Discover the hamlets of Haut-Morvan via forest roads.

Discover the Haut-Morvan. Hamlets are scattered across a landscape marked by ridges and steep-sided valleys. The forest and its exploitation are omnipresent. Streams and animals in the meadows complete the picture. It is a beautiful walk between hamlets, countryside and forest with brief and occasional difficulties.

Description of the walk

This information sheet was written after completing the PR® trail called the Boucle des Galvachers, created on the initiative of the French Hiking Federation, the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté committee and its volunteers.

The starting point is in a car park between the Maison des Vacheliers and a restaurant in Anost. The post office is just across the road.

Yellow markings all along the route.

(S/E) Walk up the main street where the car park is located, passing in front of the town hall. Turn left onto Rue du Docteur Roy. At the T-junction, turn left. Before reaching the main road, turn right onto the gravel path leading downhill. Then follow the road as it curves around.

(1) At the campsite entrance on your left, go up the path through the woods on the right. Leave a path on your right and continue uphill. Shortly afterwards, you will see a forest on your left and a horticultural farm on your right. Continue uphill, heading south-west.

(2) Enter the hamlet of Bussy, go straight ahead, leaving the roads on your right. At the junction with a main road (D88), take the road opposite that goes left and then turns right. At a fork, continue straight ahead (south-southeast) on a path.

(3) At the intersection, take the path on the right. Ignore a path on the right and begin the descent. At a fork, take the path on the right to descend towards the road. Be careful, this section is steep.

(4) At the bottom, follow the D388 to the left towards Athez.

(5) In Athez, turn left. When the road starts to climb on the left, turn right onto the grass. There is a picnic table here.

(6) At the start of the trails, take the one on the left that goes uphill. At the next junction, turn left. Keep heading north-east and ignore all the side roads. Go around the garden of a house on the right via the stream bed or its banks.

(7) Join a road and follow it to the right. At the intersection, turn left onto Rue de la Fontaine Sainte-Claire. Pass the chapel (picnic table) and take the next paved road on your left.

(8) Turn right and immediately take the unpaved forest road. Ignore the paths on your left and continue with a hairpin turn to the right. Continue along the main road for a long time until you reach Sanceray.

(9) At the houses, follow the road to the left. At the fork, turn right. Continue along this path towards the north.

(10) At the intersection, continue straight ahead on the road. At the T-junction, turn left.

(11) At the crossroads, continue straight ahead on the road. Ignore the turn-offs on the right. At an intersection with a grocery store, turn left to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

There is a restaurant, a grocery store and public toilets at the starting point.

The route consists of approximately 65% unpaved forest/farm roads, 25% paved roads with very little traffic (I only encountered two cars in total) and 10% trails.

There are a few technical sections: a steep 10-metre descent, sections with large rocks, streams with 5 cm of water and a few muddy areas. The first half of the hike takes longer than the second.

The wind and shade are changeable. Remember to bring a windbreaker, hat, etc. Remember to bring water whatever the weather and sun protection if necessary.

Worth a visit

There are restaurants, a cinema and cultural buildings in the village of Anost. Note the presence of two sites belonging to the Morvan Ecomuseum: the Maison des Galvachers, which traces the history of migrant carters and farmers, and the Maison du Patrimoine Oral de Bourgogne (Burgundy Oral Heritage Centre).

For picnics, there is a public table at the exit of Athez and another next to the Velée chapel.

A plaque at the Velée chapel and the Sainte-Claire chapel itself add a cultural break to the journey.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

Very pleasant route. Stunning Morvan landscapes.
Some sections are paved, but the roads in the parish are very quiet. Perfect for unwinding and enjoying the beautiful Morvan countryside

A very accessible and varied route. We had a great time. It's a shame that the hurdy-gurdy festival in preparation prevented us from visiting the galvacher's house and linking our route to its theme...

A very pleasant walk, from hamlet to hamlet. Detailed explanations. Small error in the stated elevation gain: it is a little over 300 metres.

A lovely walk in the Morvan countryside on a beautiful spring day, surrounded by purple foxgloves and flowering broom. A pleasant route despite a few stretches on small tarmac roads (without encountering any cars). No difficulties.

Hello, interesting hike but some difficulty understanding which trail to follow. This was my own fault, and perhaps also because the trail is very well known and therefore easy to describe. No worries, I can usually find the trail with the Visorando GPS.

A route without any particular difficulties, marked from the start at the Maison des Galvachers in Anost. There are a few sections on tarmac, but the roads are not very busy. A pleasant half-day walk.

A very beautiful parish-specific hike, very typical of the Morvan region. As we wanted to make it a little longer, we added a short climb at the start in Joux, to make a small circular hike and return to point 521.
Total hike: 13.65 km, completed in 3 hours 35 minutes.
We loved the little chapel in Velée, where we had a picnic (despite the cool weather!).

Hello,
Thank you for this beautiful hiking route!
We are good walkers, but not very used to hiking "on our own" and are beginners with the Visorando app and website: at least we didn't get lost! The GPS track is perfect for this (as is the map). At each junction, we checked that we were on the right track to be sure, as the signposting is useful but can be misleading in some places due to the many hiking trails that cross each other.
Otherwise, there were no difficulties , with the heatwave, the path was very dry and there were no streams to cross
We enjoyed the nice views, the small hamlets we passed through, and the natural aspect of the hike, despite a few sections on the road (but we had read the description and comments, so we were "psychologically prepared"). Only the first section on the road wasn't great, and it was very hot too. That said, we only passed five cars and it didn't last that long on a four-hour hike.

Hello,
A beautiful, easy hike.
The route follows the Galvachers trail.
The hamlets of Morvan are well maintained, offering a glimpse of rural France.
A relaxing hike with beautiful views.
The Sainte Claire de Velée Chapel is magnificent both inside and out, and the Stations of the Cross are splendid.
Don't forget to take a stroll around Anost and visit its church.

Thank you for this hike.
