Carrión de los Condes - Moratinos

Sixtieth stage of the Camino de Santiago. A carefree stage... it’s flat... flat... flat! Few village crossings. The route is less desolate than the previous stage, yet there isn’t much to discover. But this may be an opportunity to listen to the silence and reflect on what truly drove us to reach Santiago!

Description of the walk

(S) Leave the campsite and head left to cross Calistenia Park, which runs alongside the River Carrión. Cross Calle Enrique Fuentes Quintana and continue through the second park heading north-west. Before the bridge, take the stairs on the right to reach Calle Adolfo Suárez. Turn left and continue to the bridge.

(1) Cross the bridge and continue round the bend to the right. Pass the Monastery of San Zoilo before reaching the roundabout on the outskirts of the town.

(2) Take the second exit, heading towards León via the N-120. Continue to the petrol station.

(3) Cross the road carefully to continue on the left-hand pavement and carry on to the roundabout.

(4) Cross the N-120 with care and follow the signs for Villotilla. Continue along the PP-2411 until you reach the Rodada Stream crossing (blue barrier).

(5) Continue westwards to the boundary marker.

(6) Continue in the same direction until you reach the entrance to the Abbey of Santa Maria de Benevivere.

(7) Continue south-west/west, cross a bridge past a picnic area and carry on to the junction in the bend on the right.

(8) Leave the PP-2411 and continue straight on towards Ruta de la Calzada, along a wide, stony track lined with shrubs. Continue to the picnic area.

(9) Continue west/south-west to the stop sign at the junction with the P-2469.

(10) Cross carefully and continue to a signpost.

(11) Walk on to the boundary marker.

(12) Continue in this west/south-westerly direction to the boundary marker and the picnic area.

(13) Walk to the marker.

(14) Still heading west/south-west, continue to the next marker.

(15) Continue to the next marker.

(16) Continue until you reach the municipal hostel in the village of Calzadilla de la Cueza.

(17) Go round the right-hand side of the building, then walk straight through the village until you reach the Stop sign.

(18) Turn right onto the N-120 towards Ledigos. Walk along this road for about a hundred metres, then, after the sign for Rio Cueza, carefully cross the N-120 to continue along the white path heading towards the wooded hills in the distance. Continue to the fork. Please note: here the path offers an alternative route that takes you through the woods rather than following a straight path.

(19) Turn left, cross a stream and then go through a small wood to arrive beneath a high-voltage power line.

(20) Continue through the woods before skirting the edge. Carry on to the crossroads.

(21) Continue north-west and proceed to the fork. Please note: there is also an alternative route here.

(22) Continue north-west to enter the woods. You will arrive beneath a high-voltage power line.

(23) Leave the woods and follow the edge before joining the N-120.

(24) Turn left onto the path running parallel to the road and continue to the picnic area on the other side of the road, marked by a signpost.

(25) Continue north-west until the path briefly takes you away from the road, following a slight bend

(26) Continue until you reach the N-120 and cross it carefully.

(27) Continue along the small road opposite, which leads you to the village of Ledigos.

(28) Enter the village heading north and you will come to a lay-by.

(29) Turn right (north), pass the sports grounds and continue straight on along the dead-end road to join the N-120

(30) Cross carefully to follow a white path hidden by a hedge and running parallel to the road, then continue along it until you reach the sign for Rio Cueza.

(31) Cross the N-120 carefully to cross the stream on the other side of the road, then cross back over carefully to return to the path. Continue until you reach the wide bend to the left.

(32) Stay on the path, passing the Albergue Los Templarios before returning to the N-120 at a junction.

(33) Turn left and continue on to enter the village of Terradillos de los Templarios. Walk through this small village, past the Church of San Pedro, before first turning right then left to pass the Albergue Jacques De Molay. Continue to the junction.

(34) First turn right then left to leave the village via a small road through the fields. Pass under a high-voltage power line before reaching the junction leading onto the P-973, opposite an area covered in solar panels.

(35) Turn left and follow this small tarmac road until you reach the signpost indicating the direction of Morantinos.

(36) Turn right. Walk towards the woods to cross the Arroyo de San Juan stream and a few metres further on you will find yourself at the picnic area (E) where you can set up camp for the night. Drinking water available on site.

Notes

Provisions: at the start, don’t forget to pack enough food for the day and beyond...
Camping: no campsite. Camping planned at a rest area set up for pilgrims.
Note: as the stage is flat, if you feel able to walk a little further than 12 km, there is a campsite in the town of Sahagún.

Worth a visit

It is sometimes good to be in touch with nature, to become aware of the immensity that surrounds us without being on the alert and eager to discover anything other than oneself! Nevertheless, do not miss a visit to the Monastery of San Zoilo (2), located on the outskirts of Carrión de los Condes, notable for its Renaissance cloister.

(27) In Ledigos: the Church of Saint James, built on a hilltop and rebuilt in the 17th century, which houses a beautiful statue of the apostle.
