Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the hamlet of Casse, at the top of Rue Centrale.

(S/E) Take the path leading up towards the causse (north-west). Follow the Cas stream (on your right); it runs dry in summer. Further on, pass the Cas spring. You’ll reach a junction not far from the hamlet of Cariteau, which is on your left.

(1) Turn right and join a tarmac track. Follow it to the left and rejoin the Route de la Croix de Triel, which you take to the right for about 500m.

(2) At Goulpa (ruins on the left), take the path on the right leading towards the Mas de Dadas. Take a detour to the right to see the spring.

(3) Retrace your steps and continue to the right towards the Mas de Véziou. Cross the hamlet, then the tarmac track, and follow the path opposite towards the Mas de Paquet. When you reach the road from Larnagol to Triel, turn right and follow it for just under 100 metres.

(4) Turn right onto a path that leads through the woods to the track known as the ‘Mas de Dadas’ track, heading towards the Mas de Castanet. Turn right. Further on, on the right, you’ll see a caselle.

(5) When you reach a junction where a tarmac road meets footpaths, take the path on the left known as the Carguèbes path.

(6) About a hundred metres further on, at a cairn, turn right onto the path known as the ‘Chemin de la Lèze’, which descends towards the village. When you reach the road, turn left towards Larnagol. Turn right at the town hall and walk through the village to return to the Casse car park (S/E).

Notes

A ‘caselle’ is a dry-stone hut that was once used as a shelter for people or animals, or as a tool shed, in the Haut-Quercy region,

Worth a visit

At the end of the walk, take a detour into the village to visit ‘L’Annexe’, a community space, bar, exhibition venue and shop selling local produce.
Make the most of it and visit the picturesque village.

The path must not have been used for a long time; it was overgrown with brambles, scrub and the like, and there were hardly any signposts. We found a spring, well hidden behind the scrub. We lost our way and ended up taking other paths and walking through the meadows. It’s a shame this hiking trail isn’t properly maintained and signposted!

Between kilometres 3 and 4, the route comes to an unfenced property with dogs running loose, barking and blocking the way. We had to take a shortcut to reach kilometre 5.

Otherwise, the walk, undertaken in fine weather in May, is really pleasant. I didn’t see any springs, but the lush greenery, the stone buildings and walls, and the village of Lanargol are well worth a visit.

The Lot region in general is well worth a visit.

Nice walk but the trail is very poorly maintained at the start
Best done with GPS as there are few signposts
The village is typical and interesting

The “Les hauts de Larnagol” route is poorly maintained. The route, as shown on Visorando, is feasible and accurate. The path is overgrown with grass and plants, at least this spring (May 2025). Furthermore, the yellow painted markers are often repainted with grey paint, making them difficult to see. This is probably done on purpose. Sections 4 to 6 are better tackled on the road rather than the narrow footpath. Otherwise, it is an interesting walk, particularly the sections where you descend from the road via a narrow gravel path into the village of Larnagol, and then leave the village via a long climb to the higher part of the walk.

Summary of the sections:
- From the village to sections 1 and 2, the route is well marked and offers a pleasant climb through the forest.
- Sections 2–3 are poorly marked, but manageable; take the road for sections 3–5.
- The section from 5 back to the village is a great part of the route.

This walk is quite pleasant, being fairly easy with a modest elevation gain and taking place largely in woodland or undergrowth (which is welcome in hot weather). But whether it was due to errors or oversights on the part of the trail planner, or because certain paths had been blocked (deliberately? accidentally?), or simply because we were rather clumsy that day, we lost the trail between points 3 and 4 and had to make do with returning to the road (which, to be honest, was very quiet) to reach Larnagol. Furthermore, the path is poorly maintained even before the section mentioned above; the spring at point 3 is impossible to find, with no signpost indicating it, and as for the signposts, the few we did find had fallen over and were virtually illegible. Whoever is responsible for the walking routes in Larnagol, if anyone, should go and have a look. This is a matter of some urgency.

This route is very poorly described and, although it is interesting, we lost our way several times.
Either the route should be signposted where the signage is lacking, or the route should be amended to follow the paths that actually exist.

This walk is described as easy, but it’s actually quite difficult
At the start, it’s a constant climb up to 2,600 metres, with a few brief respite points, and then you carry on climbing
Of course, you then head back down
The route is very poorly signposted; you go from grey markings to yellow ones and then nothing at all – where are we going?
At the top, we’re treated to a stunning view and some beautiful scenery

A lovely walk between the damp valley floor and the causse, featuring a beautiful cazelle, a spring and some scenic viewpoints.
Yellow PR markings, some of which were covered in grey (?). The (4) was slightly off my route and we missed the right-hand bend a little further on. We returned via another PR path to Larnaguol near the campsite – 6.5 km and 250 m of elevation gain, taking 3 hours including a break.
