Melide - O Pino

The seventy-fourth stage of the Camino de Santiago. This stage is long but easy, on a road in very good condition, with dirt and stone paths, as well as small roads or tarmac tracks between villages, featuring gentle ascents and descents interspersed with flat sections. You arrive in A Rúa, at the Peregrino O Castiñeiro campsite, to recharge your batteries and prepare for the final stage.

Description of the walk

(S) Depending on your campsite, join the signposted path and continue westwards along a leafy path dotted with houses and gardens. After passing through the small hamlet of O Carballal, walk past a power station before reaching a fork in the path, situated near a shed with two numbered silos.

(1) Carry on straight ahead (north-west) towards the woods. Continue to the Catasol River Bridge: a granite-stone crossing over the small Catasol River.

(2) After crossing the river, continue through the woods until you reach the hamlet of O Barriro de Abaixio, near a farm.

(3) Turn right to reach the N-547, then head left to follow this road for about a hundred metres until you reach the milestone.

(4) Head left (south-west). Ignore the cross-country paths, keep going straight on and pass the Taberna de Parabispo, before arriving at a boundary stone on a left-hand bend.

(5) Continue straight on (west) along the small path through the woods to reach the Parroquia de Boente picnic area.

(6) Continue on your way to the hamlet of A Peroxa, where you will arrive at the El Aleman hostel and café.

(7) Turn left after this hostel, staying on the main path, and join the N-547 in the village of Boente de Abaixo at a fountain. Turn left (west) and continue to the Church of Santiago de Boente.

(8) Cross the N-547 carefully and continue along the small cobbled street that leads you out of the hamlet and into the woods. Continue westwards and, ignoring the junction, carry on to the tunnel that takes you under the N-547.

(9) Carry on, pass a rest area and, after an S-bend, you’ll find yourself near the N-547.

(10) Stay on the gently ascending path that runs alongside the road on your right. At the bridge, continue north to reach the village of A Castaneda. Carry on to the Albergue Santiago.

(11) Turn left, following the signs for Rio. At the fork, continue straight on (west) along the small tarmac road which takes you through farmland. Pass through the hamlet of O Pedido and, staying on this road, continue to the hamlet of O Rio and walk on to a picnic area.

(12) Turn left at the fork and walk to the Stop sign. Continue straight ahead to reach, after a sharp right-hand bend, the crossroads on the edge of a small wood.

(13) Turn right and continue to the footbridge crossing the N-547.

(14) Continue through the woods towards the west. At the crossroads, head straight ahead across a paved path and continue along the tarmac road, which slopes gently downwards, to the medieval Ribadiso Bridge spanning the Rio Iso, at the entrance to the hamlet of the same name.

(15) Walk through the hamlet and continue to the Stop sign.

(16) Turn left, follow the N-547 before passing under the road through a tunnel, then turn left onto the path running parallel to the main road, and continue for a few metres until you reach a crossroads.

(17) Turn right, pass the Albergue Milpés and then a upholstery business, before joining the N-547 at a Stop sign.

(18) On the small path heading south-west, follow the main road until you reach the town of Arzúa at a Renault garage.

(19) Cross the town, staying on the N-547 which continues as Rúa Lugo, keeping to the left-hand pavement: refreshments available at the supermarket. Continue to the Xulgado de Primeira Instancia e Instrución Único police court.

(20) At the crossroads, head straight ahead onto the small Rúa Cima do Lugar, slightly to the left. Continue along this small, slightly downhill cobbled street until you reach the little Chapel of Madalena.

(21) At the junction, continue straight ahead along Rúa do Carme, pass the Church of Santiago de Arzúa and continue to the crossroads. Cross the junction carefully and continue straight ahead to the cross in front of a school.

(22) Pass to the left of the cross to go down a small alleyway of flat stones, which leads into a stony path that takes you out of the town through green countryside. Pass a small fountain before reaching a fork in the road, in the hamlet of As Barrosas.

(23) Continue left to cross the woods. Ignore the path cutting across and head left at the T-junction before reaching the hamlet of Pregontoño.

(24) Walk through this hamlet and past the Pregontoño café/bar. At the crossroads, head straight on (north-west) to reach the tunnel that passes under the N-547.

(25) Turn left, then right after the tunnel to continue through the farmland, ignoring the side paths. Carry on to the hamlet of A Peroxa.

(26) After passing through this small hamlet, head into the woods, heading north-west, and continue to the crossroads.

(27) Head left (west) into the woods and, still ignoring the side paths, you’ll arrive at Taberna Vella in the hamlet of As Quintas.

(28) Continue straight on and cross over the A-54 motorway before reaching the village of A Calzada.

(29) Walk through the village, heading south-west. At the stop sign, continue straight ahead, pass the Albergue Casa Calzada and carry on until you reach Bar Lino, at the entrance to the village of Lengüelle.

(30) Pass to the left of the bar, then walk through the village. At the fork, turn right to continue along the cobbled lane. When the lane becomes tarmac again, carry on straight ahead until you reach the next fork.

(31) Head left, pass the Casa A Calle guesthouse, then turn right after it. Cross a small stream, then at the junction, first turn left then right to continue for about 100 metres along the path to the left of a garage, before turning left to head west. At the fork, turn right (north-west) and continue to the picnic area.

(32) Continue north-west until you reach the Stop sign in the hamlet of Boavista.

(33) First turn left then right onto the tree-lined path to arrive in front of Fontelos Castle (large palm trees in the garden)

(34) Continue westwards, ignoring the crossroads, and carry on to the hamlet of O Castro. Proceed to the junction.

(35) First turn right then left and carry on to join the N-547.

(36) Turn right, pass through the village of Salceda, staying on this road, and continue to the bus shelter opposite the Casa Tia Teresa Hotel Restaurant

(37) Turn right onto the path, pass a stone monument, then rejoin the N-547 at a tractor dealership.

(38) Cross this road carefully and follow the small path to the right that leads into the woods. Continue south-west, ignoring the side paths, until you reach the tunnel that passes under the N-547, in the hamlet of As Ras.

(39) Go through the tunnel and continue until you reach a junction opposite a grain dryer, in the hamlet of A Brea.

(40) Turn left, then right at the boundary marker, to continue along the tarmac road, which slopes gently downwards. Carry on to the junction by a large farm.

(41) Turn left, then right at the Stop sign, onto the N-547. Stay on this road until you reach the blue sign indicating the direction of Santiago and Lugo.

(42) Cross this road carefully and continue straight ahead on the path running alongside the N547, heading south-west. Pass a picnic area and continue to the O Ceadoiro Restaurant.

(43) Cross the N540 again, taking care, and pass to the left of the O Empalme Restaurant, heading north. At the T-junction, turn left to go down a path that joins the N-547. Follow this road to the picnic area.

(44) Continue westwards before leaving the N-547 at a left-hand bend, taking a path that leads into the woods. Continue until you reach the tunnel that passes under the N-547.

(45) Continue south-west, pass through a small hamlet and carry on to the fork at the entrance to the hamlet of A Rúa, near a fountain.

(46) Carry on straight ahead through the hamlet and continue to the entrance of the Peregrino O Castiñeiro campsite, where you will find your campsite for the night (E).
