Description of the walk

Park at the Verrerie (glassmakers), slightly further down the D978. Coming from Autun, it's on your right.

(S/E) From the park, with your back to the houses, turn left onto the D978. Cross the road, take the footpath which starts at the end of the safety rail, arrive at a carriage road, after the small bridge.

Go right up the course of the Canche, past the power station to the penstock.

(2) After the penstock, ford the river and follow the Canche along its right bank, (a path laden with obstacles, fallen trees, small climbs, slippery fords...). At the top of the gorge, on the other side to your left, you'll see a riverside path.

(3) Cross the Canche and join the path. Follow it to the right and join the road (D179). Go past the dam and follow the road for about 1500m. Miss a path to the right and soon reach another fork in the road.

(4) Don't follow the GR®°13 on your left, but the unmarked track on your right.

(5) After just over 300m, take a large track to the left and follow it back to the forest road. Leave the 1st track on your right and the tracks on your left.

(6) Back on the gravelled forest road, follow it to the left, ignoring all other junctions. When you reach the D978, cross it.

Turn left towards Château-Chinon.
At the first crossroads, don't take the road on your right but the one opposite (D388), follow it through the woods and take the GR® on your right.

(8) Follow it straight ahead, missing a large track on the left, until you come to a road on the right (GR®) as far as the next crossroads.

(9) After 400m, turn left onto a track (GR®). When you reach the houses, follow the road to the right, which will take you to the cemetery.

(10) After the cemetery, turn right again, following this road for about 600m.

(11) Take a large track on your left, descending into the fields.

(12) At Les Guillaumes, fork right, then left. Cross the D978 and follow it to the left for 100m, then turn right onto the Canche gorges road.

(13) Before the wood, take a track on your right, then immediately left (leaving the GR®). Return to the road, cross it and continue along the track opposite. Leave the first large track on your left, and when you come to a large perpendicular track, turn right. The path ends here on a steep, rounded slope, take the right-hand part and descend it, you'll arrive behind the power station.

(2) Cross the river Canche and turn left onto the path you took on the outward journey to reach your vehicle (S/E).

A very pleasant walk, with a few sections where you need to be comfortable to climb. Be careful when it's raining, it's slippery.
Busier in the gorge, otherwise fairly quiet.
There are bridges, so no need for boots at this time of year (beware of flash floods).
Last section back down to the station: the path is almost invisible, so keep an eye on it and dare to descend.

The path back to the torrent at the power station is unmarked and not visible. You need to zoom in a lot to find the dotted start on the map.

Very pleasant walk, especially the first part in the gorges. Quite technical though, and certainly slippery in wet weather. For us, the weather was warm and dry and the shelter was welcome. The end of the walk is less sheltered and a bit tarmac. We had a minor problem with a complete lack of mobile phone coverage in the middle of the route (between points 5 and 7).

We also did the 11km walk in 2022. It's not the same, and from memory, we thought it was nicer, with less road. I have the impression that it's no longer on visorando.

We did it this 11/08/24 and had already done part of it in 2022. At the time it was called Les gorges de la Canche from Roussillon-en-
Morvan and was limited to 11kms. The first part is still a pleasant route along the Canche and is very busy.
The second part between points 3-4 and 6-7 is too far on tarmac roads. No other walkers on this side, which is a shame.

We set off from Roussillon en Morvan (10) and went straight to the start following the GR* - without going through (11), (12) and (13), which seemed to cause a few problems. The climb up the gorges is really nice. After that, we found that there were a lot of roads and a fairly monotonous track. The crossing of the wood (7) is pleasant. We didn't meet anyone on the walk, apart from at the top of the gorge, where we passed a lot of families coming down.

Very nice walk, the only difficulties are between points 2 and 3 where the sections are very difficult, especially for beginners, but the rest of the route is fairly safe, so be careful after level 13 just above the power station to get back to point 2, don't miss the little path to the right with a fairly steep slope, without GPS you wouldn't have found it.
Finally, I'd say there's quite a bit of tarmac in places, but I can't see any other alternative, and the scenery is so wonderful that it's easy to forget.

Very nice walk,
However, in the description, more emphasis should be placed on the difficult sections in the Canche gorges ("difficult" classification), as this is not suitable for hikers who are not seasoned hikers or ageing hikers ....

We had to take the road because we couldn't find the path back down behind the hydro-electric power station.

Nice walk.
At point (2), you have to go up the Canche on its left bank (when you go with the current, the left bank is on the left). For this walk, you go up the river on the right, but this is the left bank of the river. This is the most complicated part of the walk, but it is still accessible. Most of the walk is in the shade, which makes it very pleasant even in the heat. Beautiful landscapes and magnificent forests. Don't hesitate to do it!

Nice ride, especially in the gorges. A bit too much tarmac for our taste.
Circuit along the gorges, follow the GR (points 2 and 3) no difficulties crossing the Canche there are bridges.
Point 13: the descent must be dangerous in wet weather.

A beautiful hike and I was on my own the whole way. The first 2km were sporty, as expected and, in fairness, should be described as "difficult" as I know many people, particularly those with shorter legs, would struggle with some of the climbing.
There was a lot of water on this occasion but thanks to the footbridges and a fallen tree, I never got my feet wet.
A bit more road than expected but given the beauty of the forest and undergrowth, as well as the perfect weather conditions, it was an exceptional walk.
Although the descriptions are good, it would have been easy to miss a few bends. It's important to follow the GPS track.
The only real problem was the end (after "The path ends here on a steep, rounded slope"). And the GPS track didn't help. I made four attempts but each time I ended up on a rock that would have required a 10 metre jump. I retraced my steps to find the car via the D978.
Other hikers found a way down. But where? But how? I'd be happy to try again one day.

Last but not least: 2 magnificent footbridges have been installed, allowing you to cross the Canche at just about any point you want. A real highlight!

We actually set off from the weir bridge and reached the hydroelectric plant.
The 2 passages to cross the Canche and go to the right and above the gorges go back to the left, we did them with our shoes off because there was a lot of water and we were afraid of slipping on the rocks. But otherwise, the gorges were magnificent because in summer, having so much water is rare... (Along the Canche, we followed the yellow and red/white markings, which were very useful as the route had changed from what we had done 10 years ago).
The rest of the route was trouble-free, with beautiful views. A sporty and unusual walk.
