The Loire and vineyards between Rochefort sur Loire, Behuard and Savennières

This is a very varied walk that will take you close to the racecourse (even better on a race day), through the hamlet of Les Lombardières with its old fishermen's and sailors' houses, then through the charming village of Savennières and its vineyards perched on the hillsides, and finally to Béhuard, a very pretty little village with its small church clinging to the rock.
Some sections are the same on the way there and back, but this is necessary due to the river crossings and the railway line.

Description of the walk

(S/E) The walk starts from the public car park between the racecourse and the bridge over the Louet.
Staying on the various car parks, head south towards the Louet and turn left onto the wide path that runs alongside the swimming pool and is marked in red and white (GR® 35).
Follow this path, which passes close to the bend in the racecourse, until you reach a T-junction.

(1) At the T-junction, turn right and follow this path to the hamlet of Les Lombardières.

(2) When you reach the hamlet, turn left and walk down to the banks of the Loire, admiring the various buildings as you go. Leave the hamlet by following theGR® markings along the Route des Lombardières, then turn right onto the Route de Port Godard until you reach a fork in the road.

(3) Leave the return path and continue straight on this road until you reach the D106.

(4) Turn right to cross the iron bridge over the Loire and enjoy the view of the river.

(5) Continue over the bridge on the Guillemette branch.

(6) Go through the underpass that crosses the railway line. Continue straight ahead to climb towards the centre of the village of Savennières via Rue de la Motte.

(7) At the church, take Rue du Boys d'Angers on the left for about 80 metres, then turn right into Rue Monsallier until you see Rue du Clos Lavau.

(8) Just after this street, turn right onto a small street that continues onto a wide path, still on the GR®. After about 300 metres, the path climbs quite steeply to reach the hillsides. At the top, follow the path to the right to pass near the Moulin du Gué. Continue through the vineyards along the path, which is then lined with trees and eventually descends into the forest.

(9) Shortly after entering the forest, before going uphill, turn right onto a narrower path.
Follow this small path until you reach the D111. Continue to the right on the D111 for about 100 metres.

(10) Then turn left onto Chemin de la Monnaie, still marked in red and white.
Continue along this path until you reach a passage under the railway line on the right. Then turn right to follow the railway line, which will be on your right.
Continue along the railway line for about 1.5 km until you reach Savennières station.

(6) Go down into the underpass you took on the way there and turn left onto the D106 to return in the opposite direction.

(5) At the end of the bridge over the Guillemette, go down the stairs on the right. Be careful, as they are quite steep. Once at the bottom, turn right, then right again to pass under the bridge.

(11) Continue along the road with the Guillemette on your left. Walk to the Church of Béhuard, passing the car park and then the very pretty Rue fleurie du Chevalier Buhard.
At the church, turn right and walk alongside the open-air oratory to the Loire.

(12) There, turn right to walk along the Loire for about 150 metres, then turn right again to return to the car park.
Finally, back on Rue du Chevalier Buhard, turn left to head back to the bridge.

(11) Just before the bridge, turn left to go up the road and take the D106 towards Rochefort until you cross the iron bridge over the Loire.

(4) Turn left towards Les Lombardières until you reach the fork you passed on the way there.

(3) Turn right onto the first wide, tree-lined path. Follow this path to the T-junction you passed on the way there.

(1) Turn right and follow the path you took on the way there in the opposite direction, passing by the racecourse again and returning to the starting point (S/E).

A very pleasant walk, punctuated by snacking on blackberries, sloes and wild grapes from the hedges, much to the delight of the children!
A peaceful stroll, almost timeless as we hardly met anyone, perfect just a few days before the start of the new school year!

A varied and interesting hike. Information boards explaining the vine cycle are dotted along the section that runs alongside the vineyards.
And the village of Behuard is definitely worth the detour.

A beautiful hike, Savennières is an interesting village to walk through.
Béhuard is a delight to walk around. We left the village by taking the path that runs alongside the Loire rather than the road. This path is very pleasant, with views of the Loire, the sandbanks and seven majestic swans.

We extended the hike by passing through Epiré and Pierre Bécherelle,
and had a picnic opposite Béhuard at the port of Savennieres on the banks of the
Guillemette, with a spring-like atmosphere!
An easy and pleasant walk.

An easy hike, which I extended after point 10 to climb up to the viewpoint at Clos du Château, then a complete tour of Béhuart (the village is the nicest part; the complete tour would be better done by bike) and finally a short trip to Rochefort to make it exactly 20 km . Worth doing again in summer to enjoy a different side of the Loire... A lovely outing.

A very pleasant hike, the village of Behuard is worth a detour and the signposting is very clear.

Hello
I am the author of this hike. I am delighted that you enjoyed it.
If you have the opportunity, I invite you to take a tour of the island of Béhuard, starting from the car park. It is a bucolic walk, to be done outside of flood season, of course.

A lovely walk. We had a picnic on the island of Béhuard. A beautiful spot. Depending on the level of the Loire, we were able to add a small part of the island to our walk. A drink at the bar in Rochefort and we've completed a circular walk.
