The Balcons du Suzon are easy to access from the Maison Forestière du Roy Jeannot.

For an almost complete tour of the Suzon balconies, on the right bank, starting from the Maison Forestière du Roy Jeannot. An easy, not very long route with little elevation gain, allowing you to admire the most beautiful panoramas of this part of the Val Suzon.

Description of the walk

Start at the Roy Jeannot Forest House, with a small car park just opposite.

(S/E) Leave the forest house on your right and take the path towards the forest. At thefirst fork, go left and pass the hunting cabin on your left. Continue through the forest, turning right at thefirst fork, then left at thesecond, until you reach a five-pointed star-shaped crossroads.

(1) A good path comes from Étaules on the left. Take it opposite on the dirt track. Descend a little to join the yellow-marked Bouton d'Or trail.

(2) Follow it to the right. Stay at roughly the same level until the yellow-marked trail descends towards the river on the left.

(3) Leave it and continue to the right towards the top of the plateau to reach the coast at La Ratte.

(4) Stay on the edge of the plateau by taking an extremely stony path on the right. Follow it without ever going down into the valley and, after a 90° turn, reach the balcony above the Chouerre rocks.

(5) There is another one just after, be careful of the 10 to 20 m precipice! Go back up to the main path and continue along the edge of the combe at Préau, there are fewer stones on this section. Continue along this path with slight inclines and a sharp left turn, staying on the plateau. After a left turn, you will reach a magnificent balcony above the Préau valley.

(6) Enjoy the view of the Sainte-Foy balcony opposite (antenna) and the Saussy water tower further away. Continue along the plateau for about 500 metres until you reach a multiple crossroads (IGN elevation 497).

(7) Turn left, heading north, ignoring all the paths that descend into the valleys. After a right-angle bend, you will reach another viewpoint, indicated by a sign. This is the pretty Roche Tire Barbe balcony, from which you can see the Suzon and the oppidum of Roche Château on the far right opposite.

(8) Retrace your steps and continue along this path with slightly faded blue markings. After a few bends, go and see thefirst balcony overlooking the Combe de Jouvence.

(9) Admire the landscape from these imposing cliffs, then return to the path and go to the next balcony.

(10) After thissecond balcony overlooking the Combe de Jouvence, return to the main path until you reach an intersection with the GR®7.

(11) Leave the GR®7, which descends rapidly to the left into the valley, and continue to the left as well, but above the plateau in a straight line on a path for about 200 metres to reach the last balcony on Jouvence on this hike. There is a beautiful view of the cliff face already visited on the left.

(12) Then take the path along the edge of the cliff to the next left turn.

(13) Leave the edge of the plateau and take the wide dirt track on the right that crosses the forest. It climbs slightly at the beginning, then levels out towards the D104. Just before the road, take the forest clearing on the right, which forms a path parallel to the road. Follow it to the Saussois field, then walk along the D104 for about 300 m.

(14) Keep to the right and take a good white path to the Âne au Zébu farm school, then return to the starting point at the Roy Jeannot Forest House (S/E).

Notes

There are no water sources along the route, so remember to bring something to drink.

The most difficult part, a very stony path, is between (4) and (5): take care in wet weather.

The views from the balconies are magnificent, but be careful with young children as there are steep drops nearby!

Worth a visit

The balconies, viewpoints over the Suzon valley.
