Nuits St Georges to Gevrey Chambertin - Route des Grands Crus

This is stage 7 in the series of Route des Grands Crus walks runs from Nuits-St-Georges through the vineyards and woods and combes to Gevrey-Chambertin. Both of these small towns are host to some of the most famous red wines in the world as are some of the charming villages and landmarks in between like Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny and Chateau de Vougeot.
It is a dog friendly walk (there is a good veterinary surgery in Nuits). It is a fairly long and reasonably challenging walk as there are some climbs in the middle leading off the vineyards into the woods. Return by bus and train is possible to the start.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Route des Grands Crus (RDGC)

Description of the walk

Start: Parking is available nearby by the side of the small river Le Meuzin near the start point or nearer the centre of the town in a free carpark. There are train and bus services.

(S) To follow on the RDGC from Walk 6, start at the Cross at Junction of Chemins de Plateau, Rue de L'Ermitage, Rue Edme Bergeret, and Rue de Charmois. Follow Rue de Charmois North and the Yellow and Red (YR) sign then across the stream (Le Meuzin)and continue left to follow the YR signs through Rue de 'Egalite', past l'Eglise Saint Symphorien (church) on your left.

(1) Then, turn left at Rue Caumont Bréon and take a quick right along Rue Saint Symphorien. Then soon at a staggered 4-way junction you reach the edge of the town looking out into the fields (this would also be a good starting point).

Cross the road taking you through the vineyards North-East on the RDGC for 2 Km, often following YR signs for straight on, until you reach the top of Vosne-Romanée village and go left at the T-junction to soon reach another Junction.

(2) At the junction turn right at the YR sign where the world famous Romanée Conti vineyard is marked by a plaque on the wall. Soon pass a cross dedicated to the originator of this wine Pierre Argot in 1723, also a sign asking tourists not to go into the vineyards so please don’t!

Reach a T-junction where you take a right turn and go immediate left and commence a 1 Km walk towards the Chateau at Vougeot. Halfway there see the stone sign for Echeteau on the right and begin to see the rocky Combe on the left. Reach the Chateau at a 4 way junction.

(3) Go straight on past the castle (and for mathematicians a concrete trapezium) and after 100 m follow the signs left to Chambolle-Musigny. After another 100m go up left following YR sign and at the top go round right following the road and behind you is a view down to the Chateau (and beyond that the famous Clos de Vougeot vineyard ). Follow the path round till you eventually see the village of Chambolle-Mousigny below you and a view of the Combe. Drop right down into the village until at the very bottom you reach Rue de la Fontaine.

(4) Here at the far end of the village road in Chambolle there is a road T-junction with a stone Cross and also straight on at a marked YR is a small very steep narrower path - take this and walk up hill following the track into the woods.

After 0.5 Km ignore a road on the right back down to the village or to Morey-St-Denis, instead join the road going straight on and a further 0.5 km will see you to the top. Ignoring a left turn you will fork right to join a less well defined path and commence a flatter 1 Km section which becomes a path through the woods towards Morey.

(5) Eventually turn down right, down through vineyards into Morey-St-Denis. As you come down eventually you go past Rue de la Bidaude on the left and soon reach a left turn just before the village itself and reach a series of right angle turns all marked YR and featuring what looks like a bandstand. Follow the very narrow path between buildings to emerge onto Rue Haute in Morey and reach.

(6) At top of Rue Haute there is a T junction take right onto Rue de la Montagne then turn left at the Place du Monument YR sign into Rue Aux Loups out in to the country through the vineyards and keep following the YR signs North to take you towards Gevrey, during which you pass Clos de la Roche vineyard and then see and ignore left and right 3-way junctions.

(7) After about 1 Km, you will be near another 3-way junction, at which turning right would take you to the D122 Grand Crus road route; instead, here fork left upwards off the track into the woods then soon back right downwards for another 1 Km taking you parallel with and eventually back on to the track you were on and you approach Gevrey-Chambertin outskirts just after a view point.

(8) Reach a right turn at a yellow sign onto Rue de Curley and quick left following the usual YR sign onto Chemin des Issarts briefly, before taking a right hand track off the road through the vineyards up to Rue de Mexvelle and this leads you finally to Rue de l'Eglise and to finish at the Church in Gevrey Chambertin. (E)

The RDGC walk transitions to Walk 8 is here but to visit the town turn right in to the town of Gevrey famous of course for its Gevrey Chambertin Grand Cru red wine. Return to Nuits if needed can be by bus or train (the train station is over on the other side of town)

Worth a visit

The Tourist Information Centre at end Rue Halles in Gevrey has an exceptional museum with a great history of the region going back several millenia. The villages of Vosne Roamanee Moray-St-Denis and Chambolle Musigny are charming historic villages. At Chateau Vougeot there is a tourist shop which you can visit without going into the castle if you have not the time for the tour.
