Start: Place Stanislas, Bruyères
(S/E) Walk up Avenue du Cameroun towards Saint-Dié-des-Vosges and Épinal. Continue straight on along Rue Léopold and Rue Joffre. Keep going straight, then take Rue de la Libération where a first ant indicates you are on the right track. Turn right onto Rue du442ème RCT towards Montagne des Fourmis.
(1) You are now on Rue du442ème RCT, at the foot of Montagne des Fourmis. Take the tarmac path straight ahead. After 10 metres of tarmac, continue along the footpath. Keep climbing, taking the path on the right at the three-way junction. Continue straight on until you reach the playground.
(2) Continue on to reach the Carrefour des Quatre Chemins (picnic tables).
Alternative route: follow the sign on the right for ‘Le point du jour’ (Red Ring) and enjoy panoramic views of Bruyères and the surrounding peaks.
(3) At the Carrefour des Quatre Chemins, turn left onto the Chemin de la Paix et de la Liberté towards Les Sept Frères.
(4) On your right, you’ll see the remarkable beech tree made up of seven different trunks. About a hundred metres further on, on your right, the route leaves the road and joins the Sentier des Ducs.
(5) Walk past ‘Le Nœud de l’Amitié’ and the US Memorial dedicated to the Liberation of Bruyères by the Hawaiian troops of the100th/442nd RCT.
(6) At the forest crossroads (elevation 531), turn right towards the Basse de l’Âne, a 30-minute walk away. The forest path overlooks the Basse de l’Âne and descends gradually towards Bruyères.
(7) At the bottom, take the path on the right and head towards the foot of the Montagne des Fourmis.
(1) Then head to Place Stanislas via Rue du442ème RCT, then Rue de la Libération, Rue Joffre, Rue Léopold and finally Avenue du Cameroun (S/E).
