Balcony above the Dranse river at the start of the hike in Armoy

A short hike that ends at a dead end... This is an opportunity to venture into a little-visited forest and walk along the slopes overlooking the Dranse River above its gorges. Expect to find damp vegetation where moss grows freely.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park, cemetery and town hall in Armoy.

No signposts

(S/E) On leaving the car park, turn left onto Route du Bois de la Cour, towards the town centre.

(1) Cross the D26 at the pedestrian crossing on the left. Follow the road to the left towards Thonon-les-Bains and stay on the right-hand pavement. Pass in front of Armoy church.

Red and white markings

(2) At the corner of the church, go down Chemin de Sous l'Église on the right, taking the "Thonon" variant of the GR®5. Go through a gate and turn right on the other side. At the fork that appears shortly after (elevation 618), keep right. Walk along the inner edge of the forest and follow a field on your right. At the end of the right-hand bend, ignore a path on the left and quickly reach an intersection.

(3) Then turn left and walk through the forest, on flat ground with a few bends, until you reach a crossroads.

No signposts

(4) Continue straight ahead on the signposted path with no exit (leave the GR® trail on your right and uphill). The path immediately turns right and begins to descend. Stay on this path and enter the forest, which becomes increasingly dark and damp as you descend. Make a wide hairpin turn to the left and continue downhill (through the branches, with views of the Dranse below on the right). When you reach the end of the path overlooking the river, do not attempt to go any further and be careful of the steep drops.

(5) Retrace your steps to the junction with the GR®5.

Red and white markings

(4) Turn right and follow the GR® to the next junction, which you also took on the way up.

No markings

(3) Turn left onto Chemin du Chanal and walk along the field you saw earlier on your right. When you reach Place du Chanal, cross the D26 at the pedestrian crossing.

(1) Continue straight ahead on Route du Bois de la Cour until you reach the car park for the cemetery and town hall (S/E).

Worth a visit

- The main attraction of this hike, for those who appreciate it, is the solitary walk through the heart of the forest, with its humid vegetation, between (4) and (5).
- A few views of the Dranse in the lower part of the section between (4) and (5).

Hike as described.
It is indeed quiet and completely shaded.
It's worth doing for the peace and quiet (even if there is a slight constant rumbling from the cars and the river)
Don't expect any clear views.
The hike is well suited for dogs.
