The megaliths of the Sailles Plateau

North of Saint-Nectaire, the Plateau de Sailles offers beautiful views of Murol and the Couze Chambon valley. You will discover an ancient troglodyte settlement and some of the megaliths that dot the area around the village, known for its beautiful Romanesque church and cheese.

Description of the walk

In Saint-Nectaire, park in the car park near the cemetery and fire station, north of the village, on the road to Sailles.
Please note! This hike is not fully signposted.

(S/E) Head towards the village on the road, pass a beautiful stone cross a few metres on your left, then ignore a street on your right. Take the next alley on the left (yellow disc marking on a wooden electricity pole). Shortly after, at the intersection, keep left to follow the Chemin du Breuil.

Look for a red and white marker on a low wall behind a bench. This is theGR®®30, which you will follow until further notice. Continue along the path that extends from the lane. Further up, you will reach the D150 at the yellow "L'Homme" marker and an electrical transformer.

(1) Cross the D150 and continue along the wide path that climbs up opposite, slightly to your left. Further on, you will see a small stone cross on the right-hand side of the path. You will arrive at a road (D640) at the yellow marker "Plateau des Farges".

(2) Continue straight ahead towards La Fonchaude (andGR®®). At the next intersection, take the path that descends to the right. Near a farm, ignore a path on the left and then another on the right just after, then come out onto a road.

(3) Continue along the path opposite, following the direction of a yellow sign and the GR®®. At a fork in the path, continue downhill, keeping to the left and following the direction of a yellow sign. Further on, at another fork in the path, turn left to cross the Ruisseau de Lambre stream. Further on, you will come to a small road with a picnic table on your left.

(4) Follow the road to the left, then leave the red and whiteGR®® markings and turn left at the first street. Cross a bridge (Ruisseau de Sozède) and enter the hamlet of Lenteuge. Immediately turn right onto Rue de la Glisse to pass in front of a beautiful bread oven, still in use today. Shortly afterwards, ignore Rue Briquette on your left and continue until you reach the yellow signpost marked "Leunteuge". Continue straight ahead towards Pont de Lambre. Shortly afterwards, ignore Rue Paul Hyvert on your left and continue to Rue le Pré du Four (D150). Turn right and follow this road.

(5) A few metres before a bridge, at an electricity pylon marked with a yellow sign, take the path on the right. Continue along the Ruisseau de Lambre stream, which this path runs alongside, slightly above it at first, then along the bank. You will eventually come to a road at the yellow signpost marked "Pont de Lambre".

(6) Follow it to the left towards Foncheyroune, crossing the bridge over the Lambre stream. About 150 metres further on, take a path that climbs to the right (a few metres before a faded yellow cross on an electricity pole along the road). After a few bends, you will come to a crossroads at the yellow marker "Foncheyroune".

(7) Continue straight ahead towards Bournis. When you reach a road, take the path opposite and slightly to the right, indicated by a green sign for "Saint-Nectaire Menhir, Dolmen, grotte". This is a wide gravel path that leads to a car park.

(8) At the intersection marked with the yellow signpost "Bournis", follow the path on the right for a round trip to discover a contemporary work from the Horizon programme (until September 2018), then, a little further on, the Freydefont Menhir, standing in a field on your right.

(8) On your return, take the path opposite towards the Dolmen de la Pineyre, which is actually a small tumulus with a dolmen in the centre. Back in

(8) continue left towards Panet. Shortly afterwards, you will arrive at the crossroads marked "Panet" and continue straight on towards "Châteauneuf". Further on, the path narrows and a short, steep climb leads to the summit of Puy de Châteauneuf. Note a yellow sign on a rock on your left saying "Puy de Châteauneuf, tricky descent" and turn onto the path on the left. Then follow the yellow disc markings for the fairly steep descent. At the intersection with another path, you will find an information sign about the Châteauneuf Caves.

(9) Turn right for a round trip to the caves. These are actually a single large cave carved into the cliff and divided into several "chambers". Back at the crossroads,

(9) continue straight ahead to descend to Saint-Nectaire on a less steep trail than before, marked with a yellow disc. Further down, you will arrive at a more open space, at an intersection marked with a yellow "Châteauneuf" sign. Continue to the left in the direction of Clos du Vallon. At the next intersection, at a slightly worn wooden bench, continue to the left. You will come to a street at the first houses of the village of Saint-Nectaire, then, at the yellow marker "Clos du Vallon", turn left towards La Parre. You will immediately arrive at Rue Barberoux.

(10) Turn right to visit the superb Romanesque basilica of Notre-Dame du Mont Cornadore. Take particular note of the beautiful capitals in the choir, some of which are carved and still polychrome. Then return to Rue Barberoux, retracing your steps.

(10) Continue along this street to reach the car park (S/E) near the fire station.

Some photos here

(8) The Freydefond Menhir and the Pierres Dissonantes. The Pierres Dissonantes artwork consists of six colourful sculptures inspired by the Freydefond Menhir. They were made from a silicone mould and then cast in resin. Part of the menhir's silhouette is hidden underground. The artist imagined the buried surface, giving the reproductions a larger dimension. Exhibition until 23 September 2018.

Dolmen de la Pineyre. Its name refers to the pine grove surrounding the monument. It is common for megaliths to be located near woods. The tumulus is approximately 15 metres in diameter; the capstone, weighing over 25 tonnes (a basalt slab from a lava flow), rested on four supports (but the slab has slipped and now rests on only two of them).

(9) Châteauneuf caves. These caves were dug and developed by humans in volcanic rock from the eruptions of the Monts Dore more than 2 million years ago. The rock was relatively easy to dig, allowing the inhabitants to live sheltered from the Auvergne weather and to have durable dwellings that could withstand the passage of time.

(10) Notre-Dame du Mont Cornadore: a Romanesque basilica dedicated to Saint Nectaire d'Auvergne, standing on Mont Cornadore. It is one of the five "major" Romanesque churches in Auvergne, along with the Basilica of Notre-Dame-du-Port in Clermont-Ferrand, the Church of Saint-Austremoine in Issoire, the Basilica of Notre-Dame d'Orcival and the Church of Notre-Dame de Saint-Saturnin.

Around Saint-Nectaire, numerous farms offer their cheeses for direct sale.

A lovely walk. Best avoided on wet days (dangerous descents). Superb views over the Sancy. Easy to follow and well signposted route. A very beautiful spring walk (the leaves haven't yet obscured the views...).

Despite the heatwave, this trail is very shaded and remains pleasant. In the hamlet of Lanteuge, there are two water sources. One fountain is near the oven (unfortunately closed) and the other is at the top of the village.
Thanks for the route.

A fairly easy and pleasant hike for exploring the hills around St-Nectaire. The menhir is a bit ridiculous, but the dolmen (excavated burial mound) is well worth seeing, and the location is pretty. The caves are nice too.

Otherwise, nothing to report, takes about 3½ hours.

A beautiful, fairly easy route with views of the village of Saint Nectaire and the Chaîne des Puys, plus a visit to the megaliths and remains of troglodyte dwellings at the end of the trail (and a Romanesque basilica as a bonus, but this is accessible by car).
The paths are good, but the final descent makes it well worth wearing good walking shoes.
We didn't use the description to find our way around, as the route is perfectly clear.
Thanks to the author.

Be careful of rocky terrain towards the end before the cave, but above all, be prepared for a lot of walking in the undergrowth. This makes it ideal in summer when it's hot, as there aren't any real panoramic views to enjoy. Perhaps, as someone who has loved the Auvergne for 40 years, I'm becoming a bit demanding 😉.
The menhir... it's hilarious. Don't make it a priority. This is a hike to warm up before tackling the real trails.
Completed as a couple in 3 hours and 20 minutes, including a picnic.
However, the route was perfectly mapped out on Visorando.

A beautiful hike in perfect weather. Varied landscapes and stunning views over much of the route, including the Puy de Sancy and Murol Castle. Also worth discovering are the Freydefont menhir, the Pineyre dolmen and the prehistoric caves at Chateauneuf. A visit to St Nectaire Church is recommended.
As usual, we followed the route exclusively using the map on the Visorando app, with no problems.

It was an ideal time to observe the still snow-covered Sancy and Murol Castle as we climbed up to the plateau, but you need to pay close attention to the directions, as many of the yellow signs have no legible inscriptions

A pleasant hike through woods and countryside with beautiful views; we did a variation starting from Lanteuge, passing through the Champille plateau and stopping for a tasting at the Lambres cheese farm (excellent St Nectaire cheese). This adds just 2 km, making a total of 14 km in 3½ hours of walking, plus stops. The megaliths and cave are quite interesting, as is the geology: granite, granite arena, basalt and rhyolite (pumice stone).
