Lucerne - Fräkmüntegg - Pilatus via the Alpenpanorama Weg

Mount Pilatus, which towers over Lake Lucerne and Lucerne, quickly comes into view on the Alpenpenpanorama Weg trail. It is clearly visible from the heights as soon as you leave Lucerne. This summit is well worth a detour. You will have unforgettable memories of the panorama of the Alps and the Jura in the evening, when you can enjoy the absolute calm and a magnificent sunset over the Bernese Alps.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: From Lucerne to Schwarzsee via the Alpenpanorama Weg

Description of the walk

For ease of description, the following symbols are used (see Practical information):
R sign: Yellow sign with hiker pictogram
W sign: Sign or diamond with the annotation Wanderweg
Sign No. 3: Yellow multi-directional sign with green sticker No. 3

The starting point for this stage is on Weinmark square, next to the Altstadt Krone hotel in Lucerne's historic city centre.

(S) Head south and take the small street that joins Kramgasse. Cross the bridge over the Reuss and join Bahnhofstrasse. Head south-west, cross Hirschegraben Strasse and follow Klosterstrasse, which ends at a bridge over the railway line. Turn south onto Bruschmattstrasse, then Berglistrasse until you reach the start of a path on the right.

(1) Turn right, following the sign for Panneau W, and you will soon reach a sign marked No. 3.

(2) Continue climbing on trail No. 3, which gains a little altitude through the woods. You will come out in a residential area at Steinhofhalde Strasse (elevation 540 and sign No. 3).

(3) Leave trail No. 3, which heads north-west. Head south-west and take Steinhofhalde Strasse. At the crossroads, keep heading south-west towards Kriens. Continue to the end of Dattenbergstrasse.

(4) Go down the steps to Rue Amlehnhalde, turn right and then leave the road on the right at the bend to cross a vineyard. Follow the W signs south-west through a series of lanes, then turn left and join the track that runs alongside Bellpark. You will then rejoin Luzernerstrasse. Turn right into this street and cross at the traffic lights at the church square (St. Gallus Church is overlooking on the left).

(5) Climb the stairs leading to the square in front of the Galluskirche, go around the cemetery on the right and go to the station for the first section of the Pilatus.

(6) With your back to the station, continue along the road that winds southwards and passes under the cabins three times. At the end of the road, take the path on the left (signposted W). Continue through the woods, alternating between the path and a small road, always following the W signs. You will reach elevation 788 and a sign indicating Krienseregg, 40 minutes away.

(7) Continue along the obvious path, which passes under the cable cars several times, until you reach a crossroads at the foot of the Kienseregg station.

(8) Leave the access to the Krienseregg station on your left and descend towards the playgrounds. At the first crossroads, take the path furthest to the left and you will quickly reach a viewpoint and picnic tables.

(9) Head south-east, staying below the ridge on an almost flat path until you cross a small road and see a sign for Fräkmüntegg 1h10 min.

(10) Keep an eye out for the yellow diamonds and signs for Fräkmüntegg. Turn right at the Schwandhütte. The trail becomes less comfortable, with numerous tree roots slowing your progress. Follow the ridge south-east to Bielilücke (1372 m) and then reach a small pass with a picnic table.

(11) After a short but steep descent, head towards the access road to the Fräkmüntegg station (E).

Take the cable car to Mount Pilatus to reach the Pilatus Kulm hotel, where you will spend the night.

Notes

In principle, the Alpenpanoramaweg No. 3 from Lucerne heads towards Malters for a 12 km route.

To enjoy an unforgettable view of the Bernese Alps and Lake Lucerne, this short stage is best divided into two:

  • From Lucerne to Fräkmüntegg - then cable car to Mount Pilatus. (Overnight stay at the summit).
  • Mount Pilatus - Fräkmüntegg (cable car) then descent to join the Alpenpanoramaweg No. 3 to Malters.

This detour to Mount Pilatus is only worthwhile in good weather.
If this is not the case, it is advisable to complete the stage from Lucerne to Malters (approximately 12 km, with 500 m of elevation gain and loss). With the numerous signposts marked No. 3, the route is easy to follow.

  • Green sticker No. 3 Alpenpanorama Weg
  • Yellow: Alpine Panorama Trail sticker No. 3. Excellent signposting with numerous signs along the entire route.
  • Mountain equipment, including good hiking boots, warm clothing and sun protection.
  • Several restaurants along the route.
  • Accommodation in Lucerne: Hotel Altstadt Krone
  • Accommodation Pilatus: Hotel Pilatus Kulm
  • There are a few drinking fountains along the route, but the water is not always drinkable.
  • Transport: Timetable
  • Mount Pilatus Fräkmüntegg - Pilatus cable car: CHF 16 (May 2022)
  • Weather: before setting off, check the Swiss weather forecast or Météoblue
  • Alpine pastures: You will cross many alpine pastures, where farmers are very cooperative with hikers. Please stay on the paths that cross their property. Don't forget to close any gates behind you.

Worth a visit

  • Lucerne.
  • Lake Lucerne.
  • Mount Pilatus.
  • The Bernese Alps, including the Mönch, Eiger and Jungfrau.
