(S/E) From the Lac Pavin car park, head towards the lake.
(1) When you reach the lake, follow the path on the right along the lake.
(2) At the fork, turn right onto the path overlooking the lake. Continue to the next intersection.
(3) Then take a sharp right turn. After about 350 m, ignore a path that branches off to the right. At the next junction (sign with map), turn left onto a steep, stony path that gradually becomes more visible. At a junction, turn right and you will soon reach the summit of Puy de Montchal (admire the view).
(4) Retrace your steps: do not go down the steep path on the other side; follow the signs for Lac Pavin. At the previous junction, turn right.
(5) Take the path on the right that crosses the Puy de Montchal crater. Leave the crater and turn left onto a wide path that descends and leads to a crossroads with several directions.
(6) Turn right. At the next fork, turn left towards Lac de Montcineyre (PR®20). At the next junction, turn left onto a stone path.
(7) Join a tarmac road and follow it to the right for 800 metres.
(8) In a left-hand bend, leave the road and take a grassy path opposite, which continues into the woods.
(9) At the edge of the woods, join theGR® 4A and 30trails and follow them to the right. Stay on the main path, marked in red and white, and ignore any side paths. This will take you to the eastern tip of Lac de Montcineyre.
(10) Turn left (east) and continue along the twoGR® trails. At the next junction, leave the red and white markings and turn left onto a wide track towards Lac de Bourdouze.
(11) Join the D36 road and follow it to the left. Stay on the road for about 1.2 km.
(12) At the Lac de Bourdouze car park (you can make a return trip to the lake on the right), take thesecond path on the left towards Anglard. Further on, ignore a path coming from the left, cross the D36 and continue along the wide path opposite.
(13) In Anglard, cross the village on the main road and walk past the fountain on your right. At the exit, turn left towards Lac Pavin. Go downhill and ignore a path on the right.
(14) Cross the D36, follow it for a few metres to the right, then turn left onto a path that continues into a meadow. Use the ladder to climb over the fence and walk along the fence on your right. Leave the meadow and follow the path that climbs and crosses the woods to Chandèze. Cross the village and reach the crossroads where there is a small cross on the right.
(15) Cross the road and go straight ahead on the path that climbs above the village. At the next crossroads, go straight ahead then turn left onto the path.
(16) At the fork, turn right towards Lac Pavin.
(17) At the next crossroads, turn left. After a good kilometre, you will reach a tarmac road near Lac Estivadoux.
(18) Cross the tarmac road and continue straight ahead. Join theGR®30and follow it to the left towards Lac Pavin. At the tarmac road, turn right and continue for a few hundred metres.
(19) Take a path on the left that descends towards the shore of Lac Pavin. When you reach the lake, turn right and walk along the lake.
(1) Climb up on the right to reach the car park (S/E).
