Around Curtil-Saint-Seine

A lovely walk from the entrance to the Gouffre de la Combe aux Prêtres, passing through the small village of Curtil-Saint-Seine and overlooking the Val Suzon valley.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the entrance to the Gouffre de la Combe aux Prêtres in Francheville.

(S/E) Cross the road, follow it for a few dozen metres towards Francheville, then take the path leading down to the left. You will reach a crossroads.

(1) Turn left, follow the road at a distance and you will then come to a Y-junction.

(2) Take the path on the right that leads uphill and reach a gate. Leave the wide path here and turn left twice to join a hillside path. Follow this for a good distance to reach the site of the Fontaine aux Essarts with its spring, wash house and pools.

(3) Turn right to reach the Combe de la Fontaine, leave the forest and head towards the Croix Colin, then enter the village of Curtil-Saint-Seine.

(4) Take the Grande Rue on the right, continuing along the Rue de Sainte-Foix. You’ll reach a T-junction; keep left along the edge of the woods. A few metres further on, you’ll enter the Val-Suzon National Forest.

(5) Then turn right onto a steep descent into the Combe de Goa. You’ll reach a four-way junction where there’s a spring.

(6) Leave the Combe de Goa by taking a path on the right that climbs steeply and reach a flat area. Continue on to reach a beautiful viewpoint over the Val Suzon valley.

(7) Turn right at almost a 180°. At the junction with a track, take it to the left, then leave it to the right to begin a new descent and reach a Y-shaped junction.

(8) Leave the track by taking the path on the right to begin the climb up the Combe du Prêtre. Continue through the woods and, at the edge of a large field, reach a road junction.

(9) Cross it and continue along the edge of the woods and the field. Enter the woods and, via a wide circular loop to the left, reach a crossroads of paths.

(10) Turn 90° to the right, heading down towards the Creux du Soucy. Cross a track and reach the bottom of the descent.

(11) Turn left to make a return trip to Creux du Soucy.

(12) Return to the previous junction.

(11) On your return, turn 90° left, follow the path at the bottom of the valley and reach the initial junction you passed on the way out.

(1) Turn left and follow the path in the opposite direction to the outward journey to return to the car park at the Gouffre de la Combe aux Prêtres (S/E).

A very pleasant hike with some interesting sights: the Gouffre de la Combe aux Prêtres, the Fontaine aux Essarts in the village of Curtil-Saint-Seine, the source of the Combe Goa, the overlook of the Suzon Valley, and finally, the Creux de Soucy.

We were lucky enough to come across some cavers in action at the Creux de Soucy.

The route was a bit tricky after the steep climb at point 6, due to numerous fallen trees blocking the path, requiring a detour of a few dozen metres.

Picnic at point 7 with a view of the Suzon

I recommend it

This hike is intended for experienced hikers. It is very difficult as there are many trees blocking the path. We do not recommend it.

A lovely walk best enjoyed in warm weather as it is mostly shaded, as indicated. There are plenty of fallen trees littering the ground, which you’ll often need to go round. Short sections through the forest are less well marked due to the fallen trees. Follow the yellow route. Took 3 hours 45 minutes, including a short snack break.

Some sections are hard to access due to the vegetation. There are a few sections to explore at the start. Otherwise, it’s not particularly interesting, unless you’re looking to clock up the miles

A pleasant walk in hot weather, as 80% of the route is in the shade.
However, the route is poorly maintained: fallen trees and vegetation that has taken over some of the paths, which can quickly become a nightmare with a group.
But the author isn’t to blame. It’s a shame our forests are so poorly maintained.

We completed this route in about four hours, including a lunch break of around 20 minutes. We chose to park at Curtil Church (near point 4) rather than at the suggested spot.

When we did this walk, the paths were sometimes not very well maintained (tall grass and fallen trees blocking the way), which is a bit of a shame.
There are a few quite challenging climbs that make the walk interesting.
A mainly shaded route, recommended for the summer months.
