Châteauneuf Caves, Freydefont Menhir, La Pineyre Dolmen

This route takes you to the Châteauneuf Caves, ancient cave dwellings, then the small Freydefond Menhir, with its viewpoint, and the Dolmen de la Pineyre burial mound. The return journey follows a wild and steep path through the undergrowth.

Description of the walk

Start near the Saint-Nectaire cemetery, Place du Marchidial, on the edge of the D150 (free parking in August 2024).

(S/E) Head towards the village centre and the town hall.

(1) Continue straight on to the Church of Notre-Dame du Mont Cornadore.

(2) Walk around it and return to the town hall.

(1) At the corner of the church, turn into the small downhill street on the left. Ignore a turn-off to the left and continue along a path. At the three-way junction, turn right and climb up to a junction on a flat stretch.

(3) Turn right, stay on the main path, pass five hairpin bends and reach a fork. Head straight ahead, almost level, and you’ll soon reach the troglodytic site of the Grottes de Châteauneuf.

(4) Return to the previous fork and climb the steep path on the left. Pass the summit of the hill, then after a descent and an ascent, continue straight ahead to reach a road; follow this to the right until you reach the top of the hill.

(5) Turn onto the track on the left and arrive at the Menhir de Freydefont. This is located about twenty metres away in a field on the right-hand side (please respect the crops).

(6) Return to the previous junction.

(5) Head to the car park opposite, then continue along the path through the woodland until you reach the Freydefont Menhir burial mound.

(7) Go round it on the right and continue along the path, which is barely visible at first, as it heads rightwards downhill. Reach the bottom of the valley and follow it downhill. Caution: some sections of this path are short but steep. In wet weather, you are bound to slip for up to ten metres. When you reach a clearing, continue for a few more metres, turn right at the bottom of the gully and reach a fork.

(8) Continue left, downhill, then follow a path to the road. Follow it to the right with care, skirting the cemetery, and reach Place du Marchidial (S/E).

Notes

Between (7) and (8), the path crosses the valley floor three or four times via a short, steep, and muddy slope – take care in wet weather! It is possible to go round it on the grassier section, but some brambles or small shrubs may get in the way.

A little-used trail under the bright December sun. The church is magnificent, with a beautiful nativity scene featuring large raku figurines as Christmas approaches.
Very early on in the hike, there is a beautiful, long climb. Magnificent views over St Nectaire, Murol Castle and the Sancy massif.
A short detour to the caves of Chateauneuf, impressive for their size and height.
There are no real signs or markings, except at some of the major hiking trail crossings. Keep a close eye on your progress on the Viso map.
Around points 7-8, there are a few slides where you almost have to sit down to get down. Not necessarily easy for everyone, but there's no choice.
Around point 8, I reread the description to make sure I was going down into the valley, as there were few signs and the GPS was a bit lost. At the same time, you can see the slides made by those who went before... That helps guide you.
Despite these few difficulties, it was a really interesting and very beautiful hike.

Beautiful hike, but it's a shame that the signage is virtually non-existent. Much more difficult than stated in the description. Not recommended for children.

A very beautiful hike, I can confirm there are 3-4 steep slopes after the dolmen! I would not recommend it for young children or those who are easily frightened, so be warned, I would say this hike is not as "easy" as indicated!

After the dolmen, the descent has several slippery sections that can be a bit tricky even in dry weather. You might need to use your bum!

We set off from the church in Saint-Nectaire. The Chateauneuf cave offers a lovely view of the Sancy massif and the Chaudefour valley. Further up, on the plateau, we walked with the Sancy massif to our left and the Puy de Dôme to our right.
In Le Vernet-Sainte-Marguerite, we had lunch in a very friendly restaurant, with a very affordable set menu.
Return via Puy Mazeyres and its orientation point at 919 m.
A lovely walk in the sunshine.

A pleasant route, but there are some tricky sections on the descent – avoid it when the ground is slippery.
