Minerve, La Cesse and Brian

This route around Minerve has it all! The natural bridges over the Cesse, the heath, the footbridges over the Gorges du Brian and, of course, the cobbled streets of the town.

⚠️ After rainfall, we advise you to check the conditions for crossing the River Brian (7): the ford between the town and the catapult can sometimes be covered in water or become slippery (see practical information).

This hike may be closed depending on the fire risk level. Please check the map.

Description of the walk

Parking is available on the plateau above the village of Minerve. You can park there from 8 am to 6 pm for a small fee.

(S/E) Leave the car park on the west side and join the D147E.

(1) Follow the D147E to the left, ignore the first road on the right and take the second path on the right. Enjoy the view of the natural bridges of the Gorges de la Cesse.

(2) Take the path on the right. Walk alongside the first vineyard on your right and reach the corner of the second. Head down to the left along the path through the scrubland. Cross the small ford (often dry) and climb towards the pine trees. After Le Mazet, turn right and walk back up alongside the vineyard. At the top of this, turn right and continue straight on along the main track. It crosses the Ruisseau de la Loubatière (cave dwellings) and reaches a junction.

(3) Head up the track to the left, with vineyards stretching out to your right. At the end, cross the D147 and take the track that climbs to the left. Ignore the first left and continue straight on along the concrete track that descends towards the Gorges du Brian.

(4) At the hairpin bend, follow the marked concrete track and ignore the path on the right (private road, currently being updated on IGN maps!). Pass the pumping station and continue along the path beside the Brian (slippery slabs).

(5) Cross the Daniel Bridge (take care, low parapet!) and, on the left bank, climb up to the right along the hillside path to the crossroads.

(6) Continue right along the steep path (take care near the cliffs) and arrive at a flat area. The path turns left, climbs up the valley on the left and reaches the plateau. Walk through the heath for about 200m until you reach a wide track.

(7) Turn right; the track overlooks the Gorges du Brian and the town of Minerve. After the catapult, head down the path on the right, cross the footbridge and climb the steps into the town. Take the Grand-Rue on the right, then the Rue des Remparts. On leaving the village, after the tower (Candéla), climb the narrow lane to reach the car park (S/E).

Hello, As mentioned in the description, we strongly recommend that you contact the Minerve Tourist Office (04 68 91 81 43) after heavy rain to find out about the conditions for crossing the River Brian. The footbridge is still there! However, following the exceptional rainfall of the winter of 2025/2026, it is true that the river took some time to return to its natural course.

Thank you, Jocel349, for pointing that out. I have just added the warning to the introduction.

Hike completed yesterday, 09/02/26, as a reconnaissance trip for our association. It's a shame I didn't read the reviews (for once!), as I would have appreciated T. Tremas' very useful advice. At the end of the hike, after walking along the beautiful Brian Gorges, we were blocked by the absence of the footbridge! We had the choice of either retracing the route or crossing the Cesse river in two places. We opted for the latter, but BEWARE: the second crossing was quite dangerous due to the strong current. We were surprised to find no warning signs in the Minerve car park. This will serve as a lesson to us: from now on, we will call the tourist office before each hike. For my part, it seems to me that this information could be found on Visorando, as a warning before the description. I will call tomorrow to find out if the footbridge is already scheduled to be replaced. Thank you, despite this unexpected end to the hike, to Ludo.L

I will begin with a warning: on the day of my walk, after point 7, past the trebuchet, at the bottom of the cliff, facing Minerve, there was no longer a footbridge to cross the Brian and reach the village. We had to wade across on stones that were not necessarily stable or above water. This is a common situation when hiking, but it might be worth mentioning: some people who are poorly equipped, have balance problems or are walking with children could be caught off guard at the end of the walk. I think this situation is temporary. Is it seasonal?
On the other hand, the Visorando app indicated an obstacle before point 5 (Daniel bridge), but I didn't notice anything on the ground: it's fine.
Otherwise, it was a superb walk that we were lucky enough to do under clear skies and without the summer crowds. On the other hand, we were cold on the plateau where an icy wind was blowing, a wind that we no longer felt at the bottom of the valleys.
I will definitely return with friends who are unfamiliar with the area, at a time of year when it is possible to pass through the natural tunnels created by the river under the village.

Hike completed on 1 November in mild, sunny weather – a wonderful discovery.
Elevation gain accessible for families.
Very varied landscape and well marked.
I imagine that in summer the route is scorching hot given the region.
I recommend it in spring or autumn for those who suffer from the heat.
Otherwise, the site is magnificent 👍👍👍

Hike done in scorching heat. We were hot but not thirsty with 2 litres per person.
Pretty landscapes, beautiful view of Minerve, in and above the Brian Gorges. Very pleasant picnic spot by the water. No difficulties.

Hello!
My wife and I followed the GPS track for this hike without any problems.
As an amateur videographer, I'll be making a video because the shots were great despite the grey weather.
We enjoyed the walk through Minerve, of course, but there were two highlights: the first was the walk through the gorges, which was a pleasant surprise!
The second was the dizzying view from the cliffs facing Minerve!
We thoroughly enjoyed this hike, which I would describe as easy.
In short, I highly recommend it!

The most interesting part of the route begins when you follow the Brian towards the Daniel bridge. Before that, there are tracks, some of which are concrete. Note that an area was burned down before point 4. There is little shade on this route

A varied route, first through the heath and then the gorges, with beautiful scenery and views of the Pyrenees. The finish in Minerve is breathtaking. The only regret is that there are a lot of tracks on the first half of the route, some of them concreted...

It's a lovely walk for the whole family. Lovely scenery and I particularly enjoyed the "bottom of the Briand gorge" and the walk through Minerve. Mind you, there's not much shade! The route must be very hot in summer.
