The engineering structures of the railway line from La Mure to Monteynard

This relatively easy hike offers beautiful views of the eastern flank of the Vercors massif, the Drac valley and the Monteynard dam lake in its first, open section, as well as the Matheysine area towards the peaks overlooking the Matheysine lakes. The second part, which is more shaded, will take you through the surrounding hamlets and past some of the engineering structures of the La Mure tourist railway.

Description of the walk

The hike starts in the village of Monteynard. Head towards the viewpoint on the right after the church when arriving from Grenoble on the D529. There is a car park with toilets.
The village can be reached by bus on the T92 line of the "cars Isère, Auvergne Rhône Alpes" service.

(S/E) Return to the village, cross the main road and head towards the cemetery, leaving the main road on the left.

(1) At the cemetery, continue straight ahead towards the east and begin the ascent, ignoring the first path on the left. The path climbs through the forest to reach the ridge (there are hiking signs).

(2) The route turns right towards the south and descends. After a bend, the path heads north-east and descends towards the hamlet of Majeuil.

(3) Just before Le Majeuil, change direction and turn right onto a path that heads south and overlooks the small road to the hamlet of Le Molard.

(4) Turn left, cross the hamlet keeping to the right, take Chemin de Bellevue, pass a small transformer, stay on the right-hand side of the road and join the departmental road. A pedestrian crossing allows you to cross.

(5) After crossing the main road, take the path opposite, which continues downhill and cuts across the bends of a small road.

(6) After a few metres on the road, look for a path on the left that leads into the forest, heading north-east, and roughly follows the contour lines. (Nice view of a curved viaduct). Follow this path until you reach a small road that leads to the hamlet of La Faurie. Follow this road to the railway bridge, do not enter the village, continue straight on along a path that climbs slightly and runs alongside the railway line.

(7) Turn right, cross the footbridge over the railway line and continue to the hamlet of Les Béthoux.

(8) Turn left and continue along the road for about 100 metres.

(9) Continue along the road for another 100 m until you reach a bend where a bridge crosses the Oula stream. From here, you have a beautiful view of the two viaducts that span the stream.
Retrace your steps for about 100 metres.

(9) Look for a path on the left that descends into the forest along the stream and continue until you reach a large gate and a tarmac road.

(10) Turn left and descend to the hamlet of Le Vivier. Cross the hamlet, staying on the main road (D116B), which climbs uphill. Follow it for three hairpin bends. The change of direction occurs after crossing the level crossing.

(11) Leave the road, turn left and look for the path that climbs up to the right. Follow this path without changing direction.

(12) You will arrive at a new road on a bend. Continue straight ahead, walk along a residential area and find a dirt track. Follow this track and enjoy the views of the Drac valley. After a short climb, you will reach the starting point (S/E).

Notes

There are water sources in the hamlets, and by using your IGN map or the Visorando app, you can find ways to shorten the hike in case of bad weather. Be careful, as some paths can be slippery in wet weather.
There are quite a few hiking signposts along the route, but the markings are very random and you shouldn't rely on them too much.

Worth a visit

You can visit La Motte d'Aveillans to see the fascinating mining museum, which gives a very realistic account of life in the mines.
The La Mure train has been back in service since 2021, but now only covers a small part of the original route that linked Saint-Georges de Commiers to La Mure. It currently stops just above the village of Monteynard, where a platform and a panoramic restaurant have been installed. The views of the lake remain quite spectacular.

A beautiful, easy hike, pleasant at the end of winter. The view is magnificent. The climb up to the ridge is the least interesting part. After that, it's very open.
The GPS track is very good.
Thank you for this lovely walk.

A pleasant and enjoyable walk for the winter season. No difficulty and beautiful views, beautiful architecture...
When I arrived in Vivier, I made a detour to the castle. But in the end, you can't see it because the gate is closed and access is prohibited. So there's no point in making this little detour, especially since you can't see it. You'll get a better view from the first hairpin bend on the way out of Vivier... if the trees aren't too leafy. It's a shame you can't see it better, because it's a beautiful building too.

Easy autumn hike. Superb views of Lake Monteynard, the Vercors and Mont Aiguille. A possible route for climbing La Peyrouse...
...and above all, a wonderful opportunity to discover the engineering structures of the little Train de la Mure.

A varied hike starting at the viewpoint next to the car park. On the way up, there is a bird's eye view of Monteynard-Ville and the Vercors in the background. Ideal for photographers and railway enthusiasts. You can see the imposing Château de la Motte Saint Martin (not open to visitors). The only slight downside is the busy road between Le Vivier and point 11. Completed in 4 hours with a picnic and photo breaks.

A very attractive route with some stunning views.
The description of the route is accurate, and the practical information added by the author is entirely correct (some paths are indeed muddy and slippery in wet weather; sometimes the signposting is unreliable (signs missing)).
On the very last part of the walk, when you come up the Chemin des Neys and reach the Chemin de la Combe, before continuing towards the car park, it is worth stopping at the "Monteynard viewpoint" (just turn left onto the path and walk a few metres...): a space equipped with a picnic table, an orientation table...and superb views! This viewpoint is marked on the IGN map.
Even though I found the start a bit tough (phew, what a climb!), I highly recommend this hike.
