Koumoingoué Mountains - Pic aux Chèvres and view of La Croix

A short but intense hike starting from Dumbéa. The Koumoingoué Mountains offer superb panoramic views of Greater Nouméa to the south and the mountains to the north. Please note that the trail is technical in places: sturdy footwear is essential.

Description of the walk

Park in one of the many parking spaces available on Rue du Colporteur. As the trailhead is located at the end of the cul-de-sac, don't hesitate to drive to the end of the street, then turn around before parking.

(S/E) The start of the trail is not very visible from the street. It is located directly opposite, in line with the street, and a slope begins the ascent towards the Koumoingoué Mountains. Climb this small embankment on the right, after stepping over a small gutter, and take the path that immediately becomes visible. This path is not very well maintained in the first section and crosses a kind of forest of small bamboo trees that often obscure the view of the trail: follow the GPS track carefully. Reach the first summit.

(1) From there, the path opens up and you walk through tall grass with a magnificent view. In places, the path is a real ridge path, so be careful not to stray from the path as the walls are very close and there is a risk of falling.

(2) Continue to follow the path that climbs further to the right, ignoring the one that descends into the valley.

(3) Cross a large rock: the path goes over it; do not try to go around it. Reach Pic aux Chèvres: panoramic view.

(4) From here, the path becomes technical, with fairly steep descents and the drop not far away: take great care where you place your feet. Continue along the same path, keeping straight ahead. Climb two small intermediate peaks before reachingthe cross and its sublime panoramic view.

(5) Turn back and follow the ascent route in the opposite direction, paying the same attention to the various tricky sections. Return to Rue du Colporteur and find your vehicle (S/E).

Notes

Wear sturdy shoes and possibly long trousers (lots of tall grass). Do not walk in rainy weather. Don't forget water and sun protection.

This is a ridge path, so be careful not to stray from the trail. The walls are very close at times, so there is a risk of falling.

Walking sticks are useful. Good shoes are essential.

Worth a visit

Magnificent panorama over Greater Nouméa.

Dry forest.

A route that’s hardly ever used, if not completely unusable.
Only 30 minutes on this route and 30 minutes deep in the jungle.
No path at all, just very dense vegetation for the whole 30 minutes.
Unfortunately, not really worth it.
