Lac Blanc and Lac Noir, starting from Pairis

A lovely, relatively easy hike that takes you to Lacs Blancs and Lacs Noirs via the lower route. The route is suitable for winter, when the ridges are too snow-covered to hike easily without snowshoes.

Description of the walk

Park in the lay-by by the roadside at the Lodges des Hauts de Pairis, located 2.5 km west of Orbey (68).

(S/E) From there, carefully walk down the main road to reach the Pairis hospital. Turn left onto the small road marked with a red circle towards Chèvremont, Le Neuf Pré – Le Pré Bracot – Lac Blanc.
After about 500m, do not follow the path towards Lac Noir but continue along the main track for a gentle warm-up.

(1) After 1 km, follow the Yellow Disc towards Lac Blanc. A little further on, the small road narrows into a path. Pass close to Le Neuf Pré and then the excellent farmhouse inn at Le Pré Bracot.

(2) Continue along the wide, zigzagging path, then onto the track that narrows into a footpath. Keep following the Yellow Disc for about 600m.

(3) At the junction, turn left following the Blue Cross towards Lac Blanc. A little further on, after crossing two tracks, turn right onto the path marked with the Blue Cross, which veers discreetly off the main track and leads onto the road 200m from Lac Blanc

(4) . Approach the lake by following the road to the right along the verge, making sure not to miss the superb view over the Orbey valley.

(5) After admiring Lac Blanc and reading the very interesting information boards, take the Cornélius Yellow Rectangle path, which starts near the railing and close to the road.

(6) After a wide bend to the right, turn left and head straight down to Lac Noir, which you’ll reach after about 50 minutes.

(7) After admiring this second lake, the route continues along the small road that crosses the Lac Noir bridge and leads, after 400m, to the Amis de la Nature refuge in the Val d'Orbey.

(8) After passing the few holiday homes (former EDF houses) on either side of the path, continue straight on towards the Col du Wettstein.

(9) At the fork, turn right. Pass close to the hamlet of Les Hautes Huttes, then continue straight on towards the Col du Wettstein, following the Yellow Rectangle markings for about 1 km.

(10) At the junction, turn right then immediately left and continue to the pass.

(11) At the Col du Wettstein, turn left onto the D48 for about 100m, passing close to the WWI military cemetery.

(12) 100m further down, take the path on the right marked with a Red Disc towards Orbey. At the junction, leave the access road to the hamlet of La Lomberg on your right and continue straight on.

(13) At the next junction, turn onto the path on the right (the path on the left joins the main path further on anyway) and continue to follow the markings to reach the hamlet of Le Coin on the D48, near the beautiful farmhouse Auberge du Rain des Chênes.

(14) Follow the road to the right for about 150m, then leave it to take the path on the left towards Orbey. Go round the dark Noirmont massif to the south.

(15) Continue along this path, following the Rain du Pair stream, and keep going straight on at every junction you come to. Reach the junction on the D48II Orbey / Pairis. Turn left and head back up the D48II to return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

(7) At Lac Noir, you’ll find another excellent and friendly inn that knows how to cater to hungry hikers. Perhaps it’s time to make the most of it?

- Wear good walking boots, preferably high-top ones in winter, as some sections may be snowy, icy or soggy.
- The hike takes around 5 hours, so you’ll need to bring provisions for the journey
- There are several springs and places to eat along the route: the inns at Pré Bracot, Lac Blanc or Lac Noir, and Le Rain des Chênes! Remember to book in advance as they are often fully booked.
The Amis de la Nature refuge, located near Lac Noir, can also provide shelter at weekends.

We set off on this hike, but along the route there were no signposts or landmarks to tell us if we were on the right track. So we went the wrong way right from the start
Given our mistakes at the start of the route, we had walked 4 km but still hadn’t reached the 2 km mark
We followed our GPS and were forced to cut the walk short, skipping Lac Noir, to get back to our car
It’s a shame there was no information or signposting; we’re disappointed.

a very pleasant walk
That day, however, it was windy – very windy – even though we thought we’d be sheltered by the rocks overlooking the lakes

The hike had been organised for Sunday 25 March as part of an outing with the Club Vosgien de Saint-Hippolyte (68).

Beautiful sunshine spurred the group on, and so 26 of us gathered at the start in Pairis at around 9.30 am.
The start was a gentle walk along a small road to warm up, then turned into a lovely path and further on into a magnificent trail leading out not far from Lac Blanc.
At the start of spring, the two lakes, Le Blanc and Le Noir, were still firmly frozen over and therefore both white...
The paths were still somewhat snowy around the lakes and therefore a bit slippery. Apart from that, there were no notable difficulties.
We had a packed lunch at the Refuge des Amis de la Nature at Lac Noir, which provided us with drinks and coffee.
The afternoon involved almost no uphill sections and took us through beautiful, often open, landscapes of stubble fields.
On the way back, the paths and tracks were no longer snow-covered, which made the descents easier.

On arrival at around 4.45 pm, everyone was feeling revitalised by the energy of nature and the sunshine.
The GPS devices showed 18–19 km and just over 600 m of elevation gain.

We set off from Pré Bracot with two children. The snow was quite deep but the trail was well-groomed; the signposting was impeccable, as always with the Club Vosgien. We stopped at Lac Blanc and returned to the lodge at the Pré Bracot farmhouse inn. A very pleasant day.
