Description of the walk

Start from the Chapelle Saint-Louis, located behind the station, on the other side of the tracks, and accessible via Avenue des Douits. Parking is available at the station car park or at the cinema located opposite the station, on the other side of Avenue de la République.
Please note that this hike is not signposted as such, nor is it signposted in its entirety.

(S/E) Go up Allée Saint-Louis to Avenue des Douits and turn left. Cross Rue du Hougard and, at the next intersection, turn right onto Rue du Cap, against the traffic, opposite the cinema. At the post office (a beautiful building), turn left onto Rue de la Poste to reach the port. Turn right onto Rue Thierry d'Argenlieu, towards "La corniche / Le phare". Continue along this road uphill, ignoring three streets and then two paths on the left.

(1) At the "Rue Dennemont" sign on the left, turn right onto Rue de la Roche Biard (street sign on the right) and drive back to a signpost. At this crossroads, note a house with a beautiful roof ridge typical of the region. Just after a house with white balconies on the right and slightly higher up, turn right at a transformer, take a staircase and then a path that branches off to the left to reach the orientation table. Return to the starting point.

(1) Turn right onto Rue Dennemont. At the next intersection, follow Route de la Corniche to the right. Our route now follows theGR®®223, but the red and white markings are not always very visible. Further on, at the wooden signs, leave the road and take a path on the left, following the signs for "Sentier des douaniers". Further on, go through a gate to enter a pasture area and continue along the cliff side.

(2) At Pointe de Carteret, ignore a path that climbs to the right (towards the lighthouse) and continue along the edge of the cliff, following the red and white markings (GR®®). Go around the point, then go through another gate to leave the grazing area. Shortly afterwards, turn onto a path on the right (GR®® signposting) to climb up to the ruined church. Go around it on the right and continue to follow theGR®® signposting to reach a small road at the wooden signs.

(3) Follow the road to the right. Further on, at an information sign about the Hattainville dunes, take a path on the left.

(4) Ignore a path on the right and then, just after, leave theGR®® trail, which branches off to the right, and take a path on the left. At the T-junction, continue left and then, just after, at a "Site Naturel Protégé" (protected natural site) sign and a barrier, follow the path on the right. The path quickly fades away and disappears. Descend in the same direction, west, on a wide ridge to the bottom of the valley. During the descent, note the outline of four hedges of tall conifers on your right, which will soon serve as landmarks.

(5) At the bottom of the valley, follow a path on the right, ignoring other paths that branch off to the sides. Then, as the path becomes unclear, climb up to the right towards the first hedge of conifers and cut across it perpendicularly. Pass under the trees and continue towards the next hedge. On the other side, turn left and pass under the third hedge. Just before the fourth hedge, turn left between the trees and a bramble bush, then, about 50 metres further on, turn right towards a wooden sign that you can see above. Continue in the direction of another post to reach the path marked by the GR®®.

(6) Follow it to the left, ignoring all the paths that branch off to the sides, and continue, following the red and white GR®® markings on the posts. Further on, go through a gate, then a second one, and you will soon come to a crossroads.

(7) See Practical Information for an update in 2025. Leave theGR®® and turn left. Shortly afterwards, you will see a sign for "Site Naturel Protégé" (protected natural site) and pass through a gate. The path is, once again, very poorly marked. From an iron cistern on the left, continue towards the wooden posts that mark the path. However, ignore the directions indicated by these posts as they mark a circuit that is in the opposite direction to our route. As for the directions to take, follow a left turn shortly after the cistern, then a right turn going uphill. At the next post, turn left. At the next post, turn right then follow a north-west direction to descend towards a well-marked path at the bottom of the dune. Further down, turn slightly right towards a post then you will come to the path.

(8) Follow it to the right and continue north to reach a small road at a gate and a sign saying "Site Naturel Protégé" (protected natural site). Follow the road to the right until you reach an information sign about the dune wildlife and a gate.

(9) Leave the road and take the path on the right. At the wash house, continue to the right and look for wooden posts marking the path (but in the opposite direction to us). At the first post, turn left and climb up a few steps to reach the orientation table.

(10) Leave the site by turning right towards a post with blue markings. At the "Site Naturel Protégé" sign, turn left and continue straight ahead until the next intersection, at the "Ici commence..." sign.

(11) Turn right onto theGR®® for a short round trip to a wash house, then return to

(11) Continue straight ahead on the small road, following theGR®® signs until you reach a T-junction with a green lamppost in front of you.

(12) Leave theGR®® and turn right, then follow this road for about 730 metres.

(13) As the road curves to the left, leave it and continue straight ahead on a path marked in yellow. Shortly afterwards, you will see a sign for "Site Naturel Protégé" (protected natural site) and a barrier. Just after this, take the steps on the left. Further up, do not go through the barrier and continue along this path, on the heights of the Ruisseau des Douits valley, marked by posts and running alongside a meadow. Further on, the path descends and joins a road.

(14) Follow it to the right to return to Carteret, and shortly afterwards you will see a sign for "Mer de sable". Ignore the path on the right and continue along the edge of the road, alongside the Ruisseau des Douits, until you find Allée Saint-Louis on the left. Take this road to return to the chapel (S/E).

Notes

Be careful! It is not easy to find your way in the dunes.

It is advisable to take a compass or GPS with you on this hike: in the dunes, the paths are difficult to see and there are too many of them, and it is easy to get lost if you are not used to finding your way around, as there are few landmarks. I advise those who are afraid of getting lost to follow the alternative route instead: at (4), continue on theGR®® until (6). For the second part in the dunes, there are more landmarks as the route is marked by posts, but you still need to be careful.

The route of this hike on the map does not always follow the paths listed by the IGN because, on the ground, these paths and trails are no longer very visible, and it is preferable to use the landmarks mentioned in the description and the route.

Update 2025 following the notice of 31/05/2025: Small change required at point (7): do not leave the GR®, follow it to the left (the GR® route has probably been changed since this circuit was created). If you follow the GR® from (7), you will end up near point (9) without crossing the tarmac road and following the route of this circuit approximately. When the GR® descends towards this road, leave it and climb to the right towards the orientation table (10).

(S/E) La Chapelle Saint-Louis. After the law separating church and state in 1905 and the construction of the new parish church in 1906, this building became a simple chapel. Since 1969, Protestant services have been held there every Sunday in July and August.

The Hatainville Dunes. Between the Carteret and Rozel headlands, the mighty Hatainville dune massif rises to over 80 metres, covering ancient cliffs that are more than 70,000 years old. From the sea to the top of the massif, the vegetation is layered and forms a mosaic influenced by the tides, sea spray, winds and freshwater inflows. Many rare species adorn the dunes with colours that vary with the seasons: from the blue of sea rye to the yellow and brown of spider orchids, the mauve of wild thyme and the bright pink of pyramid orchids.

A hike with some difficulties. Equipment is recommended (boots, walking sticks)
Fallen trees are still present.
The route through the dunes must be taken with care to protect the vegetation.
The views vary greatly depending on the weather.
A hike where tarmac does not dominate, with typical regional houses.
Be careful in strong winds, as there are a few tricky spots.

Stunning scenery. A bit tricky to find your way around the dunes if you don't have a good sense of direction 😉 but with GPS, no problem at all

Very beautiful hike. The foggy weather prevented us from fully enjoying the view of the sea and the islands.
A complete change of scenery thanks to the varied landscapes.
It's essential to follow the GPS, as it's easy to get lost.
The detour to the wash house is not worth it

A very pleasant walk along the coast and through the grassy dunes.
Apart from the start, which is easy to access and very busy, most of the route is almost deserted. As usual, once you've walked for more than half an hour, you're on your own.
I followed the GPS route for the walk, but there are paths in all directions and you can wander around as you please.

We started from the car park at Carteret cemetery as it was impossible to park any closer. The customs officers' path at the start of the route offers magnificent views of the coast. We enjoyed the wild route through the dunes. We preferred to stay on the GR between points 4 and 6. At point 7, we didn't see any cisterns. Points 11 and 12 need to be changed in the explanations and on the map because the GR route has been completely altered. It no longer passes through these two points but is now much further north! With the sunshine, this hike was very enjoyable

Superb route! Difficult to follow between points 5 and 6. We used a map and compass to find our way, as the description is not sufficient at this point. A small change is needed at point 7: do not leave the GR, follow it to the left (the GR route has probably been changed since this circuit was created). If you follow the GR from 7, you end up near point 9 without passing the tarmac road and following the route of this circuit approximately. When the GR descends towards this road, leave it and climb to the right towards the orientation table (point 10).

Please note: the section in the sand is tiring, even on the way back between points 13 and 14!

A very beautiful hike, a path along the cliff edge and the chance to discover the superb Hatainville beach (on a day with a high tide) and the magnificent dunes.
It's easy to get lost (but it's all relative, there's no real danger...) and a GPS is essential if you want to follow the exact route.

Very beautiful hike. Interesting route, we did the whole thing with the variations. In the dune section, where you have to find your way using the four rows of conifers, it was a bit tricky to stay on track, especially as some fallen trees were blocking the path, but with GPS it wasn't a problem. We had a picnic at the top of a dune with a superb view of the dunes and the sea. This section was less frequented and, for me, the most beautiful!
The hike was busier in the more accessible parts.

A very beautiful hike, I highly recommend it. There aren't many people around; we only came across a few "Visio Randonneurs" (hikers using the Visio app). You definitely need the app's GPS for this hike, but it's fine. There was just one tree that had fallen across the path, but it was easy to get around.

Hello,
We didn't go down into the dunes (points 4-5-6 in the description) for fear of getting lost. We connected points 4 and 6. Without being entirely sure, at point 7 (?), we left the GR to follow a route marked with yellow walker pictograms on a blue background and, more often, with wooden posts. This route must be part of the Visorando description
n° 7-8-9-10-11 (?). Extraordinary views of the sea and the dunes! Following these wooden posts, we did not go as far as the village of Hattainville and therefore did not walk on the D 201 but on a sandy path with wooden posts which, it seems, took us to points 13 and then 14 of the Visorando description.
