Menhirs of Le Mené

The entire Mené region, in the heart of the Armorican Massif, is dotted with large granite boulders, the eroded remains of ancient mountains. This walk offers the chance to discover a few menhirs. The ‘Chaos de Quemelin’ site is also remarkable. The Rance winds its way through a chaos of rocks. Throughout the route, you’ll notice the presence of granite, often in piles of large boulders pushed to the edges of fields or into the woods to make way for crops.

Description of the walk

The route starts between the Moulin de Cadeuc and the hamlet of Quémelin. A sign reading “Chaos de Quémelin” marks the starting point.

(S/E) Cross the Rance via the footbridge.

(1) Take the first path on the left to get closer to the stream and admire the large granite boulders. After about a hundred metres, just before the pine forest, return to the original path. At the junction, turn right.

(2) At Le Brigneul, take the road on the left, then turn onto the first path on the right. Continue to the hamlet of Le Perfaux and cross it, continuing straight ahead.

(3) Three menhirs are located around Le Perfaux. Turn right to reach the first one, which stands 6.60 m tall, then turn back. Then turn right. The second menhir lies on the side of the path in a pile of boulders. Continue straight on to reach the third megalith.

(4) This menhir, known as the Grande Perrière, is a tapered stone 5 m high. Then return to the small Brigneul road and turn right.

(5) Turn left at the junction and continue along the road, passing by the pond and Langourla Castle before crossing the Rance again.

(6) Turn right onto the first road after the château. At La Ville-ès-Mallet, the road becomes a track. Follow it straight on to La Ville Agand.

(7) Just after the hamlet, take the track on the right. Follow it without going down to the bottom of the valley, veering to the left. Pass through the hamlet of Chêne au Loup.

(8) At the multi-way junction, take the road furthest to the right to head down towards Guévon. Before the bridge over the Rance, take the road on the left and then immediately the path that climbs to the left.

(9) At the top of this path, turn left and stay on the road towards La Bautraie.

(10) At the bend before the hamlet, take the path straight ahead. At the crossroads, cross the road and take the farm track almost opposite. At the next two crossroads, continue straight ahead to reach the Chapelle Saint-Gilles and its small pond.

(11) After the chapel, continue straight on, take the road on the right then the first path on the left. Pass the hamlet of La Tinguaie, with its stream winding its way between large boulders. Immediately afterwards, take the path on the right and you will reach a tarmac road.

(12) Turn right into the hamlet of La Coudre. Cross the road; the path directly opposite leads to the La Coudre menhir.

(13) Then retrace your steps and cross the road again.

(12) Continue straight on along the small road which leads back to the Moulin de Cadeuc (S/E).

This route is quite pleasant. However, there are no signposts, so watch out if you’ve forgotten your map!

The route runs from point 1 to point 5, returning via the PR path at the castle entrance.
Easy and pleasant.
The downside is that there is no car park at the starting point. We parked between point 12 and the start at the only available space.

Some truly stunning views.
The Chaos de Quémelin is a lovely find; the menhirs are imposing.
On the other hand, a bit too much tarmac for our liking.

Enjoy a lovely walk around Langourla, away from the crowds on the coast as lockdown restrictions ease
