Car park in front of the old lime kilns on the street of the same name in Chalezeule. The route is marked by signposts at intervals, but there are no markers along the path.
(S/E) Walk around the kilns and take the path that enters the grove on the left when facing the kilns. Turn left onto the gravel road and right at the gate towards the viewpoint, leaving Chemin de Clementigney on your right. Then climb left onto Chemin des Buis to reach the viewpoint over the valley and the ruins of the feudal castle of Montfaucon.
(1) Set off again along the path at the end, passing between two large stones. After 200 metres, leave the path that climbs up to the right and continue downhill. A little further down, at the first fork, turn right for about 50 steps and climb up the hillside to the right. You will pass the remains of a pile of stone gathered from fields (dry stone walls).
(2) At the log ramp, climb up to the right for a round trip to the Grotte du Renard cave. Just before a marker post, descend to the cave and then return to the intersection at the log ramp.
(2) Continue straight ahead. You will come to a path descending from the right, marked by a marker post. Continue to the small tarmac road and the second marker post nearby.
(3) Go up to the right, passing over some old ruins, possibly former cabordes (sheep pens). You will come to a path at right angles, which you should take to the left, passing under a somewhat romantic gate of an old ruined property. Do not be tempted to enter. You will come to a very small road which you climb up on the right, following the hedge of a large property.
(4) Shortly after the barrier, climb the steep path on the left to reach the cliff path, which you will follow on the left. There are beautiful views of the valley, the Chapelle des Buis and Trois Chatels. You will arrive at the end of the moats of Fort Bregille (marked by a signpost saying "Le Grand Désert"). Continue straight ahead along the moats. You will pass a superb view of the Citadel. Descend into the moats and turn left to reach the fort's esplanade, which offers another view of the Citadel and the old town of Besançon.
(5) Opposite the entrance to the fort, at the marker post, take the path that descends towards the town centre. A little further down, at the fork, turn right towards Le Grand Désert. Then go up the tarmac road on the right. When it turns right, cut across the bend by taking the path on the right through the grass.
(6) Continue along the path climbing opposite. After crossing a small rectangular clearing, it splits into three. Continue climbing along the middle path. You will come back to the small tarmac road. Turn left for about 50 metres, then right onto the stony path. Continue straight ahead along this "Grande Sommière" until you reach the end, leaving a marked path on your left (towards Boisssy-d'Anglas).
(7) At the end, with the fitness trail on your right, continue straight ahead (towards Chalezeule, then Vareilles Dessus). Stay on this gravel path. After a barrier, turn right. Quickly, at the fork, take the wider path with exposed stones on the right. You will come to a crossroads in the shape of an X, not far from a fence. Take one of the two branches in front of you; they join further on and you will find yourself back at the Clementigney viewpoint.
(1) Return to the car park via the same route you came (S/E).
The route includes cliff-edge paths and unsecured viewpoints. The paths are rocky and slippery in places. Sturdy footwear is essential and walking sticks are recommended.
): very easy to follow to check you've made the right decision at junctions
and there are some beautiful views of the citadel! I took the indicated time, alternating between fairly brisk walking and photo stops!
