Description of the walk

(S/E) Start from the forecourt of Saint-Julien Church. Take Rue de la Fontaine Saint-Julien to the wash house of the same name.

(1) At the wash house, take the path on the right, then the second on the right and continue along this path, climbing up to reach the Grands Moulins reservoirs.

(2). Take the road opposite, go round the hamlet of La Forêt, staying on this road which leads to an old drinking trough on the left.

(3) In front of the trough, turn left twice in succession.

(4) At a four-way junction, ignore the first path on the right, take the next one on the right and join the D73 road to cross it.

(5) At the end of the track, facing a thick hedge, turn 90° to the left and continue along this track. Join the road, taking care to take the next track on the left. When you reach the crossroad, head towards Thury to reach the hamlet of Panny. At the entrance to the hamlet, before the old pumping station, go up the street on the right towards Gemigny, then take the first street on the right and, at the large bend to the right, take the path on the left. This return path leads to the Boutaut spring and an old feudal motte (traces only).

(6) Turn back. Back in the hamlet, go down the street on the right and take the first path on the right, which passes in front of the village’s old wash house. Continue along this path, turning left at the next junction. At the top of this section, go down to the left to join a slightly wider path at the bottom. At the junction, turn right, then take the first left to reach the D3 road. Cross with care and take the small path leading down to the Moulery wash house.

(7) Continue heading due south. Cross the D3 road again with care, take the first path opposite and the next one on the left, cross the road again with care and continue until you reach a small road, then turn right. At the second path on the left, leave the road and take the path that goes uphill.

(8) Then follow the edge of the Bois du Roichat until you reach a cross-path.

(9) Turn left. At the top of the climb, you will find the start of a path on the right.

(10) Take this and continue along the most clearly marked path. When you reach the fences of the properties opposite, continue to the left, keeping the houses on your right. The route gradually leads into the woods until you reach a ditch filled with logs to make crossing easier. Immediately after, turn right twice in succession. Continue for about 200 m and turn left down a slope (the path opposite leads into the housing estate and is private). Keep going straight on. You’ll reach a crossroads with four paths, with fields to the right and left.

(11) Turn right and enter the area of the old underground quarries –Caution: Natura 2000 site. It’s a bit of a rollercoaster ride! If you visit these quarries, watch out for rolling stones! Cross the road carefully and take the path once to the right and once to the left.

(12) Leave the path and continue straight on along a small tarmac road which leads round the hamlet of Grangette on the left. Ignore the road on the left leading to Thury and, after the farm, take a path on the right which passes in front of the Puits des Champs.

(13) Turn right, at the end of the path take the road opposite and then the first left. Continue along this road until it joins a main road and immediately turn left at the junction onto the path. Walk down to the D4 road.

(14) Cross with care and turn right, then take the first path on the left, followed by the first path on the left again, which climbs up to the hamlet of Colangette.

(15) At the Carrouge crossroads, go straight on for about 700m. Cross the D3 road and continue straight ahead, towards La Forêt.

(16) At the second bend, leave the road and take the track slightly to the left. Then take the first left towards the south-east, which will lead you back to the starting point, finishing with a short stretch of road (S/E).

A long walk through beautiful countryside coloured by the crops being grown. Few farms, lots of fields stretching as far as the eye can see. The walk is easy despite the distance and elevation. Grass paths and some tarmac roads, with no traffic. Wash houses, some of which have been converted into picnic areas. Small villages and hamlets with beautiful old houses.

I did the hike on a trail. The signposting on posts was excellent (hike 9 one way for pedestrians, one way for mountain bikes) and on the ground. Three or four signposts were missing, but with the route on my mobile phone, I was able to find my way very easily. A very natural hike, exclusively on paths, with beautiful plateaus offering unobstructed views of the surrounding countryside. As a bonus, you pass through small villages. In short, it's a total delight for nature lovers.

Beautiful, hilly hike with well-marked trails. A bit worn out, but well worth it.

when the vegetation is more developed.

A solo hike on a rainy day: a wonderful encounter with deer. What more could you ask for?
Well, I was exhausted by the end of the day, but it was worth it.

Hello Sylade,
Thank you for your comments.
Visorando, like the authors of the published hikes, is not responsible for the marking of the routes, if any. On this hike, as I mention in the practical information, there are markings, but in this area, malicious individuals tear down or break some of the markers. Furthermore, in the flat areas, the markers are on the ground and consist of concrete blocks painted white with yellow arrows. Despite the efforts of volunteers, they may be less visible due to the vegetation. It should also be noted that this route is also a mountain bike trail in the opposite direction.
I therefore advise you to follow the described route carefully.

Sometimes there are too many signs, sometimes there are none or they are difficult to understand, so a GPS is necessary. For example, in Geminy there is a street called Rue des Lavoirs (Washing Place Street) where there are no washing places. The washing place is not signposted and is "hidden" in a recess.
A very beautiful hike when the fields are in full bloom, but tough in the sun as there is little shade.

Magnificent landscapes in spring, autumn and winter, slightly less so in summer.
We did a shortened version of the route in summer 2013 with friends and got partially lost due to a lack of proper signage (too old or missing), particularly in the La Forêt - Moulery - Sougères area.
We didn't have the opportunity to do it again this year, but I can confirm that the signposting seems to have been seriously improved where it was defective, particularly in the area between Moulery and Sougères.
Thanks to the Thury town hall, the tourist office and the local authorities.

The walk around the wash houses near Thury is a lovely walk with few roads. We had a great time.

Thank you, Diaurret, for your comments about this hike. Indeed, the Forterre section is very pleasant in all seasons except on days when the sun is beating down. On those days, the views are also really beautiful in the early morning.

Gérard,

Good news ahead, then, for this beautiful region that deserves it.
Well done for your work and that of the volunteers.

Don't worry, piépié0702, this route will be re-marked this spring in both directions. One direction will be for the walking route and the other for the mountain bike route. The edge of the Roichat is also really interesting for the views it offers.
A good handful of volunteers will be working to re-mark some 160 km of trails with permanent markings.

An interesting route, particularly towards the end in the Roichat woods, linked to the famous Battle of Fontenoy in 841.
I did it on a mountain bike, and the description and route are good, but it's a shame that the signposting on the ground is very poor. This could be improved.
I recommend this route.

Good evening, Annie,
I'm very happy to hear back about this hike, which was posted recently.
In response to:

However, in the description, the author mentions Neolithic and Palaeolithic sites! I must admit that this requires a bit of imagination, as there isn't even a hint of a "pebble" that might suggest this.

Some of the remains recovered are preserved in the tower of the church in Thury. To find out more, I invite you to read the publications at this link: http://thury.89.free.fr/rubrique.php3?id...
As for the quarry, there are actually several, including one that is very interesting, but you have to spend a bit of time looking for fossilised stones.
To register for hikes, no problem, we look forward to seeing you!
