From Ajaccio, take the T21 then the T20 towards the Col de Vizzavona. Get off at Bocognano. The walk starts from the U Palazzu Ecomuseum, situated at the northern end of the village. You can park for free at the Muraschi car park, just after the bridge. It is also possible to reach the village by train, alighting at Bocognano station.
(S/E) From the Palazzu (the ‘big house’), cross the bridge and take the tarmac road that climbs to the right between the car park and an old stone building. Continue straight on until you reach the chestnut grove. Then carry on to the viaduct.
(1) Pass under the viaduct, which dates from the late 19th century and was inaugurated by the President of the Republic, Sadi Carnot, in 1890. Carry on straight ahead and follow the path that branches off to the left to reach the hamlet and the Pughjola fountain.
(2) This is where Napoleon’s great-grandmother came from. Have a drink from the fountain on the right. Continue along the main road, then follow the small village path on the right which passes between two houses and turns left. Walk under the chestnut trees to the Quarciteddu Fountain.
(3) Continue along the road leading down towards the hamlet of Quarciolu. After thefirst house, a small path branches off to the right. You’ll need to open (and close) three small gates, with the owners’ kind permission, as they’re protecting their gardens from animals. Carry on until you reach the railway line.
(4) Cross the tracks and follow the path under the chestnut trees, which leads back to the starting point, taking a narrow lane on the right at the end. (S/E)
