The rocks of Crémaussel

Rock formations perched on the slopes, torrents of stones rushing down the ravines, enigmatic granite sculptures under the canopy of trees. The Sidobre is a place of discovery: around every bend in the path, in every clearing, and for everyone, according to their imagination.

Description of the walk

Start from the Beyriès picnic area (GR®de Pays des Hautes Terres d'Oc – Tour du Sidobre).

(S/E) With your back to the route information sign, set off along the road to the right. Leave the right-hand lane towards La Safranière. Further on, you will come to a road junction.

(1) Turn left towards La Fuzayrié along the road and, 100 m further on, take a wide forest path on the right. Cross the stream. Continue straight on to Ricard.

(2) Turn right (onto the GR®36, which runs north to south along the Tarn). The path winds through rocky terrain. Keep going until you reach Crémaussel.

(3) At Crémaussel, cross the road onto a wide track. Continue straight ahead until you reach the power line.

(4) Continue straight ahead to Lagues Hautes.

(5) At the crossroads, leave the GR®36 (and the GR®de Pays Hautes Terres d'Oc) by turning right to pass under the high-voltage power line and arrive at a fork.

(6) Take the path on the left and continue straight ahead to La Safranière.

(7) At La Safranière, take the small road opposite which leads back to the Beyriès picnic area (S/E).

The Sidobre underwent a process of erosion known as "ball erosion". A three-stage process is responsible for the current chaos of perched or trembling rocks with meaningful names (Les Trois Fromages, Le Roc de l'Oie, etc.). The first stage occurred during the cooling of the granite (secondary era): the rock was divided into blocks. Second stage, under a humid tropical climate (Tertiary period): alteration of the granite by corrosion working from top to bottom in a network of joints, leaving the blocks of sound rock intact. Birth of the granite boulders. Third stage: exposure of the boulders by erosion. The picturesque piles that result tickle the human imagination.

We did this route on a beautiful sunny day and, after a very rainy February, the path was quite muddy and sometimes a little flooded, but with good walking shoes and a pair of walking sticks, it wasn't a problem. The route was quite busy, especially near the picturesque rocks. A lovely route that we will definitely do again with the children.

A beautiful, fun route recommended by the Sidobre tourist office.
The first part has some elevation changes, allowing you to observe unusual rock formations and play with binoculars. The second part is more peaceful, winding through a pretty forest. You can stop for a drink and ice cream halfway through the route in Crémaussel.

It was certainly a beautiful hike that we completed in less than two hours, at a fast pace, without seeing anything and feeling scared!
INFESTED with horseflies... attacked and targeted all along the route by swarms of voracious insects, dozens of bites, even through our clothing, from km 0.5 to km 7! The few locals we met confirmed this year's invasion. A nightmare!
