The three medieval bridges and the pools of the Barbaira tributary.

A change of scenery guaranteed. This lesser-known tributary of the Rio Barbaira features three medieval stone bridges and pools of green water. It promises a secluded spot and guaranteed swimming. Perhaps a fine reason to take this walk.

On the way back, the village of Roccheta Nervina reveals a completely unspoilt site with narrow alleyways. It’s like stepping back fifty years in time.

Description of the walk

Coming from Dolceacqua, park at the entrance to the village.

(S/E) Continue through the shopping area then take Via Rimembranze on the right to reach the medieval bridge at Roccheta Nervina. From there, continue along Via Roma. Follow this narrow street until the second set of junctions.

(1) Turn left onto Via Santa Lucia. Starting as a narrow street, it turns into a path known as the Anello Roccheta Nervina after leaving the built-up area. The path runs alongside terraced fields and gardens. Cross the road twice.

(2) At the Chapel of Santa Lucia, continue straight on until you reach the stone bridge.

(3) Cross the medieval bridge and continue along this path on the left bank until you reach the medieval bridge, which you will need to walk alongside. Continue to the third bridge.

(4) This is a small medieval bridge in a wooded area. Turn around and head back to the village.

(1) Turn left onto Via Roma. Continue along Via Umberti I to the right, then Via Rocca to the left and finally Via Sotto Torre to the right, which leads back to the exit of Roccheta Nervina.

(5) Cross the road bridge. The steps opposite the bridge lead back to the shopping area, or head to the nearby car park on the left (S/E).
