Start at Montenoy, near the church.
(S/E) Take Rue Lassus eastwards (towards Leyr), then turn right onto Rue Jean-Jaurès. Continue to the end of the street and reach the junction with the D90. Turn left and take the Mauchère Greenway (former railway line). Follow this Voie Verte for a few hundred metres until you reach the junction with a wide path.
(1) Head left up towards the forest, then turn right and follow the edge of the forest for about a hundred metres, until the path climbs to the left and enters the forest.
(2) At this point, there is a lovely view of the valley. Head up the path to the left for about 20–30 metres and turn immediately right (do not follow the path straight on, as it climbs very steeply). The ‘natural’ path climbs to the right and then, once you’re almost at the top, turns left; leave it. At the top of the hill, the path goes straight on and reaches a crossroads (not shown on the IGN map).
(3) Here, the path splits into three: a bend to the left; a path starting straight ahead but difficult to follow; a bend to the right followed immediately by another to the left: it is this third path that you must follow.
Note: Along this route, there are numerous small side paths branching off to the right or left, which may cause some confusion. You should follow what can be described as the ‘main’ path – the ridge path that skirts the plateau – and ignore these side paths.
Continue straight on until you reach another bend to the left. There, the path runs in a long straight line and leads onto an open plateau, La Côte. At the end of this plateau, the path joins a trail marked with a Green Disc and a Yellow Ring.
(4) Turn right to follow this marked trail, which winds its way down. Here too, ignore the few side paths. Continue to the Col de Vassuchamp (signpost indicating an altitude of 361m), from where there is a view of the village of Bratte and the Natagne valley.
(5) Turn left to descend the path leading towards Bratte and arrive at a small clearing just at the entrance to the village.
(6) Turn immediately left onto a path that climbs towards the forest (as you pass, take a look at the large entrance gate to the farmyard). Walk past the water tank and enter the forest.
(7) At the start, in the forest, the path climbs steeply before levelling off into a gentler slope. Follow this narrow path running along the edge of the woodland, which is marked by numerous fluorescent pink paint dots on the trees. You’ll emerge at a junction as you leave the forest on the other side of the hill (view of the Mauchère valley).
(8) You will see a large pylon (civil aviation relay) on your right. Leave the forest by taking the path leading towards it. Walk past the pylon and you will reach a Y-junction.
(9) Turn left and continue straight on towards another pylon (high-voltage power line). Pass under this high-voltage line.
(10) Continue straight on along the path which descends towards a copse.
(11) As you emerge from the copse, shortly after passing under the high-voltage line, take a moment to stop and admire the magnificent view over the valley.
Continue along the path leading down towards Faulx, but take care as the final section of this path is steep and covered in small stones that can sometimes roll under your shoes, potentially causing you to slip.
On reaching Faulx, turn left to join Rue du Chambion. Turn right to cross the village, then take the first left onto Promenade du Val de Faulx and continue to the church, crossing Rue de la Libération.
(12) At the junction in front of the church, continue to the right, then immediately left onto Rue Saint-Pierre, then turn right again to join the old railway line (Mauchère greenway). Turn left and follow this greenway to Montenoy.
At the first houses, turn left to join the D90. Cross the road, continue straight ahead along Rue de la Halle, then turn right to reach Place de l’Église (S/E).
