The dolmens of the Bois de l’Ange Gardien

A short walk through the Bois du Mont to discover the wild charms of our Comtois karst forests and their sharp limestone pavements, which some might mistake for dolmens. Along the way, you’ll find beautiful wash-house fountains, a viewpoint over the Saône plain, an arboretum and the Saint-Maximin Chapel, where medieval pilgrims led a joyful life.

Description of the walk

Park next to the beautiful fountain, at the junction of the D102 and D112E. Markings: yellow, yellow-blue, white-red, and a significant section without markings.

(S/E) Set off along the D102 towards Trépot, staying on the grassy verge. Immediately leave the small tarmac road branching off to the left, continuing for about 500 m along this quiet country road.

(1) Before reaching a small gravel area on the left, look out for the sign and the path that climbs the embankment for a return trip to the first dolmen.

(2) Return to the road and continue leftwards to the fountain and wash house. Turn back to the gravel area and head right onto the stony path. It runs alongside the pasture and soon climbs into the woods. Immediately after a fork, continue straight ahead (right-hand path).

(3) Twenty metres further on, at the next fork, go up to the left this time, following the yellow markings.

(4) You will come across aGR® path (marked in white-red and yellow-blue) running perpendicular to you; take this to the right.

(5) As you enter a pine forest, look out for the path leading left towards the Gratteris viewpoint. From the viewpoint, take the path on the left to rejoin the GR®. Head left for 150 m, following the wooden boardwalks of the cyclo-cross course. A signpost directs you to turn right, but do not take the first path you come to; continue for about 50 metres, then turn right onto the path marked by signs, heading towards Trépot.

(6) At the main road, head down to the right and, as you come out of the bend, ignore the signposting and turn right onto the partly gravelled forest track, despite the Yellow Cross and Blue Cross. Soon, as you enter a fir forest, you’ll come to a fork; take the right-hand path.

(7) As you emerge from the fir forest, when you pass some sharp limestone pavements on your right, turn 90° left onto a narrow track. Caution! After crossing a few metres of moss-covered sharp limestone pavements, the path runs alongside a deep chasm. There is no danger if you are careful, but do not let your children or your dog run ahead! You will reach a well-defined forest track which you take to the right, leaving the forest paths on both sides to reach a fork you passed on the way there.

(3) Head back up to the right along the path you took on the way there to rejoin the GR®.

(4) But this time, turn left to reach a small tarmac road.

(8) Head down to the left. At the start of the quarry, turn right onto the path that leads you to another dolmen.

(9) Return to the previous fork.

(8) Continue straight on along the tarmac road until you reach the arboretum, beautifully situated in the hollow of a lovely rocky sinkhole. Then continue uphill to the right and, at the nearby fork, head down to the left towards the Chapel of Saint-Maximin.

(10) Take the pretty sunken path on the left and cross the pasture to reach the fountain. (S/E)

A lovely little walk amidst the snow-covered trees.
The wash house at the start is the perfect spot for a post-walk break, with sheltered benches where you can enjoy a Comtoise galette and some mulled wine!

The directions for finding the chasm aren’t very clear, though all you need to do is take the narrow track to the left and follow the marked route; the chasm is clearly visible along the way. Narrow track = a straight, unpaved path. An easy and very interesting walk. It is rare to find, within such a short distance, two dolmens, a viewpoint, a chasm, sharp limestone pavement, sinkholes, a chapel with a 280-year-old oak tree (not mentioned in the description), an arboretum and two wash houses/fountains. A very pleasant hike.

A lovely, easy walk. The route is very detailed and clear. There are plenty of points of interest: sharp limestone pavement, pretty wash-house fountains, a stunning view from the lookout point, an arboretum and a chapel. The ‘gouffre’ is clearly signposted in the forest; there are no specific dangers provided you take the usual precautions, as with any walk in the countryside.
