The Three Valleys - From Aizac to Saint-Julien-du-Serre

This second stage of the Three Valleys circular walk takes you to Saint-Julien-du-Serre, the starting point of the previous day’s walk, via a different route.
Following the ridge for the first part, you will once again descend into the coolness of the three valleys. You’ll pass through the magnificent hamlet of Thieurre, perched on its rocky outcrop offering breathtaking views of the Lower Ardèche, the Volane Valley and the Besorgues Valley.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: The three valleys: Volane, Sandron and Oize

Description of the walk

(S) From the Col d'Aizac, take the small road heading south. 200 m further on, turn left onto the forest track climbing through the chestnut trees and follow it for several kilometres... all in the shade.

(1) Leave the track that descends to the left and continue along the main track following the contour line. After a few hairpin bends downhill, at a bend, take the path that climbs to the left through the chestnut trees (marker on a tree). Descend back to Chadenet.

(2) On leaving the hamlet, follow the path that branches off to the left after the last house; it overlooks a small road which you will reach further on. Once on the tarmac, continue south.

(3) At the Croix du Coulet, continue straight on towards Thieure to the south-east. This hamlet sits on a rocky outcrop, overlooking the Aubenas plain to the south, the Volane valley to the east, and the Besorgues valley to the west.

(4) Continue south-east towards the mast. After the last houses, take the very steep path on the left, which winds steeply downwards.

(5) At the bottom (hiking signpost), turn left towards “Pont de Bridou”. Follow the Volane on the right bank to the bridge.

(6) Cross the Pont de Bridou over the Volane (watch out for traffic). As soon as you’ve crossed the bridge, head up the path on the left. A steady climb, winding its way up to the hamlet of Montagnac. Turn right onto the small road leading to the Col de Montagnac.

(7) At the pass, you are straddling the Volane Valley and the Sandron Valley to the east. Continue south-east (straight on) along this well-marked route, and walk downhill through the hamlets of Régenge and Le Mas.

(8) Just before the hamlet of Serrette, at a junction of several small roads, turn left onto the track (signposted “Saint-Andéol-de-Vals”) to reach a small engineering structure in the middle of the meadows: the Pont de Sandre (in an exceptional setting).

(9) Cross the bridge and take care! Briefly leave the signposted route (which continues to the left) by turning right just after the bridge to reach Bourlenc. As you continue uphill, the path turns into a track, eventually joining the D218 county road. Follow this road to the right for 300m.

(10) At the four-way junction, rejoin the signposted route. Follow the small road on the left towards Boudon and, immediately, take a (very pleasant) path on the left, which descends towards the Oize valley.

(11) At the bottom, turn right onto the track. After about 500m, take the track on the left leading to the Moulin des Prés, the only building in this little valley (a haven of peace... a little paradise).

(12) Cross the bridge over the Oize and follow the path up the opposite slope. Follow the winding path up to a small road. Follow this to the right to the hamlet of Marconnave.

(13) As you leave the hamlet, at the last house, don’t miss the small path leading down to the right.

(14) After a lovely descent, turn left and follow a small road heading due south. Take another path on the right, which crosses the D 256 several times. Join this road just before a bridge, and continue along it through the hamlet of Passe-L'Aïgue.

(15) At the Fork in the road, take the road on the right which climbs back up to Saint-Julien-du-Serre (E).

Hello,
point no. 9 from Aizac to St Julien, km 13.17: do not turn right to take the shortcut to the road, but follow the route around as indicated by the signposts. The track is closed, with several no-entry signs, a dead-end sign and a fence. It seems the owners aren’t too keen on seeing hikers... It’s impossible to ignore the warnings...
