatella Fountain and wash house, 80 m from the car park: exit towards the village and take the alleyway that runs down alongside the castle wall.

Shelters

  • on the descent from the Col de Pardinu, Pagliaghju – Shepherd’s shelter.
  • Acquatella Fountain – Washhouse, 80 m from the car park.

Shops at the Col de Santo Stefano

  • Bakery – catering
  • Restaurant – cheese shop

Worth a visit

  • Landscapes – Viewpoints along the entire route.
  • San Giovanni Pass with its cross and threshing floor (aghja).
  • A tour of the village and the narrow streets of Olmeta di Tuda, before or after the hike.
  • Santa Maria Church (open to visitors).
  • Acquatella Fountain.
  • Tuda Castle (private)

A fairly steep climb follows a gate that needs to be lifted, signposted as a local footpath, then a climb along a path where it’s easy to slip (dry earth and gravel): proper footwear is essential. Further on, the path—which remains narrow—becomes rockier.
A narrow path through the maquis vegetation; hiking trousers are absolutely essential. The threshing area is clearly marked out; a large round stone is visible... was this the one used for threshing?
Panoramic view of the two seas once at the top – MAGNIFICENT (windy... it was cooler, so bring something to cover up with)
Descent over scree; with your ankles well supported by your boots, everything’s fine. It’s a bit of a challenge and a bit of a mess trying to find your way, even though there are cairns and yellow markings, as there are several hiking trails.
The Viso Rando track helped us correct one or two mistakes on the way back.
Final descent along a path that’s a bit overgrown; watch out for brambles and broom. A grass snake was basking in the sun... we startled it.
HIKE took 3 hours 40 minutes, but we had a picnic at the top for at least 30 minutes

An interesting loop offering a variety of landscapes.
Points to note:
- the route starts at the second concrete maintenance shed. The path to the right of the first shed is a dead end.
- brambles and ferns have invaded the return route from point 4 onwards.
- the stone for threshing wheat on the threshing floor (point 4) has disappeared...
What remains are the beautiful views from the cross at San Giovanni, which are what make this hike so interesting.

Hello LAFAY,
First of all, I’m sorry that this route didn’t live up to your expectations.
1. “The start of the walk isn’t easy to find”
However, in Olmeta di tuda, the route is clearly visible: Car park > Stadium > Tennis court > D82 road, and the fluorescent yellow markings are there to help. Perhaps you didn’t read the route description?
2. “The descent after the cross is quite difficult with lots of stones…”
Setting off on a rocky path with a steep gradient is exactly what I specified in point 6. I’ve just amended this to ‘very rocky path’ following your comment.
3. “…and the end of the path isn’t very visible”
You will no doubt have noticed that we are in mid-mountain terrain. At this altitude, with no possibility of using ‘off-road’ vehicles, the maintenance, marking and signposting of the paths are carried out manually and on a voluntary basis. So, of course, we’re not on motorways, and from time to time the path is narrow and a bit of a slog. (NB: discussions are underway about reintroducing donkeys and mules to carry equipment, just like our ancestors did)
4. “…as for the path leading to the cemetery, it’s hard to find because it’s very poorly maintained”
Well, there’s only one explanation for that: above the first houses in the village, you didn’t follow the yellow markings – which are clearly visible, I’ve checked – indicating that you should head down to the right (to find the gate and then the track).
By continuing along the hillside for about a hundred metres, you followed an unmaintained path which does indeed pass above the cemetery on private land.
Until now, I hadn’t received any comments about this section, even though it’s used by another route I created on Visorando, ‘Bocca di Pardinu’.
However, I have taken your comment on board by amending my description to add that, at this point, the path turns 180° to the right.
5. “What’s more, it takes over 2 hours 50 minutes!!!!”
“Average duration calculated based on distance, elevation gain and a speed of 3.5 km/h. For an average walker, this duration includes reasonable breaks.”
This is what the Visorando website administrators specify when giving the average duration of the walk.
(They do not take into account the route creator’s opinion, and quite rightly so. For my part, I would have said 2 hours 15 minutes).

I hope this reply – a bit long, I know – will encourage you to revisit our Nebbiu walking trails. Kind regards.

The start of the walk isn’t easy to find.
The descent after the cross is quite difficult, with lots of stones, and the end of the path isn’t very visible; as for the finish near the cemetery, it’s hard to find as it’s very poorly maintained.
Otherwise, the view from the cross is magnificent.
What’s more, it takes over 2 hours and 50 minutes!!!!
