The remains of the Nîmes aqueduct

A circular loop through the heath that will take you to three sites where you can see the remains of the 19th-century Nîmes aqueduct. A project abandoned just a few months after work began, this aqueduct more or less follows the route of the Roman Pont du Gard aqueduct.
During part of the walk, you’ll also enjoy a magnificent view of the plain, Mont Ventoux and the Aramon chimney.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park opposite the motorway exit.

(S/E) Walk carefully along the A-road until you find a small path on the right. Follow it and you will immediately reach a junction.

(1) Take the dirt track on the left. You will then walk alongside the aqueduct on your right for about 200 m.

(2) When you reach the tarmac road, first turn right then left onto a dirt track and walk for about 100 m. At the crossroads, turn right and start the climb towards Le Devès.

(3) Turn right at the junction, then take the path down to the left. Be careful, the slope is quite steep! At the bottom, take the DFCI on the right until you reach the aqueduct path.

(4) Continue straight ahead, then turn right to reach further remains of the aqueduct.

(5) Turn back.

(4) Head up the Chemin de l'Aqueduc on the right until you reach the end.

(6) At the last house, take the small dirt track on the right and head down to thePR® marked path. Turn right until you reach the tarmac road. 190 m further on, in the ditch on the left, another section of the aqueduct is visible. You can also clearly see its route on the other side of the road.

Continue and follow the motorway for about a hundred metres, then take the small road on the right and continue for about 1 km, staying on this road until you reach the roundabout.

(7) Turn right up Chemin de l'Aqueduc and continue straight on for about 1 km.

(1) Turn left, then left again to return to the car park (S/E).

This hike is quite surprising. Starting from the car park, you quickly leave the noise of the road behind, and the elevation gain is nice. I would just recommend returning to point 5 on the way back instead of going to 7, resuming the route in the opposite direction after point 5, climbing back up into the heath and, once at the top, turning left and then immediately right to cut towards 1, which makes for a nice hike. Otherwise, I didn't see any remains of the aqueduct.

The main thing is to walk, so I have no regrets, but the name of the hike is a bit "pompous" because the remains of the aqueduct are difficult to see and disappointing, and the last 2 kilometres are in an industrial area and end in the middle of carved stone blocks that you have to climb over and... which are clearly there to block the way.

A practical walk for dog owners who live in the area, except for the end where you have to walk on the road.
I didn't see any remains... point 5 is not accessible. The start of the walk is above a very dirty car park.
You can hear cars on the motorway throughout the walk. Apart from that, there are no difficulties.

The first part of the walk is very pleasant and offers a lovely view. However, the last 2 km of the return journey are along a tarmac road close to the motorway. That said, this is what makes it possible to complete a circular route and return to the car, which is a significant advantage.

A lovely stroll rather than a proper hike… If you’re short on time, it’s a nice spot despite the noise from the nearby motorway.
There are indeed a few remains of the aqueduct, which I don’t think are showcased enough.
Easy parking in the carpool car park at the roundabout at the A9 Nîmes Est exit.

Close to the car park opposite the motorway exit, so easily accessible for everyone. The start of the walk is quite overgrown and we couldn’t spot the first ruins... The first section is pleasant, with lovely views. The second section is uninteresting, along a road and right in the middle of an industrial estate... We couldn’t find the third set of ruins either, and it wasn’t for lack of trying... Another positive point is that we didn’t come across anyone for an hour and a half.
However, it’s more interesting to head further towards Poulx; the walks there are much more beautiful.

A lovely walk, starting from the carpool car park at the Nîmes East motorway exit. Suitable for everyone, well-marked route; the first 4 km are pleasant with lovely views, the 5th km isn’t great (tarmac and an industrial estate), and the final few kilometres are fine.
