Mount Akok Ndoé

Located between Yaoundé West and Nkolbisson and with an altitude of 967 m, Mount Akok Ndoé offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Cameroonian capital.
You will have a view of the districts of Medong, Nkolbisson and all of Yaoundé, as well as the Eloundem, Nzokye, Mbog-Doum, Minlo'o and Messa mountains.
With significant elevation changes, forest and magnificent viewpoints, this hike will give you a great challenge and reward you with a breathtaking panorama.
You need to be reasonably fit to complete this hike. For those who are less fit, it is possible to do a lighter version of the route by starting from the finish (E) and heading to the point (5) for this unmissable hike.
Please note: this linear hike requires some organisation as the start and finish points are obviously different.

Description of the walk

The route starts from the Akok Ndoé chapel (see photo).
Note: from the Nkolbisson crossroads, you will pay 200 FCFA per person by motorbike.

(S) Take the main road Rue 6.5445 to the fork marking the climb to the Akok Ndoé plateau.

(1) Turn left onto a street with the steepest incline of the hike. Then reach the entrance to the forest.

(2) Continue climbing until you reach a trail junction shortly afterwards.

(3) Continue slightly to the right to complete the ascent of Mount Akok Ndoé, symbolised by a protruding rock.

(4) Begin the descent, then reach a large rock formation at the edge of the forest. Enjoy the panoramic view here.

(5) Continue downhill through the fields to reach the ASEC Bilingual School crossroads (E), the end of this hike.

Notes

I recommend wearing ankle-length trousers for the section in the forest because of the vegetation.
Also bring mosquito repellent, as there are quite a few mosquitoes.
(5): here you can see a camp with makeshift huts.
Note: for the less athletic, it is possible to take a lighter version of the route by starting from the finish (E) to reach the panoramic viewpoint (5), but you will miss the view of the western flank.

At 953 metres above sea level, Mount Mbog-Doum is the smallest of Yaoundé's seven hills. You will have a view of Nkolbisson, the Méfou Dam, Mount Akok Ndoé and Mount Minlo'o. Unfortunately, the view is obstructed halfway up by the forest, which gradually thickens towards the summit. Therefore, the only reason to continue to the summit is for the challenge it represents. This hike is not the most unmissable of the seven hills, not to say the least, but it is still enjoyable and allows you to explore the Nkolbisson neighbourhood in depth.

Rising from the banks of the Méfou Dam and slightly lower than its neighbouring twin (966 m), Mount Minlo'o peaks at just over 900 m. The absence of tall vegetation on almost the entire ascent offers a clear panoramic view of the Nkobisson district, Lake Mefou and five of the seven hills surrounding Yaoundé. Starting and ending with fairly significant elevation changes, this hike is somewhat challenging without being reserved for the most athletic. A minimum level of physical fitness is nevertheless required.

Hike on Mount Messa, circular from Mbankolo, return via Cité Verte, via the radio station. The route offers a circular loop for more variety, but the first part can be replaced by a return trip on the track that passes through point 4, particularly to make the first climb to the point (1) easier, as it is very steep.

Mount Ebaminala or Nkol Edoa, also renamed Mount Béatitudes, is one of the seven hills of Yaoundé. Located between Mount Mbankolo and Mount Messa, it rises to 983 m. The climb is accessible but still challenging, taking you along well-maintained paths and trails through lush vegetation, plantations and the heights of the mountain. Ideally located, the mountain offers views of the six other hills of Yaoundé, as well as the districts of Oyom-Abang, Nkolbisson and Mendong.

Mont Fébé and Mont Mbankolo are undoubtedly the two most famous of the seven hills surrounding the city of Yaoundé. Rising to 1,077 m and 1,096 m respectively, they are a good place to start if you want to explore the Cameroonian capital. With 90% of the route easily accessible, this hike is accessible yet challenging. From Mount Fébé, you will have a view of the entire north-west of Yaoundé and, along the way, you will find open-air art galleries, the Parcours Vita, the Mount Fébé monastery and finally the Mount Fébé Hotel.
