The lands and hamlets of Pierregourde Castle

A beautiful, long hike combining history and nature. Passing through numerous ancient hamlets that were under the authority of the Lord of Pierregourde, you will reach the ruins of the old seigneurial castle, perched on top of a rocky peak over 600 metres high.
A short detour to the wild summit of Serre de Girbaud offers a superb 360° panorama of the Rhône and Eyrieux valleys.

Description of the walk

Start from the small car park in Beaumazet, on the edge of the D420.

(S/E) Carefully follow the RD120 on the right (shoulders) for about 1 km.

(1) Take the small road on the right going up towards the hamlet of Taphanel. Walk past the house and continue north on the path that extends this small road. Cross the intermittent Taphanel stream, which can be rough after rain.

(2) Join a track and follow it to the right, heading north-north-west.

(3) Leave the track on the left, which leads to the Vesseaux farm, and continue on the track on the right. The properties on either side of the track are fenced in.

(4) Reach the Serre du Clos mast and head north-west towards Col de Gilhac.

(5) Cross the hamlet of Rouretord (which means "twisted oak" in the local dialect) and continue along the track heading north.

(6) When you reach the Grange mast, turn right towards Col de Gilhac. Continue along this track to the hamlet of Boussenac, cross it along the campsite, then the houses, and join the D21, the Vernoux road.

(7) Cross the road, turn left then right onto the small road (or old local road) to Sarzier, which you follow until the next junction with the D266.

(8) At the Prat mast: follow theGR®42opposite, towards Col de Gilhac. You will overlook the road on your right.

(9) At Col de Gilhac, turn right towards Pierregourde. Follow the track to the Chastan mast.

(10) Turn left at the sharp angle towards Boulon and climb up a very steep and rugged path to reach the summit of Serre de Girbaud.

(11) Descend via the same route.

(10) Continue along the track to the left and you will find a wide path on the right that climbs up to the ruined castle of Pierregourde (safety signs).

(12) Descend to the track at the Pierregourde castle mast.

(13) Descend opposite in a southerly direction and reach the Pierregourde mast.

(14) Leave theGR®42and take the track on the right towards Beaumazet car park. Pass between the farm buildings.

(15) Reach the junction with the path leading to the Sablière farm, leave the track and descend to the right along a narrow, very rugged path which you must not leave (be careful of false starts to dead-end paths).

(16) When you reach the Boinier mast, take the narrow path on the left that runs alongside the Crotte stream gorges, before joining a track that descends to Bégouier.

(17) Reach the junction with theGR®42. Turn right towards Beaumazet, follow the small road that joins the D120, then turn right to reach the car park, the starting point (S/E).

There are several variations of this route.
Faster access, varying distances and different elevation changes, depending on your choice and preference.

Worth a visit

Take care when visiting the ruins of Pierregourde Castle: "petra gorda" in Old French means stone watchtower. This castle dates back to the 13th century.

The properties crossed are private and used for sheep farming. Dogs must be kept on a leash.

Hiking is more suitable outside of animal grazing periods.

A beautiful hike completed in 4 hours and 10 minutes. Be careful on the steep slope between 1 and 2 after the descent into the riverbed (no water at the moment). There is a tarmac section between 6 and 7, but I didn't encounter any vehicles. Finally, be careful on the difficult and technical descent, particularly between 13 and 14 (otherwise, continue straight on until 15). I really enjoyed it nonetheless.

Very beautiful hike, but the paved section before arriving at the castle is too long.

Hello, the signposting leaves something to be desired. There are practically no signposts left.
Many sections are paved, approximately 5 kilometres.

You will pass through varied and pleasant scenery, with lots of flowers at this time of year. The tarmac section in the middle of the route is not a busy road (we didn't see any vehicles), but rather a tarmac track. The hike is long in terms of distance, but it is easy and fairly quick because the paths are in good condition.
Nearby (about 3 km from the start of the hike, see map): A lovely spot for swimming in the Eyrieux at Pontpierre beach towards Saint Fortunat.

The entire climb is on a wide track, which is not very pleasant, especially when the sun is beating down. The arrival and return are more enjoyable.

Hello,

I did this route on 12/10/2017, in good weather, and the colours were splendid. The only downside to this hike was the section on a tarmaced local road, which was not very pleasant.
Is there another route that avoids all this tarmac?
Kind regards

We had a wonderful time. It's a shame that there's a bit of tarmac on the route, but that doesn't detract from its charm in any way. Beautiful views – thank you for this route.

A beautiful hike for the scenery and views. However, I would rate the route as average in terms of interest, as there is 1 km of tarmac road at the start and around 4 km in the middle of the route.

At least a quarter of the route is on the road. What a shame! Admittedly, there are some very beautiful views.
