The Cuvier-Chatillon Rocks

The most beautiful and rocky part of the Denecourt-Colinet trail No. 5 is completed by a circular loop around the massif with views of Camp de Chailly and Rocher Canon.

Please note! The automatic calculation underestimates the twists and turns of the rocky Denecourt-Colinet trails. Allow for 19 km and 400 m of elevation gain.

Description of the walk

Carrefour de l'Épine car park, on the D607 (formerly the N7) between Fontainebleau and Chailly-en-Bière. Park in the northern part of the car park, which means heading towards Chailly.

(S/E) From the car park, head east (towards Fontainebleau) opposite the central span. At the entrance to the undergrowth, take the left branch of trail No. 5 marked in blue, heading east then north-east through the rocks (be careful not to take the Mory de Neuflieux road on the right). The path is poorly marked at the start, so follow the markings on the trees and rocks. Continue east until you come to a diagonal path (not very visible, so take care). This is the Bellevue road, which comes in from the right at a 3/4 angle.

(1) Leave the marked trail and take the Bellevue road on the left, at an angle of approximately 120°. It becomes a stone path as it climbs up the Cuvier-Chatillon rocks.

(2) At the junction with the GR®1 (red/white markings) and the TMF trail (green/white markings), continue straight ahead on the wide Route de Bellevue which climbs up to the plateau. At the crossroads at the top of the climb, follow the Route de la Vallée Creuse opposite (east-north-east). Continue straight ahead to the Carrefour du Cabinet de Monseigneur, where you will find the GR®1 and TMF trails again.

(3) Continue straight ahead for about 150 m until you reach thefirst crossroads. Then turn left onto Route du Vallon. At the next crossroads, take the Blue trail no. 12 (the right-hand branch of the marked trail) straight ahead. Follow the markings north-east to the Carrefour des Longues Vallées, where the Route Ronde passes. (Follow the Blue trail to the crossroads of the Chailly to Samois and La Femme roads.)

(4) Turn left at a 90° angle, still on the Blue Trail No. 12, which is shared with the GR®1. After about 100 m, leave the GR®1 and follow the Blue Trail to the right until you cross the Route du Laisser Courre before climbing up to the Rocher Canon.

(5) Continue on the Blue trail to cross Rocher Canon. After afirst climb up the rocks, descend the stairs to the right. Caution: follow the blue trail that branches off to the left before the end of the stairs. Wind your way through a group of rocks until you cross the Route des Monts de Faÿ in a quieter forest area, but where the markings may be hidden by ferns. Climb up the rocks again, following the blue trail, which zigzags along the ridge before cutting across the Route de la Femme on the descent. The trail ends its descent near the Route de la Femme, arriving at a large crossroads in the valley, with the Routes Turbigo, de la Femme, du Sanglier and de Chailly à Samois.

(6) Take the Route de Chailly à Samois on the right, heading west. Cross the Route du Marcassin. At the next crossroads, turn left onto the Route de Barbizon à Samois et à Brolles until you reach thefirst crossroads with the Route de la Laie, about 150 m away.

(7) Turn left onto Route de la Laie, which climbs up the hillside. At the top, at a crossroads, take thesecond road on the right, Route Tournante du Point de Vue du Camp de Chailly, which runs along the top of the hillside (descent on the right-hand side). Continue, crossing the Routes du Clocher and des Ventes Chapeliers, which come from the left, to descend into the valley on the right. At the end, leave a carriage road on the right that also descends, and take the wide horizontal path that leads to the Camp de Chailly viewpoint.

(8) After enjoying the various viewpoints, turn around on the main path. When you reach the Y-shaped fork, take the path on the right and immediately find the narrow Sentier de la Solitude (signage is disappearing) on the right, which you take towards the south-east. At an intersection, cross the Sentier du Solitaire and continue south-east on the Sentier de la Solitude to descend until you reach the GR®1 and TMF.

(9) Turn left onto these marked trails (red/white and green/white). Please note: the markings are faint on this rugged trail, so you will need to look for them regularly. Continue until you reach the Bellevue road you took earlier.

(2) Continue straight on the GR®1 to the plateau (numerous descents/ascents along the way). On the plateau, reach the crossroads with the Cuvier-Chatillon road coming from the front, where the GR® turns left towards the north (do not confuse this with the Tournante road of the same name).

(10) Leave the GR® and turn right (south-west) until you reach the Blue Trail No. 5 at the bottom of a slope, at a T-junction. Be careful! The markings are not very visible.

(11) Turn left onto the Blue trail. Follow it, crossing several paths, until you reach the wide gravel road of Luxembourg.

(12) Follow this gravel road to the left for about 200 metres, heading due east, uphill. You will reach thefirst intersection with a Blue trail, about a hundred metres before the large white cross at the Carrefour de Belle Croix, clearly visible opposite, with cars passing by (sign hanging from a tree).

(13) Make a half-turn to the right and take the blue trail on Route des Monts Saint-Pères. Follow it and cross Route Lebel. Continue to the next intersection with Route Christine.

(14) Turn right at a sharp angle onto Route Christine, which descends. Stay on the Blue trail until you cross Route du Luxembourg again.

(15) Cross Route du Luxembourg and continue on the Blue trail. Immediately cross Route Mory de Neuflieux, then turn left (west-northwest), still following the Blue trail. Keep going in this direction and follow the markings until you descend onto Route du Cuvier-Chatillon, going around the huge Rocher de la Merveille (clockwise).

(16) Do not take the Blue trail that descends to the left onto Route du Cuvier-Chatillon, but instead take the Blue trail opposite (north-west) and uphill on the other side of the Merveille. Climb the rocks towards the north and then west. Continue on the Blue trail until you reach Route Bellevue at the crossroads at the start.

(1) Leave the Blue trail by turning left. After about 50 metres, find another Blue trail and follow it to the right, Route Mory de Neuflieux. Continue in this direction until you reach the car park where you started (S/E).

Notes

There is no water on the route and it is quite steep. Bring plenty of supplies, especially if it is hot.
The marked trails are difficult to follow when the ferns are tall. A compass, even a basic one, is not superfluous.
Shortly before the point (10) on the plateau, behind a red and white cross, there is a pile of rocks that is a good place for a picnic. Afterwards, you will need to return before the cross to find the path to the right.
The indications (*) in the description refer to the chapter "During the hike or nearby".
Markings:
- Long-distance footpath (GR®), national level: White/Red.
Chemin de Grande Randonnée de Pays GRP®, often a long regional circular: generally yellow/red (white/green for the Tour de la Forêt de Fontainebleau).
Petite Randonnée (PR®) trails, generally local circular trails lasting a few hours: a single yellow, blue, green, orange, etc. mark. Note: as they are increasing in number, a PR® may have recently changed colour.
Special cases: the Denecourt-Colinet Blue Trails in Fontainebleau / 3 Pignons. In this case, "1" means Blue Trail No. 1; "1/2" means a route shared by Trails No. 1 and 2; "1-2" means a trail that connects Trails No. 1 and 2; "1-1" means a shortcut on Trail No. 1.
A compass, even a basic one, is always useful for the few "off-trail" passages.

Worth a visit

The names given to the rocks and sites date back to the foresters Denecourt and Colinet, creators of the Blue Trails, and come from mythology, well-known figures such as the painters of the forest (Barbizon School) and the need to reward the donors who financed the creation of the trails. And from the imagination of the foresters.

(13) Just after the big bend, former viewpoint of the Monts St Pères. Just before arriving on the Christine road, stele on the right of the path, on a rock, concerning a painter killed by his horse.

The walk began shortly before dawn. It was peaceful with some elevation. The path between the rocks was pleasant and added variety. There were a few tricky sections, but that added excitement to the hike. It wasn't too crowded. As always, the app was excellent, making it difficult to get lost. Keep up the good work, team!

Superb hike, but best done with a GPS as it's not easy to find the markings in the rocky labyrinths.
Many thanks for this magnificent walk.
The only slight downside was the noise from the cars, which was a bit too loud... but it didn't detract too much from the beauty of the views and trails. We had a picnic at point 8 in the sunshine, alone in the world. Really great.

Due to time constraints, we had to shorten the route. From the start: 9, 2, 10, 11, 12, 13... The route itself is not very busy. A very beautiful route, even if shortened.

A beautiful route with varied landscapes, pretty paths and a few rocky sections to stretch your legs.
Very quiet except around the Denecourt tower, but we weren't there at the weekend, just on 31 December, which was very sunny.
We followed the route using GPS on our smartphone, which worked perfectly.

Very pretty route. Not very busy during the week in autumn, but some rock faces can be very crowded with climbers at weekends. It's worth making a detour to the Piat pond in summer.

A very pretty route in autumn with the varied colours of the different tree species. However, it is not always easy to find your way in the rocky chaos and sometimes slippery terrain.

Difficult to spot at the start of the Luxembourg road: blue mark on a small shrub hidden in the ferns. Signpost too far away and invisible from the path.
Same difficulty on the Mont de Fay road.

Without GPS and with only a map, it took almost an hour longer.

Beautiful hike, varied landscape. Walk through remarkable and legendary climbing sites

Hello everyone,

We only did half the route, by choice, as we only had two hours to devote to walking this Sunday morning.
First of all, a big thank you to the person who mapped out this route. It's a lot of work, we can't emphasise that enough!
The difficulty was reasonable, with just two or three hills to test the endurance of the front thigh muscles and the arch of the back... After that, it was pure joy to walk on flat ground. We suddenly felt lighter... and we believed we could do it!!!
One piece of advice, which applies to all other routes: take an IGN 1:25,000 map of the area with you, just in case... mistakes, oversights and misinterpretations are always possible. Even when everything seems very simple at the start, it's rare that things don't go a little wrong, so a map and a compass to help you find your way back are a good idea.
I recommend this route. It's varied, not difficult, and a great way to spend some time. Enjoy the walk, enthusiasts and those accompanying you...
Franck,

We had some difficulty finding the starting point and had to check the map a few times along the way. There were people on the rocks, but otherwise it was a lovely walk.
