Ventas de Narón - Melide

The seventy-third stage of the Camino de Santiago. On this downhill stage, you continue through Galicia, a beautiful green region whose landscape is reminiscent of the Aubrac. Indeed, the region’s paths are lined with low stone walls. The region is beautiful but poor. The housing is dilapidated and the elderly people you meet live with their feet in cow dung.

Description of the walk

(S) From the edge of the village of Ventas de Narón, head north-west along the small tarmac road through woods and scrubland. Pass an old property before reaching the hamlet of A Previsa, opposite Bar Trisquel: breakfast available here.

(1) Continue westwards, passing to the left of the hamlet of Os Lameiros De Abeixo, followed by a picnic area with a memorial stone, before reaching the village of Ligonde.

(2) Walk through the village, staying on the main street, and continue to the La Fuente del Peregrino hostel: picnic area and food available.

(3) Turn right in front of the building, then continue north and then north-west until you reach the marker opposite a hostel, where you turn left onto a slightly downhill stony path. Once you’re back on the tarmac road, head left and continue to the village of Airexe, past a cross.

(4) Walk through the village staying on the main street and turn left until you reach the fork: there is a fountain and a picnic area at the fork. Continue left and walk through cultivated fields and woods until you reach the Stop sign at the junction with the LU-P-3301.

(5) Cross this road carefully and continue straight ahead towards Lestedo on the left-hand lane. Walk on to the small hamlet of Portos, in front of the A paso de formiga hostel.

(6) Leave this hamlet quickly to reach the village of Lestedo. Continue to the fork in the road and the wash house.

(7) Turn right to cross this leafy village, pass the Church of Santiago de Lestedo and its unusual cemetery, then leave the village behind as you continue north-eastwards and then south-eastwards after a 90° bend. Continue to the hamlet of Os Valos. At the first fork, go straight on to reach a second fork with a white house in the middle.

(8) Turn left to cross through and leave this hamlet, continuing along a pleasant, leafy little road until you reach the junction with the Vilaxoan road, at the small hamlet of A Mamurria.

(9) Keep heading north-west and continue to the hamlet of A Brea, where you’ll come to a fork in the road, in front of a hostel.

(10) Turn left at the hostel and continue along the grassy path running through the fields. Pass a rest area before reaching a crossroads. First turn right then left and continue past the hamlet of Abenostre, then head west through the woods before joining the N-547.

(11) Follow this road, keeping to the left, until you reach the hamlet of Rosario, arriving just before a bus shelter.

(12) Turn left and continue along the small path with flat stones. Pass a farm before entering the woods and carry on to the rest area before reaching the outskirts of the town of Palas de Rei at the Albergue Os Chacotes

(13) Continue straight ahead, walk past the football stadium and follow the signs for Clinica Podologica opposite. Continue along this leafy street until you reach the junction in the town of Palas de Rei.

(14) Turn right and continue along Rúa Cruceiro, which runs to the right of a three-storey building. At the fork, take the narrow street on the left and continue to the Church of San Tirso de Palas de Rei.

(15) In the church square, take the steps and continue down the small sloping street. Cross carefully at the pedestrian crossing, then, after a right/left turn, go down a few steps to continue along Rua da Ingrexa. Refreshments available. You will arrive in front of Palas de Rei Town Hall.

(16) Cross Avenida de Compostela, head straight ahead into Rua Peregrino and continue to the statue in the middle of a flowerbed. Cross Avenida de Compostela again with care. Walk a few metres to the right before turning left onto the small path of flat stones. Follow this lane down through cultivated gardens before reaching Avenida de Compostela once more.

(17) Cross this avenue carefully and continue along the path opposite which, after a sharp left-hand bend, brings you to Los Pelegrinos Danzantes: a statue depicting two dancing pilgrims. Continue along the path which takes you back along Avenida de Compostela.

(18) Turn right and stay on the pavement until you reach a pink building situated at the start of a left-hand bend.

(19) Turn right towards Curuxas, pass through the hamlet before returning to Avenida de Compostela. Walk a few hundred metres before turning right onto a stony path towards Carballal. Continue until you pass through the hamlet of Carballal and walk on to the fork.

(20) Head south, cross the N-547 carefully and turn right (west) onto the footpath behind the safety barrier; after about a hundred metres, leave the N-547 and follow a tarmac road. Continue to the crossroads.

(21) Continue north-west, then go under a bridge before reaching the village of San Xiao Do Camino.

(22) Walk through the village and continue to the cross, then turn left. Pass a grain dryer, then San Julian Church followed by the cemetery, before leaving the village at a sculptor’s workshop.

(23) Continue north-west to reach a fork at the entrance to the hamlet of Ponte Campana.

(24) Carry on straight ahead (north-west), cross a small bridge over the Rio Pambre, then continue straight along the flat stone path. Carry on to the hamlet of Casanova, where you’ll arrive in front of the Terraza Casanova café.

(25) Walk through the hamlet, then, at the boundary marker, turn right and continue to the fork.

(26) Turn left onto the path that leads into the woods. As you emerge from the woods, you will be under a high-voltage power line.

(27) Continue north-west. At the crossroads, carry on straight ahead north-west to reach the Rego Do Vilar stream.

(28) Continue on to the hamlet of Campanilla until you reach the café-bar of the same name: refreshments available here. Carry on to the junction with the LU-P-40001.

(29) Continue straight on along this tarmac, shaded road, passing a scrapyard before reaching a Stop sign in the hamlet of Coto.

(30) Turn left past a café-bar, then turn left at the signpost and the no-entry sign to continue along a path through the woods. Carry on until you reach the cross at the entrance to the village of Leboreiro.

(31) Walk through the village. Do take a moment to visit the village church and its surroundings. Leave the village and head north-west to reach the Magdalena Bridge, which spans the Rio Seco

(32) Continue until you reach the vicinity of the N-547 near some houses.

(33) Walk a few metres along this road on your right, turn left then right and continue until you reach a path running parallel to the N-547 which enters an industrial estate. Stay on this path until you reach a junction, near the Paula furniture factory on the other side of the N-547.

(34) Turn left and head north-west through the woods. At the fork, keep going in this direction until you reach the marker at the start of a left-hand bend.

(35) Leave the tarmac road and head right into the woods. At the crossroads, turn left then right to reach the San Juan de Ferelos Bridge, which spans the River Furelos.

(36) After the bridge, head left towards Mélide and enter the village of Furelos via the flat stone-paved lane. Walk past the Church of San Xoán de Furelos. At the fork, go to the right of the taxi company and continue westwards then north-westwards. Walk along meadows where a few horses graze peacefully, to reach the town of Melide at the junction with Rúa Furelos.

(37) Continue straight on until the Stop sign. Cross carefully and carry on straight ahead along the cobbled street. Follow Rúa Camiño Vello de Santiago to the junction with Avenida de Lugo (N-547.

(38) Turn left: refreshments available from here. Pass the San Roque Chapel and continue to the roundabout at the end of San Roque Park.

(39) Turn right towards Toques and then, a few metres further on, opposite the Froiz supermarket, turn left onto Rúa San Pedro. Please note: the signposting here also suggests going straight on – do not follow this direction! Continue along Rúa San Pedro, which joins Rúa Principal, to leave the town, passing the municipal cemetery before reaching the junction with the N-547.

(40) Cross this road carefully, then turn right and left, continuing towards Igrexa de Santa Maria on Estrada de Visantoña. Carry on until you reach the Pilmar Parrillada restaurant.

(41) Turn right opposite the restaurant, pass the Church of Santa María de Melide and continue to the wash house (E) to find a secluded spot for the camp.

Worth a visit

Town of Melide (37)
One of the attractions in Melide, right at the entrance to the village, is the medieval Furelos Bridge (36). As a result, Melide’s location at the heart of the Santiago route explains the abundance of monuments, particularly Romanesque ones such as the Church of San Juan.
Convent Square
This is Melide’s main square, where the routes to Oviedo and Santiago de Compostela meet. Here you’ll find the Terra Museum (a former pilgrims’ hospital), the 17th-century Obra Pia de Santo Anton, the town hall and an old palace. The Convent of the Holy Spirit dominates the square; dating from the 14th to the 18th centuries, it houses a Baroque altar, Romanesque ruins, Gothic coffins, 16th-century murals and an ivory statue of the Infant Jesus. The Convent of the Holy Spirit is one of the town’s heritage treasures, and the masses are deeply moving, with the hymns and prayers accompanied by music.
