The Ciamburanesi fountains

From Ajaccio, take the T21 then the T20 towards the Col de Vizzavona. Get off at Bocognano. The route starts from the U Palazzu Ecomuseum, situated at the northern end of the village. Free parking is available at the Muraschi car park, just after the bridge. It is also possible to reach the village by train, alighting at Bocognano station.

(S/E) From the Palazzu (large house), cross the bridge and follow the main road to the cemetery, ignoring in turn a turn-off to the right, then another to the left and a final one to the right. Look out for the steps leading up to the cemetery.

(1) Take these steps on the right-hand side of the road, which lead up to the old cemetery (where the former bandit Bellacoscia is buried) and the Church of Santa Lucia (dating from the 17th century). Keep to the right of the church and, at the back of the church, take the small path straight ahead that climbs towards the hamlet of I Ceddi.

(2) Walk through the hamlet of I Ceddi, the first village in Bocognano, whose origins date back to the 13th century. Look out for the ancient irrigation channels on the ground and admire the inscriptions on the lintels. Return to the road and follow the path to the right of the oven, which leads on to the Vizzavona Pass. Continue to the railway viaduct. Pass under the arch of the viaduct and head to the Ciamburanesi Fountains.

(3) This is where the water that once supplied the village originated. Make the most of the cool, peaceful atmosphere to rest, remembering to close the gate behind you as you leave. Head back down the same path to the road; once there, turn right until you reach the junction, where you should turn right again. Continue to the bridge.

(4) After crossing the bridge, the wash house and the fountain are on your left. The return journey is along the road back down.

(5) Just before the church, the Perasanta oven is on the right at the first lane. Each hamlet had its own oven and each family had its own baking day. Continue downhill to the starting point, following the route in reverse to the one taken on the way there (S/E).

There are two fountains along the route where you can cool off or stop for a meal or a rest.
There are places to have lunch (restaurants, bakeries, grocery shops) or grab a drink (bar).

A visit to the U Palazzu Ecomuseum is possible on certain days.
