Description of the walk

This route, from Morschach to Vitznau, corresponds to part of stage 4 of the Weg der Schweiz ( No. 99) and the first stage of the Waldstätterweg (No. 98).

The starting point for this stage is the Antoniushaus hotel in Mattli (Morschach).

Signposting: signs with the No. 99 sticker on a green background (Weg der Schweiz)

(S) From the Antoniushaus, head towards the centre of Morschach, passing the Swiss Holiday Park.

(1) Heading north, on the left, following the various No. 99 signs, you will arrive at a viewpoint on a bend in the road to Axenstein.

(2) Leave the road and take the path that descends opposite towards Brunnen. Follow the various signs marked No. 99 and you will come to a small road.

(3) Follow this small winding road down towards Brunnen and return to the lake at the Brunnen ferry terminal.

Signposting: signs with the No. 98 sticker on a green background (Waldstätterweg)

(4) Turn right and walk along the lake shore to the mouth of the Muota River. Turn right and follow the Muota to the first bridge and cross it.

(5) Return to the left, towards the lake, and follow a path that passes between the marshy area and the Brunnen campsite. Return to the cantonal road and walk on the left-hand pavement (lake side) to the small port of Fallenbach.

(6) At signpost No. 98, where the route should leave the road and take a balcony path, a sign indicates that the path is closed for an indefinite period due to rockfalls. A diversion is in place, which consists of continuing along the cantonal road along the lake to the next point. See the "Practical information" section: It is important to check for any closures and diversions. Follow the country road to a hiking sign at the end of the diversion.

(7) Cross the road with caution. Take the path that joins a small road and you will soon come to signpost No. 98.

(8) Begin a steep climb through the forest, ending at signpost No. 98, which marks the end of the climb.

(9) Gradually descend towards the small town of Gersau.

(10) Walk along the lake to the mouth of the Innere Dorfbach. Turn right and walk along the river to the north of Gersau until you reach a bridge.

(11) Cross the bridge and follow signpost No. 98 along a small road above Gersau.

(12) Leave the road and continue left uphill to Blätzen.

(13) Still heading west, as indicated by signpost No. 98, make one more effort to reach the Unter Rengg farm. Begin the descent and return to a small road at a place called Ebnet.

(14) Walk along this road and gradually descend towards the lake at Bürglen.

(15) Take a small winding path to reach the lakeside road (Seestrasse). Follow it to the entrance to the town of Vitznau.

(16) Leave path No. 98 and take Seestrasse to the rack railway station, which climbs to the summit of the Rigi.

(17) Go around the Rigi train depot to reach the Vitznau ferry terminal and the Terrasse am See hotel, where you will spend the night. (E)
